IU BOT

i will tell you IU isn't regarded anywhere close to what it was when i was looking at schools. the perception over the last thirty years for everything save music and kelley has really slipped in my experience. kids here only go for kelley. otherwise iu is viewed along the lines of sec schools with better weather
Not quite true.

Informatics, O'Neill, EDU and Media School all doing well.

IU leads ND and PU for top 10 and top 20 grad school program rankings.

i'm talkingng about perception. the law school is ranked lower than ever. the only people from here going to iu are for kelley. back in the 90s it was a destination school.

iu ranked 73
purdue 46
nd 18

Hiring managers don't seem to have noticed this.

It still is, just not for basketball coaches.

i have so many friends that went to iu for undergrad. now i don't hear it. only kelley. kelley seems to be incredibly strong. but in my world of schools i'm hearing it's the south and sec schools that are hot. zero data to support. purely anecdotal

The SEC schools are definitely hot, but I’m not seeing the academic case for it. There are a lot of kids who want better weather and football Saturdays. I can’t argue that IU has fallen in the rankings, but I also don’t see Tennessee and Alabama as the new Ivy League.

Encourage you look at the Freshman class profiles for IU.

They have been strong and getting stronger.

Someone with a larger bag of money always comes along.
He was a graduate of the school and had donated a fairly large sum before that for the graduate center. I've never heard of a school taking a large private donation and then putting a time limit on the naming. That type of donation is about legacy, not advertising like in a stadium name deal. Chairman and CEO of Alcoa, Chairman of RAND, Treasury Secretary, I'm sure it's permanent.

This is all about Kinsey and IU being "woke".
He already appoints a majority of the board, right?

I actually think alumni voting is a joke - no one knows who is running, really. They're not vetted by anyone and of course they puff up their resumes. And not many vote anyway.

I'd be all for a revamped election process, where debates are held and background checks are made. But that won't happen.

So, I really don't care one way or the other, but the election/appointment of board members should be the same across all state schools.

I assume it's in perpetuity. I'm unaware of anything like that for private contributions to a school.
Until they uncover the fact 100 years from now that the named wasn't woke and talked mean to a trans one time.

Then their name will be banned forever and more money can be made by selling naming rights again.

I’m pretty sure it’s harder now to get into IU than it was when I entered school in 92’.
Undergraduate rankings are useless. Graduate school rankings are more relevant, but each ranking has their own criteria that rarely includes a study of how rigorous the program is. Usually just how hard it is to get in.

I understand, just saying the caliber of students is more competitive now than before. Not sure how much the acceptance rate has changed.

Tons more out of state and international students now compared to when I applied. Acceptance rate of in state kids is down as a result is my assumption.

There’s a lot of kids from the east coast still coming here. Now MIchigan may have been their first choice and IU second….

That could be accurate, but high school grade inflation paired with SAT score inflation makes it tough to tell. My high school kid has a weighted GPA closer to 5.0 than 4.0. Which seems kinda dumb to me.

It is a bit harder to make an apples to apples comparison with the weighted gpa's. I think it does give incentive to those that attempt to take honors or AP classes. Those classes are harder and should be. Doesn't mean the kid is smarter as smart kids can lack the initiative and take non honors classes too. I'm not sure how I feel about schools becoming test optional. It certainly looks at ability but is it really a predictor of future success? I'm a bit lazy to reread a chapter from Malcom Gladwell that I recall he addresses this subject. Not from the standpoint if schools should be test optional but rather are standardized tests predictors of success.

Yes, AP amd IB classes are more challenging and there is a difference between schools...some significant. A 3.0 at Zionsville is a different thing than a 3.0 at Warren, Ben davis or Lawrence

One thing to look at regarding comparisons is class ranking. ACT and SAT are helpful as well. All this is available when you look at freshman class profiles which I encourage those interested or concerned to do.
