IU basketball

Excellent!
Forgot to add.

Dan Hurley: “recovering” alcoholic.

It might be worth asking at this point if having a few too many is actually a positive indicator when picking our next coach.

I am sure that there aren’t still people who believe in holding ourselves to some kind of moral standard when the last two coaches we had who where actually worth a damn choked their players and/ or committed recruiting violations.

Kevin Wilson was fired because of the drinking. And because his teams didn’t win enough to justify overlooking the drinking.

No Kevin Wilson was fired for trying to get players to play hurt. Drinking might have been secondary but the back breaker was the threat of lawsuits.

The Big 12 has a long storied history of lush coaches. Bob Huggins, Eddie Sutton, why do you think Bill Self had a heart attack at 59?
****in' Huggy Bear.

Driving around 200 miles in the wrong direction from where he thought he was, knee deep in aluminum, on 2 rims as he's looking for another liquor store, just hours after giving a speech at a summer hoops camp.

Heard an interview once where he claimed there were days he feared for his safety at Cincinnati practices because of the players he recruited.

There will never be another like him. A complete wild-card but at the same time massive sweetheart and a hell of a basketball coach.

His guards do foul players all the way up the court. He’s a trailblazer of the “you can’t call them all” philosophy.

Which I loathe.

Knight liked him. That was always a head scratcher to me when I was younger. It makes sense to me now that I'm older

I think the money people would like to see Beard if his off court "issues" can be reconciled. If they can't get over that hump <eg> then they'll go for a Cig type hire with McCollum.
They had zeroed in on someone but I don’t think it worked out. I could be wrong obviously. Brownell, McDermott, McCollum most likely the next coach comes from that lot. Personally, McCollum is my preference…and not just from that group.

I think we should hire Gregg Marshall. Lots of fire and passion inside this man. He once almost killed a referee over a call he didn't like during a practice game.

I think you're correct.

If I had to guess, they looked at Beard and something is keeping them away. Whether that's the police report or something not public knowledge, I don't think they're comfortable with him.

I want McCollum too and thought after a quarter of a century on the coaching carousel the basketball gods finally smiled on us and timing was actually on our side, but with Iowa now in the mix I would be shocked if he ends up anywhere but Iowa City.
Unless the deal is already done.

I hear ya and I reckon this is the bad part of being an old IU basketball fan these days, even when we are at our most cynical and apathetic, we still have these glimmers of hope invade our consciousness.
I gave up on the free board after the year after year hype machine on recruits only to watch one shitty team after another

That's just the windmill shill who runs it... That guy must have shot an Albatross last time he cruised the North Pacific because he's become the board embodiment of a Bad Luck talisman: if he hypes a guy their career is inevitably cooked...

There's still a few that are worth reading there...

I though he was a Solar Shylock?

So the more I’ve thought about it, here’s where I stand:
1. Beard: He has had real success and brought two different programs up in level. He is the only candidate mentioned where I feel the odds are good that IU will be back on the national map. On his past, it’s 2025 and CBB is a professional sport. Being self righteous about purity will only hold us back and guarantee we remain mediocre. The last of those dusty banners says 1987.

2. McCollum: unlike Beard, this could be a total failure. Archie 2.0 possibility. That is my concern, but he’s young, can coach, and at least provides hope. It’s high risk high reward.

3. No one else. Brownell or McDermott or Brey are incredibly uninspiring hires. It’s going to a great restaurant and ordering white bread toast. I’ve been a casual fan for over a decade now because IU quit caring about basketball and I decided to do the same. Hire one of these type of guys and that won’t change for me.

I'm convinced...

Sign McCollum Now...! 🍺🏀🍺

Brownell would be a bad hire and I’d prefer taking a flyer on McCollum if those were my two options to choose from. However, for the 5th time, McDermott is a damn good coach and would be a good hire.

He’s turned f#cking Creighton into a top 25 school. I don’t even know where Creighton is located. Is it in Canada? Greenland? Have you see the bums they get? Half their team looks like Billy Hoyle.
I've actually been on the Creighton campus in Omaha, and it's depressing. Like a cement jungle. Nothing interesting around it.

I respect anyone who can win there - I see no natural advantages it has.

Omaha itself is a dreary place, imo.

The playing hurt was just an excuse. Being the town lush and running around on his wife did him in.

Bloomington is a small town.

I still owe my parents $150 for sending me. But in my defense, I did tell them I'd pay them back when I made the NBA, so technically I think I'm in the clear.
And that right there is the difference between us and the urbanites. Where we're from, if you wanted to do something like this, you found a way to do it. Our parents weren't pushing us to do anything. If you were like me, I'd take any shitty job available to have money of my own to spend.

When the national Latin Club (mostly Midwest, I think) was sponsoring a trip to Italy when I was in HS, I hounded my parents so much that my mom agreed to get a loan to pay for it (dad wouldn't sign it lol Looking back, I don't blame him). I paid them back with my paper route and detassling money. $700 included the flight and 10 days in Naples and Rome and included meals - a lot of money back then! Life changing for me.

I don’t think so. I know a group of parents who had attorneys. A couple of them went public.

Sure, some guys with little playing time, like the guys who suddenly realized they were diddled by Dr. Bomba 30+ years afterwards. They were inconsequential players, too.

Whether the drinking or players playing hurt, none of it matters if Wilson was bringing home 8+ wins a year.

It’s all just window dressing.

Nope one of them was a starter. I had him in third grade and was so excited he went to IU.

Most people drink alcohol. Beard sounds like an angry drunk. Those types are one bad night away from being all over the news and that’s the difference.

I spent a lot of time around Don Nelson during one period several years ago. Nelly was rarely without a beer in hand, even during practice. He’d pop a beer as soon as he got to the locker room after games. Be drinking a beer at the post game press conference. Had beer for breakfast. But he was such a happy teddy bear of a person. Beer was like water to him. But he never drove a vehicle while drinking and I couldn’t imagine him raising a hand to anyone in anger, and definitely not to a female under any circumstances. He was also a hard ass as a coach.

Some people just shouldn’t drink, while others can handle things just fine.

Agreed. We used to go every May & it’s just not an inspiring place.

I remember him as a highly rated recruit that didn't produce on the field. I don't remember him starting, but if you say so......

It doesn't sound to me like he was being forced to play.

"It is fact that I have accepted a medical at IU, because their medical staff did not clear me to participate any longer. My career is not over, I have elected to transfer and play elsewhere, because every other doctor I have seen has cleared me to continue my career.

I have also decided that it would be best for me to stay at IU, graduate from IU in the spring of 2017, then transfer so I will be eligible to play right away. I will have two concrete years to play and a third if granted by the NCAA. I believe this plan is not only best for my education but for my options and eligibility in the college football world.

I the meantime I will be training with IU's strength and conditioning staff and will help coach the receivers with Coach Johns to stay around football and broaden my football knowledge."

EDIT: Looks like he did start 6 games

Yes he was starting at the beginning and then had something like 6 concussions. There’s an ESPN article I tried to link but couldn’t that had the first guy who came forward Nick someone. It had more specifics and quoted both his dad and Dominique’s dad, Mark, who was my assistant principal and also still a friend. Dom is a trainer at a gym, a youth pastor, and has 6 little ones now. A good guy. Redshirted in third grade… lol at parent request.

Every football player has to decide for themselves if reoccurring concussions are worth the benefits they get from playing.

Shame on you for trying to pin that on Wilson.
