IU basketball

jour·ney·man
/ˈjərnēmən/

noun
noun: journeyman; plural noun: journeymen
  1. 1.
a worker or sports player who is reliable but not outstanding.
    "a solid journeyman professional"

  2. 2.
    historical
a trained worker who is employed by someone else.
    "a journeyman carpenter"

Damn it, I got my definitions mixed up.

Still, I'm not gonna be upset with someone that has a 60% winning percent at a school that doesn't have nearly the resources that we have and went to and Elite 8 last year and could very well go back again next year.

Like I said, he's no where near my first choice, but I wouldn't be upset if he were the choice. We could certainly do much worse.

So, for those that don't know, the chatter out there is a certain Ole Miss ball coach is possibly being looked at by IU.

I haven't heard anything personally but on the newest HH podcast, they've heard we're talking or going to meet with him.

Pretty wild stuff. I have no idea what to think know.

I thought that he was the top choice

Not buying it. I'm setting my sights on a completely underwhelming hire so I don't get my hopes up.

Lane Kiffen? About damn time, was I was advocating for him back when we hired Tom Allen.

The pendulum must have swung back then. A couple weeks ago it was all about Pam putting her foot down. This was shortly after she got her new contract and vote of confidence from the BoT, so it made sense that she was in a position to do so.

Personally I'd prefer they not hire Beard. Not that I think it would necessarily bite us in the ass, but that the ensuing drama from those opposed to him isn't something this program needs. We need someone new and fresh and exciting to unify the program and the fan base and the state itself.

I think that guy is Ben McCollum.

He might become a great coach at IU, but the notion that the name Ben McCollum would inspire excitement and unification of the IU fanbase and entire state of Indiana is a streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttttttttttccccccccccccchhhhhhhh.

This could always be someone from Beard's side pumping this info out for leverage for other jobs. People have been saying he wants out of Oxford, so being linked to IU can only help him.

What's for certain is nobody knows a damn thing right now. I'm dismissing everything I've been told and just gonna wait to see who it is.

Could be Beard. Could be Drew. Could be Brownwell. Hell, it could be Billy Donovan for all I know. Nobody knows anything.

True. Let’s see what he does in arch madness tho. A gauntlet of dirty schools and rough fans between last place and a tourney championship

Only among the nutters who think Stevens or Pearl or Donovan or Wright would come, and/or who have Beard tabbed as our home run savior hire.

Those guys were Dusty May and Brad Stevens.

I don't think there's a hire out there that people won't find something wrong with in some way or fashion.

Your second paragraph is everything. You, I, and everyone else needs to reread that every day like a mantra.

So 50% of them?

Another 40% don't even know who Ben McCollum is.

How many "fans" knew much of anything about Robert Montgomery Knight (as a basketball coach) before he showed up here... A few probably were aware of him as a player who closely followed Big Ten Basketball but I'm doubtful that many really knew much about him as a Coach...

Now I'm not trying to say McCollum is the next Bob Knight (he, unfortunately for us at this point, was clearly one in a billion) but I'm just pointing out that initial fan recognition isn't really a quality I'd consider when it came to whether or not to hire someone...

If the guy we hire wins, everyone will know his name soon enough..., and for the Right reasons...

If this hire comes down to some kind of fan popularity referendum then Scott has gone about it completely the wrong way, in my opinion...

How many of us really knew much about Curt Cignetti 18 months ago?

As much as it pains me to agree with mcm666, I gotta say, having watched several of Auburn's games this year, how fun would it be to land Pearl? I mean, that guy would blow the roof off Assembly Hall, and would win with an exciting brand of basketball, played by passionate, skilled players. His personality, plus our NIL and resources? Talk about a full on sprint back to relevancy.
Fuhgeddaboudit.

If they hire Ben McCollum, we’re more pathetic than I realized. I might become a soccer fan. @mcmurtry66 you’re going to need to teach me the rules.

It could have happened, as could have several other badass hires, but like it is so often, the timing wan't right before and I can't imagine it being right now.

We need Ben McCollum.

Knock is he's only been a head coach at the d1 level for one year, and it's not at a power-4 school.

Multi year D2 national champion at his previous stop.

Sound familiar to anyone we've hired recently? The one difference, McCullum is only 43.

He's 28-3 in D1 with D2 players he brought with him. He's a winner. He even finds a way to win when they play like shit, like they just did against Belmont. They're playing for the MVC touney championship at 2:00 on CBS, which gets him a bid. No telling what kind of noise they could make on the big stage.

After Kentucky and Michigan’s coaching search last year did NOT include Beard, I’m going to assume IU passes on him, and for good reason. Cignetti has shown us how winning at the lower levels can bear serious fruit when stepped up, and so i think McCullum will be the guy. and for those who question whether he can recruit, I believe IU will also hire a GM for the basketball program to help bridge that gap.
Also, the Hoosier Hysterics are total knuckleheads and a terrible source of info.

I'm with ya. After the Cig hire, I don't care where they've won, just that they've shown that they can win at a high level.

They’re not hiring McCullum. He’s not a candidate for the job.

Pretty definitive there. What makes you say so?

I've heard people claim he's holding out for the Iowa job. But then again Dusty May was holding out for the IU job, so I'm not convinced.

Dolson isn’t an idiot, which is why I like him. They’re not hiring a basketball coach with less than a year of experience from a small DI school.

Ah. I see. Its your opinion that he shouldn’t hire him.
It’s common sense. They also won’t hire any high school coaches, DIII coaches, or DII coaches. McCollum isn’t experienced enough or successful enough to be considered for the IU job.

McCollum was just interviewed a minute ago. Anyone else see it.

Dude is one old looking 43 year old. Gave great answers but gave zero eye contact. Looked through the microphone towards ground.
