Is St Mary's Any Good?

I was listening to Kravitz on with Coyle just a bit ago and he doesn’t think we have much of a prayer tonight. Basically we have no shooters and St Mary’s is just too disciplined and too efficient. We need a near perfect game with no turnovers and good shooting according to him.

Seriously? Kravitz?

We will get beat soundly if the IU players treat this game like a walkover because St. Mary's isn't a P5 team. They are fundamentally sound, play excellent defense, extremely well-coached, and more importantly don't beat themselves.
I could not imagine any possibility that the IU players would treat this game as a walkover….

Looking like the mid major teams are a tad over seeded. I expect a frustrating game but IU should win this.

From what I am seeing is that the WCC and MWC teams have a good size/athleticism in their starting lineups, and probably at least 2 really good players, but aren't very deep. That's enough to hang with and sometimes beat good teams, but they have a hard time overcoming any sort of foul trouble or poor shooting performance against deeper teams.

I don't believe they will either. And while what fans say have zero bearing on the game, I'm sure there a quite a few in the Hoosier contingency who don't take St. Mary's seriously because of their conference affiliation.

Just say it. Who on that vaunted WCC team is better? Is the coach better? Is their conference better? What match up do they have that they can take advantage of? What do the Gaels do that is better? We just saw Michigan thump a “better” CS team that was picked better. I’m just not sold on this.

I'm still pinching myself today. Got my IU jersey on and things seem right again. Its been too damn long!

I've said my piece on this.

This is a game I believe IU can and will win, but this isn't like anything close to playing a creampuff in November. Randy Bennett is an excellent coach and has been for years. I believe they shoot the ball extremely well and are very good at getting teams to play at their pace. IU absolutely has to execute in the half court to win this and we aren't anywhere near a good enough shooting team to automatically assume that is going to happen.

Will absolutely be disappointed in a loss tonight but this is definitely not a game that I believe is Indiana's to lose.

Who said that? Who is the matchup problem? Either way? You aren’t answering the question. We’ve played teams that grind. SM is no different except those teams have just as good of coaching and superior players. I get it they beat Gonzaga once in every 4 year span but who else have they beat? SF? Give us a break here. The metrics for seeding and picking teams is worse than it’s ever been.

Also, I'd argue that Gonzaga is a bit overrated, still very good, but more in the 5-10, and got a lot of undue credit for beating some overrated teams earlier in the year (UCLA, Texas)

I’m telling you the metric they use to pick and seed if F’ed up. To many teams over seeded already. I mean Michigan had a broke lineup. You lose your best guard and they still thumped a “superior”!team.

Agree completely. Sometimes we as fans set ourselves up for incredible disappointment. While I agree they are probably seeded too high, we have absolutely played at or below the level we are seeded. Consistency has been an issue for us as a team and with individual players all year. We can win this but imo it’s an over statement to say we should. If we play like we did in the BT tournament we will likely win. If we play like we did in any number of second halves this season we likely lose.

From here on out we will need to play well to get wins. I am ready to go on a run. No better time for a team to get consistent than right now! Let’s go IU!

I just answered your question. I think IU is going to struggle scoring against one of the better defensive teams in the country. I think TJD poses a problem for them, but they are going to dictate the tempo tonight and force IU to make shots from the perimeter, which has been our achilies heel all year. You can choose to think St. Mary's is overrated and not a team to be taken seriously because they play in the WCC and not the B10, that is certainly your prerogative. I'm here to tell you I won't be shocked in the least if St. Mary's wins tonight (although I hope I'm wrong) and wouldn't consider it an upset at all.

Michigan on paper is one of the most talented teams in the country. Super versatile 7 footer and two 5* freshmen who have 30 games under their belt. Don't construe Michigan underachieving to the max this year as a reason why the seeding selection is screwed up. Michigan was lucky to make the tournament.

And? That’s not exactly what I’m talking about. I’m saying the metric that they use is lying to them. CS was over seeded and it showed.

They were overseeded or they got a shitty draw playing a Michigan team who underachieved the entire year?? There's a reason why Michigan was favored in that game.

I never once said they “weren’t”. But go ahead and talk down to people who just don’t see a clear advantage to a poor man’s Wisconsin. Wisconsin is better too. Colorado state made SM look silly too. You finally did answer the question. Go Hoosiers.

They weren’t favored. It was a bad seed line people saw a mile away. Boise St. is another one.

I'm not talking down to anyone. I just believe that anyone who thinks this is IU's game to lose due to the narrative that St. Mary's is overrated because of their conference affiliation is in for a rude awakening.

Memphis, like Michigan, is another team who underachieved all season. Memphis has multiple NBA prospects and top flight recruits but underachieved 2/3 of the year. Memphis has been playing like a 3 or 4 seed the last 3 weeks and it's finally showing. Unfortunately, the committee takes into consideration the entire year and not the last 2-3 weeks. I have no problem with Boise St seeded 8th, I don't think that's unrealistic. I'd be pissed if I were a team like Gonzaga playing a team like Memphis in the 2nd round knowing they have the talent of a 2 or 3 seed.

I’ve not seen anyone say that specifically. Everyone knows IU is up and down. If the 12/5 11/6 8/9 seeds are so far apart or close it’s a bad metric. It’s not doing anything for the game.

They’ve been playing like that since bates left. It’s still a bad seed line. Bad match up.

Memphis when playing together and up to their talent level is a bad matchup for anyone. They have size/length/athleticism that can match-up to anyone in the country and they have a boatload of top 100 recruits on their roster.

Again, don't confuse Memphis underachieving all year and getting a 9 seed as the reason why the selection process is flawed.

This will not be an easy game by any measure. IU has better talent but are inconsistent with it and we all know that.

Might have to side w Coach here. They’re simply better than us in every facet of the game and more importantly they just don’t beat themselves. Very disciplined team.

Looks like the Big is over rated again. Maybe they are just playing good today and we are tired but this looks like a good team with 3-4 starters better than ours.
