Kenpom says they're better than us offensively which was no surprise, but also said they're better than us defensively...which really surprised me. I've not seen one second of any of their games.

Anybody know a B1G team they might compare them to?

I watched their win vs Zaga...they are good...although Zags played one of their worst games of the year. The tall skinny frosh didn't have a good game and Timme was 0-10 from the field in the first half. I think we compete well with teams like WY, StM...grinder teams who play psuedo-traditional B1G ball. It's the long athletic teams like the MSUs, UM (or Cuse 2013) that scare me. Our perimeter does not match up well against those type of teams.

They beat Gonzaga at home is all you really need to know.
I don’t drink the Gonzaga kool-aid, and it’s one basketball game.

Everyone thinks these shitty conferences are great with multiple bids, in reality they benefit from the ACC being down.

IU should beat them, but if they can’t hit a shot, foul guys on 3’s, the usual dumb play, etc, they will lose by 10. I’ve been hopeful this team can turn the corner mentally, but at this point I don’t see it happening. Gonna have to take the good with the bad.

Also hoping that Stewart and Kopp can shoot 35 whole percent for one friggin game, but it’s not trending that way.

I think we can win but if we go like 2-13 from three I am not so sure. We are going to have to hit shots or a better team like this will probably just triple team TJD. Galloway will also have to play better he was awful last night and fouled out.

We will get beat soundly if the IU players treat this game like a walkover because St. Mary's isn't a P5 team. They are fundamentally sound, play excellent defense, extremely well-coached, and more importantly don't beat themselves.

They are probably what you expect: a team with lots of foreign players, so they are very sound and can shoot. Their leading scorer (which is a bit misleading because they have 4 guys who average 10+ a game) and rebounder however is a 6'10" Estonian who is solid, but not athletic at all (whether white men can jump is debatable, but this guy can't!) so TJD can and should have his way with him if he goes decisively and doesn't hesitate. Easy to see him getting in foul trouble, and Race too should be able to get around him. LIkewise, their 2nd leading scorer is their PG and XJ should have a big advantage on him with quickness. Keep riding the horses that brung us in TJD and XJ, hope Race and Kopp are rid of their jitters and that one or two of RP, JG, TG or PS breakthrough. We need to close out well and cover their shooters. Remember the RP vs PU in that first game? I hope he does!

Yep. Just need to keep up the defensive intensity, hit 70% of our free throws and hit 7-8 3s. That’s our formula. We get to 70 and we win this.

does anyone believe in hypnosis? I swear, I'd try it with Stewart and Kopp and try and get it in their heads that they are great shooters and will make shots. I went to a hypnotist for awhile during my divorce for anxiety and sleep (partly because I bought a series of sessions on a Groupon and partly because she had big hooters, and partly because I thought it helped) and, while I don't know about long term change, I did feel better and sleep better for a couple of days. Phil Jackson tried different methods to reach players, I swear, I'd try it by telling them "you guys are good shooters so I want you to try this and see if we can't get you to relax and let the good shooter you are come out." For that matter, try it with Race and Trey too, if you're going to keep allowing them to shoot 3s.

They did that to X to help him celebrate on the court after wins. Remember when he ran down the court, waving his arms up and down (I can't find a vid). They told him he could fly after a win..
If you remember that celebration, this should be funny.

Tass the Estonian is maybe a better matchup for TJD than Ike from Wyoming was. Seem to be similar caliber defensively, but I think Ike is better offensively.

And they play smaller more traditional guards at the 1 and 2 spots, which should be better matchups for X, Phin, and Galloway.

In general, while an overall better team than Wyoming, St. Mary's is going to be much easier to game plan for, and it will just come down to execution.

We literally average the same points offensively and defensively as st Mary’s. They did it in a mid major and we did it in the B1G. I’ll take our chances straight up winning this game. Not buying the west coast, lenardi and media hype.

It looks like a decent matchup but I don't see them as a 3pt favorite, unless that's a comp for travel similar to home court advantage.

Colorado St has a good record but St. Mary's was their ONLY high level competition.

I'm not a big fan of whining but regarding getting screwed, IU's road record is 3-8 so the committee sent them as far from home as possible. Anything farther would have required a Vax ID.

We did all that playing in the B1G. Not buying the St Mary’s hype machine. Just like Wyoming.

Ike impressed me. I thought TJD played him well both halves and obviously bothered him in the first half, but he settled himself, took his time and started hitting in the 2nd half. Good team and tough to prepare for.

yes, they beat Gonzaga 1 out of the 3 times they played this year, the only ranked team St Mary's played all year but still ended up ranked at year end. Gonzaga needs to get out of that conference.

Also I think that defending post moves under the basket is maybe one of TJD's weaker areas as he seems to overcommit on shot fakes, and that is almost exclusively Ike's offensive game. Tass seems to have a bit more diverse offense skills, but things TJD does a little better disrupting

so just show them pictures of big hooters?

it IS Oregon... are you sure they don't need one?

I looked at season stats and watched a little bit of their two blowout losses to Gonzaga, their win against Gonzaga.

IU has a big frontcourt advantage. Our bigs will be able to guard their bigs 1:1. TJD will have 20 and 10 unless he gets into foul trouble. JG and Race will get theirs. Fatigue and jet lag are real factors, though. Hopefully our guys are getting plenty of rest and eating well today. I think CMW did a nice job of managing minutes in the Wyo game. Kopp, Race, and JG played about 20 min each. Trey 12, Bates 11, RP 8. PStew played almost the whole game and helped turn Maldonado over 10 times. TJD at 36 min is more than I would like, but as CMW says “shit man, he’s 20 years old.”

St. Mary’s starting PG and SG take the majority of their shots and both play almost the entire game. Both appear to be very smooth with quick releases. Good looking 3pt shots. They don’t shoot a huge volume of 3s, but they are certainly capable. If one of those guys gets into foul trouble, though, they are screwed.

Khouse (sp?) is a kid that will piss us off tomorrow. I just have that feeling.

Good thing they don’t run much. They like to limit possessions and score efficiently. If you mess that up they become average. I like this matchup better than the last game or top half of the B1G. We should win this game.

They shoot ok from 3, but don' take a lot of them which is a good as one of IU's primary weaknesses on defense has been closing out on shooters. They also don't allow many 3 attempts, which has 2 sides - GOOD: IU doesn't rely on 3's and can find ways to score without outside shooting, BAD: it might be even harder for our shooters to get going.

I watched that game, reminded me a lot of Iowa's game at Rutgers. Gonzaga just could not get anything going and it felt like St. Mary's had a lot to do with that. They do play good defense. That being said, I don't think this years Gonzaga team is at the level of the Gonzaga teams of the last few years.

Personally, I think IU can win this game and it will be one I watch.

It's not entirely impossible that wouldn't help. I went a few times cause I had a major problem with sleepwalking, like getting dangerous and starting to head for the car. So I tried it, had to say it was for quitting smoking so insurance would cover. I never really felt hypnotized, like under, but it was relaxing and did work. I stopped doing that, whereas before I'd tie a rope around my ankle to the end of the bed to stop me and wake me up

My whole thinking is, unless it would actually hurt, and I don't believe it would, I don't know why you wouldn't try.
