I think some of this overlaps with Jeff's story on Troy Williams as I wrote much of this yesterday. Also Matt's football portion may not come till late morning.

ITLR:

What stands out right now about the current recruiting outlook is how many highly ranked 2017 (seniors-to-be) that Indiana is mentioned with right now.

Here’s a quick rundown of all the four and five star prospects listing the Hoosiers along with a handful that may jump up to that level in the next iteration of the rankings:

Five-stars

Kris Wilkes (Indianapolis)
Mohamed Bamba (NYC)
Hamidou Diallo (NYC)
Michael Porter (Columbia, Mo)
Nick Richards (NJ)
Jeremiah Tilmon (East St. Louis, IL)
Jarred Vanderbilt (Houston)

Four-stars

Paul Scruggs (Indianapolis)
Jaren Jackson (Indianapolis)
Malik Williams (Ft. Wayne)
Matt Coleman (Va)
Jordan Tucker (NJ)
Brandon Randolph (CT)
Xavier Tillman (Mich)
Derek Culver (Oh)
Tremont Waters (NJ)
Jordan Goodwin (Ill.)
Chris Lykes (DC)

Fast risers

Justin Smith (Ill.)
David Beatty (NJ)
Andrew Platek (NY)
Jose Alvarado (NYC)
Luka Garza (DC)

That’s around two-dozen names. Wilkes and Scruggs should remain at the top of our next hot board but should have quite a few making the “high” mutual interest level including Coleman, Bamba, Tucker and one or two of the fast risers.

Michael Porter may be harder to land as Washington coach Lorenzo Romar hired his father to his staff as a full time assistant coach. Porter Sr. has been an assistant on the Missouri women's team the last few years. Romar goes way back with the father (he’s godfather to his children) and already has a verbal from Michael’s younger brother Jontay Porter - a four-star 2018 prospect.

The NBA draft combine in Chicago kicked off yesterday and runs through Sunday. Troy Williams measured 6’5.75 w/o shoes and 6’6.75 with shoes. Weighed 214 pounds with a 6’8.25 wingspan and had 10.0 percent body fat. The latter was unexpectedly a bit high and among the top 10 there but well below several fellow Big Ten players including Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan (12.6 percent).

Williams had a 36-inch max vertical which ranked as the 8th highest overall:

In the combine scrimmage Williams had some unusual shooting stats. He was 2-for-3 on 3-pointers but just 2-for-11 inside the arc, finishing at 4-for-14 from the floor. Added five boards and had just one turnover in just over 20 minutes.

Draft Express thinks today is key for Williams

Interesting measurement/scrimmage notes on Big Ten players:
  • Melo Trimble had the shortest wingspan of players there, one of the few guys you ever see to have a shorter wingspan (6’2) than his height with shoes (6’2.5). Maryland teammates Diamond Stone and Robert Carter were both on the top four in highest body fat percentage. Carter played really well in the scrimmage.
  • Nigel Hayes’ wingspan differential versus height was among the largest in the camp and he posted a 7’3 wingspan. Hayes did not have a good stat line in his scrimmage.
Here is the box from the second scrimmage:

Back to spring recruiting and the storylines that have come about from that important evaluation time.

One of those key storylines is that Mohamed Bamba, the 6-foot-11 center ranked No. 3 in the nation in the 2017 class, remains a player to keep a close eye on.

Bamba plays for the same AAU team as IU center Thomas Bryant, who will be a sophomore this fall, and folks in New York say the improvement of Bryant is something Bamba and those close to him have noticed.

Another storyline is that five-star 2017 forward Kris Wilkes of Indianapolis North Central plans, at least at this point, to make official visits to schools further away and then work his way back toward the Midwest.

At this point, he’s planning for UCLA and Maryland to be his first two official visits. Players are allowed a maximum of five official visits.

Six-foot-11 Fort Wayne forward Malik Williams’ recruitment has kicked up a notch.

Williams initially was going to announce a college decision on Aug. 26, his birthday, but told Peegs.com that he now likely will announce finalists on that date.

Since adjusting his plans, Williams added offers from Louisville, Maryland, Pittsburgh and UCLA.

Indiana made a strong impression on 2017 shooting guard Andrew Platek on his unofficial visit.

Platek is the top 3-point shooter on the Nike EYBL circuit among players with at least three attempts per game. The 6-foot-4 guard is shooting 54.1 percent from the arc.

Our story on his unofficial visit.

James Blackmon Jr. this week sounded like a player planning to return to IU for his junior season.

Blackmon was on radio with his hometown station in Marion and while he didn’t make any formal pronouncements, he talked quite a bit about what role he expected to play for IU next season.

You can read that story here.

Peegs.com will be in Hampton, Va., this weekend for annual loaded Boo Williams event, part of the EYBL circuit now.

Mohamed Bamba, Hamidou Diallo, Michael Porter, Nick Richards, Matt Coleman, Jordan Tucker, Andrew Platek, Brandon Randolph and Jose Alvarado are just a few of the Indiana recruiting targets who will be playing in the event, as well as 2017 IU commit Al Durham.

There will be a good event in Westfield, Ind., this weekend at Jonathan Byrd’s Fieldhouse, organized by Elevate Hoops.

That event is scheduled to include Romeo Langford of the EG10 All-Stars, Kris Wilkes, Paul Scruggs and Keion Brooks (15U) of the Indy Hoosiers, Malik Williams of Team Legit and Kevin Easley of GH3 Rising Stars (16U) as well as others.
