Indiana SemiState

Sitting here at halftime of 2A game: Jimtown v. Manchester.

Sounds like Fishers is the best team in the state. They play in Elkhart tonight. Do they have any Div 1 kids?
Gardner Jr is only a sophomore but I think he is a Division 1 kid. Their athletic bigger guy is a Division 1 football player who is going to Stanford. The Kirby kid who is their sixth man is going to Miami of Ohio. They are just a well run team who plays together. They seem very well coached.
Is the Jimtown Manchester game going well? Both of those are Northern Indiana teams.

I’ll drop my rant here. The IHSAA change with regionals and semi state is the dumbest thing ever. Semi state should mean final 4. Not final 8. All just to give away extra regional “championships”. I hate it.
When did that change occur? I remember there being sectionals, regionals, semi-state, and state forever, but I haven't lived in Indiana for a while.

It's dumb to make the kids play a game, then wait around for 5 or 6 hours, then play a second. Just play two on Friday night and one on Saturday.

Still is. I think they just switched up the number of games at each. Regionals is only one game now, while semistate is 3.

It was sectional, regional, semi-state and state in the 70s. The four semi-states had four teams each with one winner of each going to state.

Proud MHS grad here, good to hear they are going to State😀
13-0 my senior year and you guys ended the streak. It was always a battle that we came up short in.

Matt, Troy, Rich (you dirty MFer) if any of you guys are on here, you can figure out who I am. Let's grab a beer and talk shit. It's been forever. I'll get Kelley to come along and we can make him buy.

BTW, I mean dirty MFer in the best way possible. Always a good time later in the HPER.

I've been through North Manchester. It really is a charming town. I ate a breaded tenderloin at Daves. Congrats to them. I've also had a chance to see this Gavin Bettin. He is a pretty good player who I heard is going to Grace College. I will have to get over there sometime to see a game.

It’s all been dumb since 1998. Do you want a one game regional or a one game semi-state? Another thing the woe, is me crowd has ruined….all because they wanted to hand out more trophies

Fans were great. Talked to a guy who played for them on their team in 68. His nephew was 6'6" best player for Manchester.

I don’t live there currently but get back occasionally. Dave’s is a great, used to be a drive in restaurant. If you like a good tenderloin, go to “the inn”, they are awesome!

Yeah, I guess in my mind I’ve written off single class bball for a long time. It was quite a thing though. Man, winning a sectional was a big f$cking deal. And you couldn’t replicate the energy in the sectional host gym. So many fans from so many teams. Sad it’s all gone.

And why were you attending THAT game? Seems kinda far from home right?

Growing up in Indy the greatest thrill for me wasn’t going to Bloomington for IU games. It was actually going to games at Hinkle Field House during the state tournament. No basketball atmosphere was better. Each school had a section and the arena was packed. The school spirit and opportunity to play in such an iconic building was never taken for granted. And then for some reason the games were taken away from Hinkle. Yes the single class tourney became a multi class tournament, but for me the real loss was taking the games away from these iconic Indiana basketball cathedrals.

I went to Jimtown. Game was in Michigan City, so not too far away, and my dad wanted me to come over.

My dad is insane, though. He’s 80 and still gets so wrapped up in the games that he can barely sit still, he’s yelling (he’s VERY loud) at the officials and gets disgusted by coaching or playing mistakes. Can’t keep his mouth shut. After the game, he was telling everyone who would listen how the coach screwed up letting Manchester set their offense when Jimtown still had two fouls to give before the bonus (5 fouls per quarter? Crazy). School board members, teachers, I’m sure some parents of the players (he probably coached 50-75% of them in baseball at some point—oh the stories I have). He just can’t help himself.

He also routinely turns off games on TV when his team gets down, loudly proclaiming they stink and can’t believe he watches them. As a result, I don’t know if he’s seen a comeback win from IU, ND, or a Chicago team in 25-30 years.

Now you might think from that description that he must be a curmudgeon and someone to avoid in this small town. But outside of sports, he’s a happy guy who volunteers for everything (Lions Club, VFW, etc.) and knows everyone.

I imagine a lot of people who are combative here on the WC are the same way. Great, friendly, forgiving people in most aspects of their life who just can’t help themselves when they get into written, back and forth political arguments.

Seems like your dad might have been one of these guys.

Seriously your dad seems like a fun guy to attend a game with. And honestly I turn off games early all the time. Hard to get anything done when you stay and watch the Titanic go down. With texting I rely on my brother to tell me when a comeback happens. But I’m also very superstitious so I standby not turning the tv back on. I feel if they’re losing when I’m watching but winning when I’m not it’s a sign to stay away. I also get pissed when my brother declares early “we’ve got this one in the bag”. It’s a curse.

Looks like we got ourselves a real Jimmie here boys. Real blue flame special.

He'd be fun if he wasn't my dad.

My dad gets so pissed off watching my nephew. I laugh about it, but my mom is over it.

My brother and I could always hear Dad, no matter how loud the gym was. "Shoot the damn ball", "Block out dammit" and "Call it both ways" are a few of his greatest hits that he's reprised.
Yep, I believe all of those were yelled out to maximum effect yesterday.

I get all of the nostalgia for the good ol' days, Sparty, but the complaining about the current format sounds pretty "woe is me". We should all just stipulate that things will never be as good as those glory days when any person in the world was young.

My buddy who moved to Texas played D1 and his kid was a good player playing at one of the big Houston clubs. A few years back I flew down to visit. He had a game the next morning we were going to and i started to head up into the bleachers and he goes no no we have to watch over there. About ten yards from the corner flag on the opposite end of the stands was a lined box that could fit two people. As a compromise for his behavior he brokered a deal that he could still go to games but that’s where he had to stand. He stands all by himself in that box with the entire bleachers staring across the field at him.

Some aren’t equipped for youth sports.
