Indiana Mascot

Looks like the Bison is coming back, which a few hints were dropped late in 2024.

Any of you old guys have an opinion on it? Iirc, it was last used in the 50s.

I know @76-1 is giddy…
100% for this as long as it’s not some cartoonish version.

Texas has Bevo XV. Georgia has Uga XI.

We need a badass, fire-breathing bison. And if he can unload on Purdue’s sideline during a Bucket game so much the better. Gives a whole new meaning to POTFB.

On my winding drive to Bloomington I used to pass a bison farm somewhere in Indiana. Is that the connection. Indiana bison farms? It doesn’t seem like anything most people would connect with Indiana.

<sigh> It's on the state seal.

If IU is going through with this, it better be a live bison, and not some cartoon character with a big paper mache head.

Red Frazier (?) has one somewhere near Bloomington... There's another up near Ft Wayne and at least a couple of others (or more) around the state...

Wood Bison were indigenous to the state and so prolific that they hold The most prominent position on the Indiana State Seal...

During the State Bicentennial Celebration fiberglass renditions of small Bison were placed all across the state (link: https://www.in.gov/ibc/4555.htm )... Why we didn't snag a few of those to place around campus and the stadium still escapes me... If the mold is still out there I think they'd still make nice supplements to our actual mascot...

As far as having a Live Bison on site goes its just Far too dangerous for all involved...

They're wild animals with a mind of their own and unless you want a pathetic looking, skinny calf, running around out there like the fighting Sanders can barely control at Folsom Stadium in Colorado you'll have a recipe for disaster...

Even a majestic adult Bison in an enclosure is still asking for trouble because it's pretty much guaranteed that some drunk/idiot would eventually climb inside and get themselves maimed or worse... Adult male Bison weigh in around 2,000 pounds and no 3 or 4 freshman volunteers are going to be able to control one...

I'm all for the Bison as our mascot (as long as the newest rendition actually looks like a real Bison and not some cheesy cartoon character...)

Guess we'll know soon...

Hopefully Scott Dolson has made another great decision with this...

I can't wait to see the end result...

My avatar approves this message... 😎🇺🇸

F'in AI is too woke to show such an act... this is the best I could do

I can’t remember. I’d get off at some exit just after terre haute and it was winding roads for 45 minutes from the exit to Bloomington. Real pretty drive. Somewhere in that 45 minutes was a bison farm

I’m afraid of a cartoonish one too. But can you imagine how hot a real looking one will be?

If they don't bring back Mr. Hoosier Pride, they're not even trying.

He was the most embarrassing thing ever. But it was funny watching the students boo and harass him. Then remember the one with overalls and a pipe or hay sticking out of his mouth? We do NOT have a good record with these mascots. Let’s see if it really is the New Indiana.

Sounds like this one in Greene County:

There are several others around the state...

There's this one near Floyds Knobs :

It looks like there's several in the northern upper third of the state... Which means by having a Bison mascot we're basically planting an IU flag all across the state..., including up north... I Like It... 😎

Bison Mascot continued...

There will probably be a few who will feel a bit squeamish about using our mascot as a food source... I'd suggest we take the Native American approach and view the Bison as a source of our strength, a vital "circle of life" element who when properly respected revitalizes us...

I've discussed this at length with my avatar and his take is:
A) "Nobody lives forever."
and B) he'd rather go out a respected entity who's providing life and strength to others rather than ending up forgotten in a can of dog food...

A Native American perspective:

A couple of other interesting Indiana links:

Best cooking practices:

There's seemingly close to a thousand decent Bison recipes out there on the net....

Was just going to post that.

We're going to get mocked by most of college sports for adopting a mascot now and copying Colorado. Book it.
Yup. Just make it an ear of corn.
If it must be an animal, make it a Deere.
