They gave up 111 yards rushing and 438 yards passing for a total of 549 yards to Eastern Washington, an FCS program. EW also had 105 return yards. One EW reciever, Cooper Kupp, had 15 receptions for 246 yards and 3 TDs. That's an average of 16.4 yards per catch. I guess it can happen to anyone, but for teams like Oregon it is usually an aberration that can be corrected. Still, they have to be really concerned about playing Michigan State in 2 days.

The correct answer to your question is "Mike Leach". That's why.

Leach is at Washington State....who lost to Portland State 24-17 in week 1.

Eastern Washington also played with a QB starting his first game.

Think I saw where the EW QB transferred to Oregon to be in a higher profile program as a 5th year SR. Somewhat controversial. May cause a revision in that rule.

Correct, Vernon Adams, but they aren't going to change the grad transfer rule and if they did, it wouldn't be because of Vernon Adams.

I can recall some vocal Peeg's football board posters wanting Leach as the miracle worker for IU.

Considering I wasn't on the board at that time, it wasn't me but Leach was unfairly unemployed at the time after being a miracle worker at 4 straight programs.

I think a lot of his success was due to being in a conference historically attached to a smashmouth football style, and defenses built to stop it. In his time off, his Air Raid offense, othe pass-heavy attacks, proliferated- nowhere more than in the PAC-12. The results have not been good. Still, hard not to like the man. He is truly a unique guy and has been really great for college football. I'm glad WSU gave him a shot.

I wanted Mike Leach at IU..and said so. His on-field record speaks for itself. The entire episode at TT was a joke.

Leach won games, won bowls, beat ranked teams and filled the stands. Nobody can recruit to WSU.

One wonders if a few of these blue-chip QB High Schoolers would stick around to play for Leach?

IUFB could use a dose of all of this.

I don't buy that: "nobody can recruit to WSU."

Mike Price was solid there.

People on this board put waaaayyyy too much emphasis on "beautiful location" when the reality is that recruits will go play in Toilet Town if the program is good.

I mean, is there really anything "wow" about the town of Columbus OH or Tuscaloosa AL other than the football programs?

If IU lost to Portland State this board would implode.

Washington State has had more success than we have. Actually, everyone has.

The key word you use is program, not a one or two year successful team. IT takes much longer to build a program than to put together a winning season or two and bolt, especially at a traditional losing programs. I can see WSU taking 7 or 8 years to get to respectability. People don't realize how big a hole a program like an IU or WSU is in. They are not only starting over, but in a negative hole. It may take 5 years to get to even before making progress toward being in the top half of the conference.

You notice I did not put Minnesota on that list, they are not in the list of losing programs like IU. That was a much easier job to rebuild than to build IU. Minnesota has been to 8 bowl games from 2000 to 2011 when Kill took over. IU has been to 9 in its total history. To try and compare Kill's job to Wilson's is not an even comparison.

Actually, WSU won 2 conference titles with Price in his last 3 years there. They had 2 seasons with 10 wins each.

IU is obviously in a much more difficult situation. I'd argue that a good coach should be making improvements by his 5th year, however.

I do believe that our defense will be much more aggressive going forward judging by Wilson's comments. He made specific comments regarding the defensive staff over complicating things, which had the players thinking too much. We'll see if that reaps dividends but Wilson is at a very critical juncture this year.

I do think that IU was trying to be aggressive against SIU in the second half, but got burned by some blown coverages.

The staff did seem to make some adjustments to take away the QB runs at halftime. If IU had a more experienced defense, those adjustments probably could have come sooner, but that they were/could be made is a positive.
