His walking on the Basketball Team should Really help our Team Defense (in my opinion)...
"A talented two sport athlete, [Deontae] Craig has continued to say that he would like to play both football and basketball in college as recently as July in a television interview with WANE 15 in Fort Wayne."

"According to this 247Sports report ($), the Hoosiers are offering Craig the opportunity to walk-on to the basketball team — and the Hawkeyes are not."

"Craig took an official visit to IU in June and released photos of himself wearing IU basketball warm-ups — the first clue that more than just football was a possibility for him at Indiana and discussed during that visit."

So, yeah. He may even be ok at putting the ball through the hoop.

Love watching Craig on the bball floor, but he is a 6-4 post player. Think a shorter, but more skilled Freddie McSwain. Yea Freddie had a role and played well at times, but not a guy who would be a major contributor on a very good team.

In addition, if he comes, we would in reality not have him until conference play starts in January, and then it would be time before he could get into hoops shape. His biggest contribution would be a big physical, high motor kid a practice that can play spot minutes.

Football, on the other hand, dude is a stud!!!

When Randle-El played basketball he was disproportionately strong and physical on the court relative to his peers. Obviously, because of his leadership skills he was a tremendous asset for Knight's team. I doubt that occurs with Craig but you never know.

Generally, the season goes well into basketball and then conditioning wise he will be sort of misplaced as Jordan was when he came back from baseball. I would temper the enthusiasm.

Ross Hales helped IU in his one season with the basketball team. But he was 6'7" and as strong as an ox.

As others have stated, football players that also play basketball at the college level tend to miss about 1/2 the season and then when they do play they aren't ready to log major minutes due to conditioning plus not having practiced with the basketball team.

The only football player that I remember watching that was a major contributor to their basketball team didn't even play for IU. It was Charlie Ward at Florida State. Looking at his stats, he played most or all of his first 2 seasons. His last 2 seasons were shortened but he still played lots of minutes and put up good numbers.

Personally, I'd love to see a guy who can defend like McSwain join the team in mid-January. That's crunch time in the Big Ten and another tough guy who can defend and rebound is exactly what we need...

great if he wants to try both.

we've had many do that over the yrs.

even if he doesn't stay with bball his entire time here if he comes, he'll still have scratched that itch and will always have those memories as well.

if he does come and wants to stay with both his entire time here, how is that anything but a plus for both IU and he.

Julius Peppers, Tony Gonzalez, Ronald Curry, and of course Charlie Ward were all pretty damn solid on the bball court.

It's (extremely) rare, but it can happen.

EDIT: Greg Paulus, Kenny Lofton, Donovan McNabb - those are the big ones I can think of in my lifetime

didn't MSU have a player recently who played both at a high level.

on a side note, every college football coach in the nation would love to be able to raid their basketball team's roster every yr, and it has been that way forever.

D. Craig is a D1 athlete. He also played HS ball and won a State Title with Galloway, so they have some team chemistry already.

Here's an interview with D.C. Sounds like he's given the two sport approach the serious thought it deserves. I think he could do it!

Andre Rison played both for MSU, but I think there was someone more recent that you're thinking of. He was a wideout who didn't play much for the basketball team, IIRC.

And the good news is since IU Football rarely wins six games we won't miss him too much for Basketball Season.

Trey Galloway committed to IU. So IU now has a lock-down defensive player.

Matt Trannon. Built very similarly to Craig. Was a top 50 prospect in both sports coming out of high school.

Kenny Lofton is easily one of the greatest athletes to ever come out the state. The guy could so so many things really well.
