I've got a very busy Monday scheduled, and won't be on much. Just wanted to drop this thread for those who want to share their appreciation for the brave men and women who risked and sacrificed all for our country.

My family has a strong army tradition. Although he didn't die in service, but rather in retirement, I'll be remembering my grandfather, a career enlisted man, and one of the best men I've met. Good looking guy, too. Grandma was also a stunner. I don't know what happened to those genes.

RIP First Sergeant

Happy Memorial Day, Goat and everyone, my father was too young for WW II.

My great uncle Axel was a runner in WW I.

My best friend's dad served in Patton's 3rd Army. He drove supply trucks--for Patton's tanks. Ammo and fuel. Often drove right past German positions to reach his destination. I asked him once if he ever met Patton. He said Patton was on the beach when they disembarked yelling encouragement at the troops. Never talked much about it though. He died last year months before his 100th birthday.

I've read a number of first-hand accounts about WWII combat experiences. The experiences are unbelievably horrific, yet that generation came home and built a helluva post-war society and economy. In so many ways, I wonder if we are now worthy of their sacrifices.

We have been a signifiant contributor to Tunnel to Towers foundation for a few years now. They have taken on a new objective: Do something about the homeless, addicted, and mentally sick veterans. I think they do great work and deserve support.

My step dad was a 20 year veteran, my biological dad was KIA in Vietnam. So, yea, I kind of know which day is which. Today is for those who fell in service. they too deserve more than one day.
I obviously understand that. I didn't know you couldn't ALSO thank a serviceman. But you are correct you shouldn't.

Oops. Hope I didn't commit a faux pas in the OP. Obviously, I didn't mean to compare my grandfather's service to the sacrifice of someone KIA. He's just the strongest connection I have in my family to the military.

Meh, no harm, no foul. I was just informing McM. No one did anything wrong or anything to get upset or offended about. It's all good....

I have 3 uncles who received purple hearts in WWII. All have long since passed. One uncle suffered with his injuries all of his life. My father wasn't wounded but he served as company clerk (think: Radar O'Reilly) in Hawai'i, after Pearl Harbor and until the end of the war. When I was a kid we always made the rounds of cemetaries to put flags or flowers on the graves of ancestors who had served.
