The reports on him showed a below average fastball speed and overall pitching parameters. The Boys had trouble hitting him the other night. I normally watch the Live Stats for most games but didn't get to check on this one until the 8th inning on and couldn't tell much about what happened with IU's bats. I assumed he was throwing strikes and forcing the hitters hands and kept them off stride all of the 7 innings he pitched. I thought he might have been a flame thrower but it seems he is the opposite. He must have had his breaking stuff working well Friday Night. Any other thoughts on why he shut us down?

The cold weather seemed to stymy our bats and like with the Illini, we couldn't seem to get anything going at the plate. Schmitt came into the game with a history of control problems and had more walks than strikeouts, yet it seemed our hitters wouldn't lay off his first pitch or even the 2nd pitch. I have to believe that Mercer told them about his control problems leading up to the game, yet that went through one ear and out the other.

There are pitchers, and there are throwers.
Pitchers master three pitches, pitch to the corners, keep the ball down, don't give free passes with BB, WP, or HBP.
IU's staff seems to be a lot of throwers, but not pitchers.

One might think the staff was negatively impacted by the crappy defense and base running, which has not improved since the season began.

Disappointing..
