I hope CKW can go to some defense seminars this off season.

I applaud the offense. I applaud the player conduct off the field. I applaud the team attitude. But I have to admit I never would have guessed that the Mallory defensive era would have been followed by an equally horrific era - the Knorr era. For all of CKW's time here they have been continually plugging in freshman in the secondary and blaming all problems on youth. Pulling the plug on Coach Knorr was the right move. Up to now Coach Wilson has successfully distanced himself from the defensive woes. But I think the time has come for him to take some ownership. He needs to learn a lot more about what is happening on the other side of the ball. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Could this D move be as much about recruiting Fla. as it
is about changing the D philosophy?

No. It's about fixing the defense. Wilson realized that 6-6 could have been 8-4 or 9-3 with a good D. He also realized how close they were to 4-8 or 3-9, and either of those results would have had him (Wilson) fired. Things weren't getting better.

IMO the defense actually improved the last two seasons.

They went from unable to stop anybody before the Knorr hire to making occasional stops but still struggling with big plays and 3rd down defense.

I enjoyed last year knowing that IU had an opportunity to win more games because of their defensive 'improvement' under Knorr.

With this new hire, I hope the defense can cut down on big plays and improve 3rd down defense.......and IU can begin to expect winning games because of defense.

I think it's pretty obvious that Wilson expects high intensity from the defensive side.........and Knorr appears to be an all-around nice, laid back kind of coach.
The problems started early in the season. I think with our level of talent, although not elite, Wilson couldn't believe we were still that bad. The writing was on the wall as early as the SIU game.

Once you start a rebuild, you are always gonna be "young" for 4-5 years.

(Unless you are Michigan or Ahia State) you won't get the top quality recruits in your first couple of recruiting classes. You will get better - but best ... Yet.

If you commit to playing the best man (which every coach does) you will be playing the young guys. If there are injuries, you'll play young guys longer.

Once you get to a point you are recruiting real good players who still need to sit behind regulars, you are where you want to be.

It's even harder if some guys leave rather than sit.

But we have passed the first "fail point." We have maintained momentum through the "first wave".

Next year, Wilson's early fruits are gone, and we still have decent returning numbers and no "lost" recruiting class. He have more good secondary players in Spting camp than ever before. We still some size for a line. And we have a bus load of LB "bandit" guys who can either bulk up to DE or DT.

And a new hard charger to teach/lead 'em.

IMO were still moving in the right direction.

At a cost, yes.
"Welcome to Big Boy football"

Sic 'em.

I agree with what you are saying but I do wonder if it is easier to "scheme" you way to succes on O meaning you can get more production from lesser talent on O by being clever.

I think the last 2 years shows you that IU isn't just about some flukey offense. We had a ground and pound running game to back that up as well. Yes, we run up tempo but I think many of the 3-star skill positions were guys with power 5 offers.

Not suggesting we do not have a legit O but was just wondering if you don't have the horses to line up and beat the other guy in a traditional way if it is easier to have more success on O than D?

I.E. Is it easier to hide a lack of talent on offense than defense?
