How are we not talking about the brewing bribery-for-pardon scandal?

Yeah, but none of that explains why it isn't a BIG ****ING DEAL on this forum. :D

Trump is a Russian agent, he collaborated with the Russians, he violates the emoluments clause every time a foreigner stays at one of his hotels, and he’s been impeached. Why does anybody give a shit if some wealthy crook plays like Marc Rich for a staffer to put his name on a list.

First scandal fatigue. Second, if they were selling pardons, who would be surprised? Third, I am not sure we can convince his supporters it is even wrong. Lastly, the continued attacks on the vote are much more damaging to our foundations than petty theft.

I was just thinking how absolutely insane that Trump's for the past few years has been pushing and grinding down the supposed greatest country in the world to its very foundations.

Yet the very same people who believe or at least claim that they are fighting for their liberties and freedoms are the ones trying to destroy it.

Mind-boggling really.

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet.

According to the following article, attorney offices were raided about "the end of this summer":

"The filings don't reveal a timeline of the alleged scheme, or any names of people potentially involved, except that communications between people including at least one lawyer were seized from an office that was raided sometime before the end of this summer."

The actual court filings discuss communications with "senior White House officials" and say a hearing on the filings was held on August 25, 2020. The filings may be read at this link:

And, think about the timing of the August raid and hearing for a minute -- apparently, 2-3 months before the election, somebody with ties to Trump not only thought there was a good chance he would lose the election, but also thought Trump might be receptive to the pardon idea without blowing his stack at the idea.

So, is it possible Trump has known for months that his reelection was in trouble?

bookmarked for when you are OUTRAGED about some minor Biden administration scandal that's like 1% of what Trump openly did.

Related, what's up with talk of pre-emptive pardons for Guiliani and Trump's family? Don't you have to be guilty of a crime to be pardoned? Is this essentially the Trump crime family admitting that they're painted into a corner and guilty of something?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think pardons are issued with 'fill-in-the-blank' crime and a TBD date.

One thing is also certain. Between ruling out voter fraud and the Dept of Justice investigating this bribery for pardon thing, Bill Barr is probably not in line for a pre-emptive pardon.

You can't pardon yourself

The timing would probably be wrong but I thought of Michael Cohen when I read it.

I agree by the textual reading of the pardon power. That said, I bet Trump will try to
Pardon himself and argue to the SC that he can.
I honestly think he believes that the Supreme Court has to rule in his favor since he's nominated three justices. I think he'd be legitimately shocked if a ruling didn't come back in his favor and he's tweet some BS about loyalty.

I would agree, although that question has obviously never been at issue.

However, a 1974 DOJ memorandum posited this:

A different approach to the pardoning problem could be taken under Sec-tion 3 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. If the President declared that he was temporarily unable to perform the duties of his office, the Vice President would become Acting President and as such he could pardon the President. Thereafter the President could either resign or resume the duties of his office.

Take a read at the Flynn pardon. It went way beyond lying to the FBI.
Here is the text of Ford's pardon of Nixon "for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974.

.

And don't forget ... I'm pretty sure Atty Gen Walrus Barr has authority to grant fairly broad "immunity" for federal crimes, too.

This makes sense. The report yesterday was that a similar blanket pardon is being considered for Rudy and the Trump family.

Yes. Blanket pardons make sense now, after the election was decided. All the worried Trump facilitators know they need a pardon now, before the January inauguration.

But I was surprised that the pardon-for-hire stories and court filings apparently are based on actions by people looking for pardons last August or earlier. Back then, I don't think very many people were sure Trump was going to lose, but it sounds like a few must have thought so.

Thanks for posting that - I didn't realize the pardoning power had that wide-sweeping power to pardon anything that someone MIGHT have done in a given time.

Whether or not Trump/his family/Rudy will be charged with anything hasn't been made abundantly clear, which leads me to believe that any pardon for any of those people probably prove that there is fire behind all this smoke.

Tangentially, when Trump was publicly claiming he was going to prosecute and jail Hillary Clinton in 2016, no one in the Obama Administration was talking about a blanket pardon for her - or anyone else Trump et al have accused of wrongdoing. It would seem obvious as to why that is.

If it's done, it will be justified as protecting them from perpetual harassment from the leftist socialist hateful revenge seeking Democrats. Which would make sense in some opposite world where the Democrats behave like Trumpsters.

I actually think that unless egregious crimes with incontrovertible evidence can be charged, the Biden DoJ will probably chose to just put the aberration that has been the Trump administration behind us and and move forward. The Trumps will have their hands full with state presecutions as it is.

I suspect, despite the idea that many Trumpers here have developed that the DOJ is basically a political arm of either the President or the Deep State, depending on whom is in their sights, Trump and his close allies will be in danger of federal investigation only if there is evidence they committed federal crimes, and if there isn't, they won't. That said, even if there is some cause to go after him - if, for example, there is some tenuous link to him that arises during this bribery investigation - I think it would probably be best for Biden to just pardon him and tell everyone to move on.

Will there be riots? After all, that would be a bigger injustice than some career criminal violent drug offender getting shot by the police while threatening them...

Can you even remember the first time you bent over for Trump? You probably don’t even need lube anymore.

I wouldn't pardon him. I'd let the evidence come out but do or say nothing... not make any public statements on it, not have the DoJ say anything one way or the other... and let Trump twist in the wind.

I'm also going with scandal fatigue. I'm really scratching my head about Fox News attorney Joe diGenova actually calling for a fired White House employee to be murdered. I'm not too happy about my governor in Florida here claiming that masks have not been proven to be effective. But I haven't gotten on Facebook to call for him to be murdered.

I guess I'm just an old softy.
