... but jumped to #170 in 3-pt%.

But Woody couldn't shoot the ball for them. Or make sure they stayed in bed. Hardly traits of winning basketball programs.

Offensively this is who the Hoosiers have been for years. At least now the ship is pointed in the right direction.

Woody did put pride back in defense. Basically he accomplished what was in his control this season.

I’m not sure who the impact shooter is that will be on the team next season. Hood-Schifino doesn’t have a great 3-point %, I guess Gunn would be considered decent. But they’re going to be freshmen. You can’t expect them to step in and solve all of our shooting problems.

My guess is IU will have to go portaling for an impact shooter. Unless Leal and/or Bates pulls a Keegan Murray. IU needing shooters is nothing new, this goes back for years and years.

We are...as we have been (it seems forever)...in rebuilding mode.

There are some positives...such as the defense (which astutely noted above was within Woodies "control")...there were some challenges (now opportunities)...offensive efficiency, free throws, 3-pt shooting and, as is widely discussed on the board (and frequently not understood): culture.

Hood-Schifino looks like a B1G-ready guard...but I suspect he'll be our only freshman contributor.

Off-season roster changes, kids leaving...the portal, will be super interesting.

JHS may play some as a frosh, but he will not be a key offensive contributor. Doesn't seem to have the natural skills. Gunn and Banks seem to have higher ceilings as scorers, but they are not physically ready to compete at the B1G level. There is no one, in my opinion, on the roster today that can be counted on to be 15 pts./gm scorers next year if TJD and Race depart. If X comes back, maybe he can do it, but he has not been an every game scoer this year. The others? Duncomb may have some scoring ability, but physicality and defense are questions, Durr - no, Lander - a negative contributor (may score some points but will give up a lot, if he plays), Leal - a little slow on the trigger, can't create shots, defensive liability. Geronimo - needs consistency, has the physical tools but needs refinement, commits a lot of fouls. Stewart and Kopp have been major disappointments and both are average or worse defenders. Phinisee, if he comes back, plays good d but offensively not very good.

Bottom line is Woodson needs a roster overhaul and counting on the portal to do it is a suckers bet. This will take a few years.

We’ve got a 3 star kid, Gunn, who’s been playing like a 5 star and is playing better “teams” by playing in Indy. Hood-Schifinio plays in a basketball factory league that doesn’t stress fundamentals like Indiana kids will get. Also, Gunn is considered a very good 3 point shooter.

JHS looks ready in terms of size and strength and I hope he can play PG (he’s not considered to be a good shooter), but Gunn, who is very athletic, looks to be closer to an Ivey type player, which is also what we need. I think Gunn will be much closer to ready than Bates was and will see productive minutes.

Man I hope you're right...

I don't entirely disagree with you. JHS looks ready to play (IMHO)...Banks and Gunn...they're going to play at a really high level...just not next year.

All are freshman.

The only immediate help "on the way" (again IMHO) is JHS...off season is going to be very interesting.

Free throws don't make the highlight reels. But imagine what our record might be if we had done nothing else better than hitting free throws.

Lots of question marks for sure. I will just say that X certainly could average well above 15 ppg next year if he returns without TJD and Race. The others are iffy but all of Galloway, Bates, Geronimo, and Rob are over 10 points per 40 minutes this year. So assuming some of these guys start, improve a bit in the offseason, and up their minutes into the mid 30s, we could have 2-3 guys in double digits which imo is the way we will make up scoring. Other than X I doubt anyone comes close to TJDs 18 ppg but we should be much more balanced next year with multiple guys capable of averaging double digits if they are starters.

The good news is Bates, Galloway, and Geronimo will all be technically sophomores so lots of time for them to grow and improve. I wouldn’t be shocked if all three average 10+ ppg next year though assuming they are starting.

From what I've seen JHS will be able to play the point, smart with the ball and good ball handling skills, not sure how effective he will be breaking down a defense, he doesn't seem particularly quick, at least not as quick as X. Probably won't turn the ball over much. But scoring? Don't expect a lot.

Free Throw Shooting shouldn't be this difficult. If you are a D1 recruit, You should be shooting 70% coming in from High school. If I were Coaching, I would spend twice as much time on free throw shooting form and reps than I would spend on three point shooting. My thinking would be that it is more likely that 8 - 1 0 games during a year will come down to execution of free throw shooting, while only a couple will come down to 3 point shooting.

Anyone with a reasonable shooting stoke can become a 75% Free throw shooter. We were taught form and process in high school. It's this easy.
1. Stand at the line with your body square to the basket, feet shoulder width apart. Position one foot slightly in front of the other if that is more comfortable and bend your knees as You go into the shot.

2. Position the ball squarely in your hand, not off center. bring the ball up from your starting position and release the ball in front of your face. As We used to say, if You do it correctly, your eyes will be looking over the top of the ball and seeing the rim at point of release.

3 . Release the ball with your fingertips. Your shot should have a tight spin with backspin on the ball

4. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.
