Debating with a couple buddies the value of home field. Every home team has won easily even though the visitors brought strong crowds. One guy thinks a big visiting crowd should neutralize the advantage. Looks to me like it’s a huge advantage to sleep in your own bed, eat where you normally eat, and go thru normal pregame stuff. Travel always brings hassles.

I usually think playing at home in basketball is worth 8-10 points. Any thoughts about football points?

Playing on your home field is an advantage. Why not divide ticket availability 50/50!

I don’t want to hear any more of these SEC apologists debating about our team being in over Bama or Ole Miss. The SEC just got manhandled in The Shoe. I thought we were overpowered there. That pales in comparison to this shellacking. The same Tennessee team that beat Bama.
I like the word spin the put on these first round games. IU was “dominated.” Okay, fair. Then they talk about OSU “beating a really good Tennessee team.” If you are a brand name, they soften the language. Clemson was down 31-10 but put in a “gritty performance.” Cignetti is just too brash for the media, so they are going after him from here on out.

Agree, those are hard places to play. You know that the system is not interested in fairness when it gives the better rated team the home field advantage and we saw that all weekend.
My dilemma/question is why do that for the 5-8 ranked teams but they won’t do that for the top four ranked teams. They, if anyone, should be the ones getting the advantage.

Regarding your last statement, I like my coaches “too brash for the media”. When “they go after him from here on out”, it gives IU attention and keeps it there, something we haven’t had since The General fought his battles on the polished hardwood.

I can live with the auto-byes. A jumbled bracket is fun, and if they don't get byes, the conference champs get punished with less prep time.

The home games are crap though.
I get the idea of home games. They give college football it's college feel. That pageantry is what defines college football vs. other sports. However, the advantage is too big.

How about when they announce the matchups, the 2 teams then blind bid. They each secretly write down how many points they're willing to give the other team in order to have the game played on their homefield. Then they reveal their totals and the highest offer wins. If it's a tie, the better seed wins with that total.

No, I know that won't happen but it's a bummer that homefield advantage doesn't work out.

Cignetti should just go full Bob Knight on the media. These clowns deserve it.

I agree, to a point... but right now CCC has shown he can handle just about anything thrown at him.

Fortunately, IU has one major national media guy who will stand by IU and CCC .. and his following is HUGE and seems to still be growing

Pat McAfee....

Pat McAfee is the only reason I stayed tuned to the ESPN Pre-Game Show

McAfee is CCC's Bob Hammel...

Difference is McAfee is followed nationally while Hammel's reach barely got to Indy...

Like McAfee or not, it's a good thing having him in CCC's corner.

He has the playing experience and popularity to backup what he says and to neutralize whatever Herbstreit and the other clowns want to spew.

“McAfee is CCC’s Bob Hammel”…a brilliant analogy here and indeed, a TV sports analyst’s audience is much farther reaching than a small town newspaper’s sports journalist.

Coach Cignetti’s enthusiasm is quotable. Mike Woodson’s lack of enthusiasm is not.

Well, the top 4 ranked are not the top 4 seeded.

At least in the first round, each of the games had the higher ranked (and seeded) team playing at home.

The above doesn’t mean I agree with the set up.

Look on the bright side:

For years, the only images we ever had of Bigfoot were captured in grainy 8mm footage from hikers and enthusiasts out in the wilderness. Now, he’s actually coaching basketball, at IU no less! And, he has access to a mic, holds press conferences and we’ve discovered he likes wine and cigars!

I agree.
I had recorded the ohio vs ten game on esp 1 and esp2. After watching the first quarter on esp1, I switched to Pat and his entertaining crew for the remainder of the game. I’m not sure I want a steady diet of it, but it was better than watching esp1.
Esp has lost its edge and seemed to have become biased as a means to bump up their viewership. It will be interesting if the regular esp announcers, especially good ones like Herbstreet, stay on esp or jump ship.

I didn't watch 2nd half last night.... Did Kirk go on a rant about how Tennessee didn't belong on the field?

In Tennesee's defense, their Back, who I think was SEC Offensive POY, was coming off a hamstring injury, and reinjured early in the game...as were two starting receivers. Tennessee does not have depth to overcome this, like O$U. CCC is not going to stroke the media, as they would like. Hopefully, next year will help dispel some of the bs..
Regardless, this staff is exciting and competitive.
What a year !!

If IU demolishes next year’s schedule and gets another invite, will any of these clowns admit they wrong and there really is something significant being built in Bloomington?

I kind of hope Cig tones it down a notch or two, but never, ever bows down to anyone bad mouthing IU right now.

If they keep the same format where the higher seed gets the home game, I would guess that the road teams would win 10% of these games at most. And there will be a lot of blowouts like we witnessed this year.. As others have stated, the home field advantage is almost insurmountable.

There was a lot of hype for these games this year, but I'm not sure how long casual fans will remain interested if the blowouts continue. The obvious answer is neutral site games, but there would be issues with that setup as well.

The mountain west doesn't get an auto bye. Boise St. did this year, but that probably wont be the norm. And no, I don't think they should.
Why did they get one this year? Maybe I should have said why should the mtn. West get an auto bid?

Because they were one of the four highest ranked conference champs. Most years, the byes will go to the P4 champs. But, this year they played Oregon close on the road and won every other game they played. And the B12 ate itself and the ACC was nearly as bad.
