H.R. McMaster in as NSA

Good choice, huge upgrade to Flynn obviously. But I'm sure there are gripes to be had. Let's hear them.

No gripes. He's exactly what Trump needs. An independent thinker that isn't afraid to stand up to anyone when he feels he is right on something.

A bonus is that he's not a conspiracy theorist (Flynn).

Trump had to make a great pick here, and it appears he did.

No reason to gripe going in. The real test is going to be how he stands toe-to-toe with Bannon. Those two are going to butt heads, and McMaster's greatest value will be in his ability to persuade Trump in those situations.

He seems to be a good choice, but what's with Trump's insistence on having a military man in this position. I'd like to see him appoint an experienced civilian, such as Richard Haass.

I don't disagree with this in principle, especially considering the relative lack of qualified civilians on the NSC at the moment, but at this point, I think having a competent intellectual is more important.

Yes. I suppose I shouldn't nitpick the rare occasions he appoints a sane person to an important job. I hope the guy cleans out Flynn's staff.

Would this experienced civilian have been more suitable to you?

No can do. Haas criticised Trump during the campaign.

Everything I've read sounds like he is a huge upgrade from Flynn. And as far as I know, he doesn't have an awful son either.

Maybe so, but he still has Bannon to deal with -- and you know Trump values absolute loyalty over abilities.

Does Bannon have absolute loyalty to Trump? Or is he some evil mastermind trying to implement his warped agenda by conning his way to the de facto presidency.

You guys need to get together and figure out your narrative.

Regardless his motivation or end goals, you do not have a political hack in the NSC. That shapes the information being presented and the responses a president makes.

It's a great pick and I hope that McMaster is as good as we all think he should be. He basically set the groundwork for successful (if there is such a thing) COIN operations and had Petraeus' ear. That's enough for me.
