Good News

Not necessarily, but termination of a legendary player who turned out to be crappy coach is both and the same. Tarnishing that well-earned legacy has to be considered punishment, no?
I think it could be done in a way that doesn't tarnish anything. Mike Woodson the player is not going to be airbrushed out of the old team photos and record books. That legacy will always be there. As a coach, he's had two decent seasons and one bad season. People are dismissed from jobs all the time, it's not necessarily a tarnishing event, just thank him for his efforts and say we're deciding to go another direction. If anything, it's less tarnishing than more losing seasons would be.

At his age he's not going to be applying for any other coaching jobs anyway. This is his swan song.

During Monday’s press conference, Dolson credited Buckner with being a liaison in a search process that inevitably landed a longtime NBA coach and former Hoosier as the basketball team's next leader. Buckner, who spent years in the NBA as a player and coach, defers back.

“The man can coach,” Buckner said. "He’s not soft-spoken then. He’s very animated. He’s engaged in the game and with his players. And the official occasionally gets in the way. So he deals with that, as well.”

This hire brings happiness to Buckner, but not just because both of his golfing buddies are now close by. And it’s not just because IU’s program will be led by a protégé of Knight.

Woodson is nothing like knight at all.
Are these actually Buckner quotes? Not soft-spoken? Engaged with the game and players? Deals with officials?

Damn, was Quinn drunk when he said that? WTF? These are almost exactly the things I don’t see any of during these 3 years.

Well, to be fair. Nearly every coach gets fired. This certainly wouldn't be the first time that Woody was. His year 3 in NY was pretty bad and he got fired after that. I would assume that he was also fired from the Hawks job.

Just a fact of life that coaches get fired. Since most get rehired, I don't think it really "tarnishes" anything.
