Indiana (assuming you're here) has really embraced girls wrestling and several HS have built some nice programs.

Its no surprise that 2 out of the 5 girls on the last Olympics team were both from Indiana.

The first ever HS State championship series for Girls is going on right now. Sectionals just completed, Regionals coming next weekend.

There are still a handful that are competing in the boys divisions including a girl who is currently ranked #1 in the boys division and placed 6th last year at boys state which is extremely difficult. Indiana wrestling is still a 1 class sport so there are no divisions. 300+ HS with wrestling programs, only top 16 get to state and place top 6 is a HUGE achievement here.

The other place this is really beneficial is colleges are now creating women's programs at a pretty high rate. This is VERY important for Title IX implications. Title IX has DECIMATED men's wrestling the past 4 or 5 decades due to the rules about equal representation of athletes in college athletics. While the goal of creating more opportunities for women might have been good, colleges did not do this and simply cut men's sports instead. Wrestling was almost always at the top of the chopping block. Hoping the changing tides will lead to some reversals of that and colleges will be able to re-instate some cut programs in the future.

I believe the women’s wrestling was approved for the NCAA division one starting next winter. It will be interesting to see how many programs jump at the opportunity and the amount of scholarships offered. I believe IU has a women’s club team. I know there’s been wrestling teams in lower divisions so we’ll see what happens.

Having girls cut weight would be a bad idea. I hope Eppy's coach doesn't advocate for that.

I agree cutting weight can be dangerous if not done in a healthy manner. I could be wrong but I believe cross country runners have actually had more serious problems with weight disorders. I’ve heard that some girls have broken bones when their bodies can’t handle the physical demands of the sport due to weight loss.

I just checked out the current boys rankings and you’re right about the girls still competing with the boys. At the 106 weight the #1 & 7th ranked wrestlers are both girls. That’s impressive. So far they’re both undefeated on the year. You seem to know a lot about wrestling. Are you a coach or have a kid participating?

I wrestled and coached for many years but have been out of the sport directly for several years now. The guys i wrestled/coached with are still coaching our former HS team and feeder programs so I'm indirectly involved but also still pay a lot of attention in general.

Well regionals were today down at Mooresville High School. It was a great atmosphere. My kid qualified as a 4 seed which meant she had to wrestle one of the 1 seeds. She upset the girl with a 10-3 decision. Her next match was against the #9 ranked girl in the state and the road ended there. She got pinned in 48 seconds. If you told me at the beginning of the year she would qualify for regionals I would have r laughed in your faces. Honestly I had very low expectations given she had never wrestled before. She’s def got the bug now and can’t wait to get back in the gym. A great day win or lose. Btw, the girl that pinned her lost in the championship round to an amazing freshman wrestler currently ranked #1 and undefeated. She got pinned in 45 seconds. Nobody has lasted a full round against her.
