Game Thread: Indiana vs. Cincinnati

Any reason why they moved the start time up? Weather?

Top 1st: Sophomore right-hander Jonathan Stiever gets the start for the Hoosiers, his first action on the mound since Feb. 24. Three up, three down for Stiever to start out, including a strikeout.

Unless something happened, looks like the intention of Stiever's brief appearance was to get some work in. Again, first action on the mound since late February.

Top 4th: Cincinnati right fielder A.J. Bumpass reaches on a walk, then steals second with two outs. Senior outfielder R.J. Thompson flies out to end the inning. Hoosiers hold, still scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Bottom 4th: After a groundout by Krupa, Gorski bunts to reach 1st. Dedelow follows with a single to shallow center. Miller then hits an RBI double to advance Dedelow to third and score Gorski. Matheny continues the damage with a 2-run RBI single to score Dedelow and Miller. Those three runs coming with one out. The inning ends with Sowers grounding into a double-play.

Indiana 3, Cincinnati 0.

Top 5th: Santiago lines out to shortstop, then Haberkorn walks. Haberkorn steals second, then scores off an RBI single by DeAnna. On the next at-bat, DeAnna is picked off attempting to steal second. Noda grounds out to shortstop to end the inning.

Indiana 3, Cincinnati 1.

Top 6th: Cincinnati's first two batters fly out to center, then Bumpass singles through the left side. McVey flies out to right to end the inning.

Indiana 3, Cincinnati 1

Bottom 7th: Sowers fouls out, then Cangelosi reaches first on a hit by pitch. Eustace comes in as a pinch-runner for Cangelosi at first. Butler grounds out, advancing Eustace to second. Stratten pops up to first to end the inning.

Still 3-1 Indiana entering the eighth.

Top 9th: Lloyd strikes out the first Cincinnati batter but walks the second. Strikes out the third, allows a single to the fourth. Two runners on with one out. Then Cincinnati records its second out on another strikeout. Bearcats ground out to second to end it.

FINAL: Indiana 3, Cincinnati 2.

Glad to see us close this one out. I was concerned we were facing another late inning meltdown like in the last game in Hawaii. It's a good win.

Any speculation why Luke Miller and Matt Lloyd were pitching at a crucial time in the game? Was the bullpen stretched that thin?

My guess is, it was a midweek game and Indiana didn't want to have to use up much of its bullpen or a key weekend starter (Stiever) heading into a Big Ten road series this weekend.

Baseball Holds on For a 3-2 Victory over Cincinnati

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (10-8-1) won for the sixth time in seven contests with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats (10-10) on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Luke Miller recorded two hits and an RBI, while freshman Jake Matheny picked up single to score two runs.

Sophomore Jonathan Stiever started and pitched one inning of perfect baseball. Sophomore Tim Herrin took over and improved to 2-2 in the four inning outing, allowing one hit and one earned run. Senior Luke Stephenson and junior B.J. Sabol each picked up an inning of scoreless relief, while junior Matt Lloyd earned his first career save.

After three and a half scoreless innings, the Hoosiers made some noise. Freshman Matt Gorski started it off with a bunt single for his 13th hit of the season. Senior Craig Dedelow followed the base-hit with a single of his own, putting runners at first and second. Miller doubled down the left field line to to score Gorski. The next batter, Matheny, cleared the bases with a two-run single, giving the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead.

The Bearcats responded in the fifth inning with a run scoring single to right field to make it 3-1. Herrin sent down the next two batters to preserve the Hoosiers' lead.

The Bearcats chipped away with an eighth inning RBI single as Cincinnati cut the deficit to 3-2. Lloyd pitched the final out of the eighth and a scoreless ninth to notch the save.

Indiana begins a three-game series with the Northwestern Wildcats this Friday at 4 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.

IU ace exits early as Hoosiers win in pitcher's duel
by Taylor Lehman

IU ace and sophomore starting pitcher Jonathan Stiever hadn’t pitched since he went six innings in a win against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 24.

That’s why it may have come as a surprise to see sophomore starter Tim Herrin replace Stiever after just one inning of work against Cincinnati on Wednesday. Stiever hadn’t pitched in nearly a month but retired the top of the first inning in just 10 pitches and was finished for the day.

Herrin would go on to pitch four innings and earn the win, and the Hoosiers defeated the Bearcats in revenge fashion, 3-2, after losing to them earlier in the season.

As for Stiever’s outing, IU Coach Chris Lemonis said it was a scripted 1-inning start.

“We were just getting him out there,” Lemonis said. “He’ll start this weekend. He’ll be ready to go.”

Stiever’s one-inning appearance came on a day when the Hoosiers needed their pitching the most. IU batters were only able to put six hits on the board against strong Cincinnati pitching.

Lemonis said he told his team its offense was keyed entirely by four at-bats in the fourth inning, which included runs batted in by freshman catcher Jake Matheny and sophomore infielder Luke Miller.

Much like IU’s most recent series in Honolulu, Hawaii, the pitchers needed to tame the opponent as much as possible. Four of IU’s last five games have been decided by one run.

With a lackluster Hawaii series from IU starting pitchers — only one of the four pitchers lasted longer than three innings — there is a looming need for an ace like Stiever to anchor the staff.

That’s why Lemonis and the IU coaching staff are taking their time with the sophomore pitcher and the soreness in his arm, the coach said.

With so many tight games, Lemonis said he and his staff are looking to develop more arms for back halves of games. Junior infielder Matt Lloyd made two appearances in Hawaii, and Miller found his way to the mound as well.

“He’s talented,” Lemonis said of Miller. “He throws hard. He hasn’t pitched a lot. We’re just trying to find some keys at the end. I wish we would have had a little bigger of a lead to run him out there.”

After senior Luke Stephenson and junior B.J. Sabol both pitched in relief, Miller entered the game with a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning. The third baseman surrendered two hits and an earned run and neared 90 miles per hour on the radar.

Miller said he knew he would possibly pitch against Cincinnati and added he needs to pitch more to become more effective.

Lloyd continued to prove that he can also perform on the mound by getting out of Miller’s jam in the eighth with a one-run lead and then finishing off the Bearcats in the top of the ninth.

“He’s our guy at the end right now,” Lemonis said of Lloyd. “We’ve got a couple other guys too, but we’ve never closed with just one guy.”

At one point in the eighth inning, Lemonis moved Miller from third to the mound, placed junior pitcher Kade Kryzsko at third base and inserted Lloyd into the designated hitter spot in order to keep him in the game to pitch later.

While the bullpen continues to be a puzzle for the manager and his coaching staff, Lemonis said he knew Wednesday’s game would be a battle, especially because Cincinnati was coming off a victory against previously undefeated No. 1 Louisville.

“We knew it was going to be a battle,” Lemonis said. “It’s kind of become a rivalry here. We’ve played some really tough, close games over the last couple of years. Anytime you can win and put that on your résumé, it’s huge.”

It was a bullpen game, getting guys some work in a game situation that they would normally simulate in practice mid week. Not only that there have been some injuries to the pitching staff, hence why Lloyd has been pitching, and miller getting some brief time yesterday. Stivers was a scripted outing.

And I would think perhaps we can't keep using the same people that keep blowing it in the 9th? Not to mention names......but we have to try something different. Good to see Lloyd stepped up, and got it done (albeit barely).
