The results from a new Fox News poll describe a pretty divided electorate, but also one that might provide opportunities for both parties to pick off some voters. Some highlights:

1. The Jan. 6 investigation has more support than might be expected, with large majorities of both Dems and Indies, and even 48% of Repubs, describing it as either somewhat or very important.
2. Sizable defections among certain issues - that is, where a significant minority of one party actually prefers the other party on a specific issue - include Democrats leaning GOP on inflation and border security, and Republicans leaning Dem on climate change and abortion. This suggests to me an obvious advantage for the GOP in a climate where everyone has inflation as their #1 issue, but it also provides an opportunity for Dems, especially in the expected context of the presumed overturning of Roe.
3. Republican voters are especially interesting on guns. A majority of Republicans support all of the gun laws asked about save one - a full ban on semi-auto assault rifles - despite the fact that a majority of Republicans also say gun laws aren't the preferred way to address gun crime.
4. On issues of personal status, voters are clearly allowing their partisan preference to color how they view their own lives. 45% of Repubs and 51% of Indies say utility costs are a "major" problem for their families, but only 30% of Dems say the same. 61% of Republicans are "falling behind" financially, while only 29% of Dems are? Neither of those is realistic. For a comparison, all three groups have roughly equal numbers when asked about the cost of healthcare.
5. Top line basics: Biden's approval hits a new low (43%), but GOP only has a 3 point lead on the generic Congressional ballot, down from 7 points last month.

Shows how hard and unfortunate it is that we have to fit under one tent

I was listening to a podcast recently that talked about how difficult certain polling is in a highly partisan world. Ask a D how the economy is doing under an R POTUS and they’ll say it’s in the shitter. Rs would do the same if a D was in the White House.
