I don't remember Cupps getting destroyed by either of those guys. I remember the IU team he played for getting thumped by those teams, but Cupps doing just fine defensively in those games.

Caught a glimpse of Dakich (not intentionally), but he said he believes Enright will announce for IU soon.
Unfortunately I was there and watched it. Enright is a much better defender than Cupps. Enright actually has great instincts on defense.

Where did Hansberry go?? That guy can rebound--11.0 rebounds per every 40M for his career. And is a goof FT shooter. Takes too many 3s (29% career), but hopefully that was because they didn't have many options. He's presently not in the portal.

Probably had better coaching that Cupps. I like Cupps sorry he is leaving, with coaching he is a younger Enright but probably better.
Harris and Hansberry are both former Illinois recruits tied to Chester Frazier who may be following DeVries. I don't think IU is in a position to turn down an all-B12 defensive player. I'm not suggesting he starts and plays 35 mpg, but like Enright, you can hide guys in lineups who excel on other areas of the floor. Harris paired with DeVries and an elite scoring 2 guard makes his offensive prowess less concerning. When's the last team IU had a wing defender that could take the opposing teams best scorer out of his game?
There's absolutely nothing wrong with Hansberry or Harris. Hansberry is a rim runner 5 who screens and runs the floor. He rebounds and protects the rim defensively. Perfectly complementary piece for what DD wants. And he doesn't command 30+ mpg either.
I'm not seeing Cupps being better than Enright. Enright is at least as good a shooter and a far better passer. Cupps' assist #s were crap. And he almost never shoots.

I think getting back to my main point...we need high level backcourt guys. Conwell was a great example. I listed New Mexico's Dent on my list...obviously no idea if he'll portal or not, and if IU would get in on him. Just referencing guys "like that". Watching guys like Butler, Oweh, Boswell at Illinois, guys that don't really have weaknesses, and don't need to be surrounded by certain types of other guys... I'm hoping for a handful of those types of guys.

The only guys I wouldn't mind seeing back are MR and B. Tucker, and that's only if the HC determines that both guys are coachable.
MR would have to be motivated/taught to defend & rebound with more vigor, and to pass out of double teams.
Tucker would have to realize he's not a star, and agree to take better 2s and almost no 3s until he's developed a shot.
Don't know if either guy can be reformed.
I wouldn't want to mess with Rice. He's a combo guard that can't pass or shoot. He'd just get in the way and take up NIL that could be better spent elsewhere.
It "sounds" like Malik will end up going to Georgia. He was originally committed to Mike White... its closer to home... I'm sure he'd have a big role down there.
Get an elite level 2 guard (Conwell or Dent who I think would be the #1 player in the portal if he enters) to pair with Tucker and then build from there. Those two are going to take the majority of the team shots when on the floor. Need a PG who can get them the ball (Enright), a 3rd guard/wing 3 and D type player (this fits Powell to a T), and then a low volume 5 who can rebound and protect the paint (Hansberry can fill this role in some capacity regardless if he starts or not). There's always room for a Sincere Harris type player who can play 20-25 mpg and guard the best teams perimeter.
I just think too many people are looking at IU's NIL and expecting DeVries to bring in 7-8 type alpha's who all have a shot first mentality. Roster construction at IU the last 8 years have been terrible. Time to start bringing in guys who fit and define certain roles. Too many people gawking at players because they see their stat line that doesn't include a 15 ppg scorer or a 40% 3pt shooter.
Will be nice for a change. Sencire Harris is a guy that will easily be overlooked in the portal (assuming he enters) because he doesn't have a good offensive stat line. He's an elite wing defender who was on the B12 all-defensive team last season. Absolutely need a guy like that who can be a spot starter or play 20-25 mpg off the bench.

I'm as big of a fan of complimentary players as the next guy...but there are a bevy of complete, all around studs out there, I'm sure...that we don't need to swing for the fences for Alpha guys, as you put them...but then also don't have to go with too many specialized guys like Enright maybe, Hansberry maybe...
I used to watch them on tv in the mid 70's (Gonnella bread commercials), with Joe Ponsetto, Gary Garland, Corzine, and others. Not much hoops on back then, but they were fun to watch. Of course, Ray Meyer was classic.
Never understood all the focus on offensive stats when a player is a good/great defender. You can’t have 5 guys that all average 20ppg. I guess that would be cool, but it won’t happen. Defense can be played well the whole game. There will always be off nights on shooting. Every team needs those couple of guys who can play defense like a motherf****r. A player who is both an elite defender and scorer won’t be on your team more than a season anyway.
I’m’ of the belief that every team needs an Enright type of player. He’s a veteran. He’s intelligent. He does have games where he scores anywhere from 5 to double digits in points. He had 18 against UCONN this year.
He’s not going to be the most gifted player on the court but he understands the game.
Sounds like the type of guy you want as a leader.

Jayden Stone was supposed to be their starting 2 guard. Averaged 20 a game at Detroit-Mercy two years ago before getting hurt before the start of the season. Has a redshirt year left if he wants it.
Powell is the guy we want the most. Small and Okani are out of eligibility. Harris and Hansberry are more than likely tied to Chester Frazier as he brought them over from Illinois when DeVries hired him. Doubt Harris would start but he'd be a hell of a 6th man.
If somebody is afraid of Enright it's because Enright is a lot better than what he appears.
We have to get the dawg at pg right. He got Small, or did Frazier get Small? In his system we need Ballo-esque big with a serviceable back-up. After that we have T-Rock, with probably Goode, Sisley, Powell and Enright. You throw in Udih and Brisco. It's not too bad. We have plenty of scratch.

Easy way to check that... If they're keeping Reese's Cups, Almond Joy Bars, and Peanut M&Ms stocked up then they Are trustworthy..., if not, well then Scot needs to take a close look at his low level staffing... 😉😎🍺
Those are good points. Like you pointed out it's all about how the roster is constructed.
He has to fill out a roster on a budget, even with a solid budget. I'm not worrying about a guy he is likely getting at a discount due to injury who has the upside of being able to be a good 7-8th man or good 15 minute backup point guard who can play bigger minutes if required. Need some guys like that. And, for year one maybe it's a great price and lets him later be more aggressive in his offers. Also, I'll take an assist guy that already knows his system! That's a big edge in getting the team on the same page.
My preference is both. Enright is Rice insurance in case he can’t get with the program.
The only thing is are they going to be OK with a reduced role. It would be good for us, but they may not like it.
No, you want the 7th and 8th guys first, before they see that they aren't likely to win the starting job because some stud just signed.

I'd heard someone else talking about this kid and they said he's a really good defender. The "run through a wall type". He knows, better than anyone on this board, what it takes to build a competitive roster at this level and I'll trust him. Who says he's recruiting this kid as a starter? He's probably able to give him more NIL money than he could get anywhere else, and is coming to play for his old coach. I'd be shocked if we don't sign another PG or combo, or 2.
Harris played 26 mpg last year and and Hansberry 23 mpg. I'm not sure they would be taking a huge reduced role. Harris may not "start" but would be in games down the stretch with his ability to defend. 26 mpg is pretty customary for a 6th man no?
Thank you. It hasn't been easy, that's for sure. But I grew up watching Rod Strickland toast David Rivers (Notre Dame) every year.
