Firing teachers because of not calling

yes

In Indiana public schools...

I was taught that you only taste sweet, sugar, sour, and bitter with certain taste buds on specific parts of your tongue (BS).
I was also taught that evolution was a discredited, crackpot idea.
I was also taught that AIDS (new at the time) was God's punishment to heathens

It's a wonder that I wasn't also taught that the true value of pi is exactly 3.
I went to Indiana public schools and wasn't taught any of those three things. I think that is all bogus about Indiana's public schools and I went to three elementary schools, one junior high, and three high schools - in southern Indiana. I've heard those claims before and it definitely doesn't fit with my experience at all.

Sybil confused personalities and stories

Journalists shouldn't use it when gender is known, but you're still wrong to insist that they is only plural. It never has been, and if you were taught that, you were taught incorrectly.

I use "he, or she" when the gender is unknown.

From now on I will use "they" as it sure is easier. Anyone who is an arsonist should know better, as they will be caught.

The irony of posters with fake names arguing about preferred names.
Another irony is the number of posters who say they won't use "he or she" because they think it is "confusing" but propose saying "they" which they claim is not confusing because they believe it is both singular and plural at the same time.

The use of "they" as singular dates back to...

1375.

So what you're saying is definitions change over time.

What year in indiana public school were you, when you were taught about aids?

Anyone know what city Cray was from?
Have to come back to this.

Your quote of me was in response to my saying teachers have a cake job. Ect. They do.

I know a few. My best friend has been one since graduating college. I'll keep it brief to lower my carbon footprint(wait, where did that go?). He married a woman I strongly suggested against, infidelity and so forth. She's a grade school principal. They worked it out. Happened in teachers lounge btw.
We all went to high school together, my friend and I took twins to prom, he married his date, mine went to prom with me because she was a sophomore and her only way in.

I try to live a life I don't regret.

I just wanted to go fishing with my grandpa.

I've been through some trying times the last couple years. Started a new job last Monday I'll be going to night's next week 4 12 hour shifts. He says, damn, that's a load of hours. A teacher tellin me 48 hrs is a lot?

48-52 is the sweet spot.

It doesn't matter what you use, as long as the reader understands you.

The point here is that people have been using "they" to refer to individuals of unspecified gender for centuries. It's not some kind of new invention. It's part of the English lexicon. People who have a problem with that need to get over it.

So centuries ago people signed their parchment letters and wrote after their names, “Refer to me as they rather than he.”? I don’t think so.

You're too smart and too honest to be making this kind of argument. I have never claimed that it is standard English practice to use "they" in place of "he" or "she" when those pronouns would be appropriate. I have simply pointed out that there are cases when speaking or writing where it is useful to have a singular, non-gendered pronoun, and for the past few centuries of the English language, that pronoun has been "they."

Where in the world did you go to school...???

I find his supposed Indiana experience highly unlikely...

I attended Indiana public schools and the teachers I had the good fortune of knowing were much better at their job than most of the professors I encountered later.

Had a friend who attended Broad Ripple H.S. (60's & 70's) and he and his sister had a similar experience... Same thing with another friend who attended Warren Central (60's & 70's)...

Evolution was never questioned...

A couple of my teachers actually taught college courses at Indiana Central (now University of Indianapolis) in the evening...

My post is exactly how some want to use “they” these days, and it’s ridiculous. I won’t do it.

I'm not telling you to. And by drawing a line from "they has traditionally been used as a singular pronoun in certain situations" to "I am being forced to use the wrong pronouns when I don't want to," you are making the worst kind of slipper-slope argument, in that not only is it illogical, it requires you to deny a demonstrably factual antecedent, which actually undermines your argument.

On high school I focused on math and chemistry. No clue what they taught us in English, I learned mine from my parents and they never breathed word one about grammar.

Chomski would probably argue we’ve been using transformational grammar for eons too. It’s only recently Desantis got his panties in a bunch about it. (j/k)

Jennings County schools
According to your CV on the UF website, you graduated from Wabash with your undergrad chem degree in '84. The AIDS pandemic was first introduced to the world in a medical journal in June of '81. Unless you graduated HS in '82 and only spent 2 years at Wabash before earning your degree, how did Jennings County schools teach you that AIDS was God's punishment to heathens?

I'm not budging on this one. I grew up with the plural they and it was specifically taught to be plural, and it was used as plural from elementary to grad school and in life, until recently. Journalists are now using a singular they in articles even when the person they are talking about is known to be a he or she. It makes the articles confusing.
Like Goat, I couldn’t care less what you choose to do. At the same time, no doubt you’re going to want to understand others if they happen to use this form, your friends, family, colleagues, whoever.

To me, the easiest way to understand this is just two different meanings for the same word. Practically every word in English has multiple definitions. Even though we think of pronouns as grammatical items, they also have meaning. So to me, it’s just an odd way to use the word but at the same time understandable. Goat does an excellent job of explaining the difference in meanings and their respective usages.

If you couldn't care less, you wouldn't bother to post to me. ;) I'll use the plural "they" as is appropriate, which is 99 percent of the time. If the gender of the person is unknown, I might use they and I might use he/she. However, he/she is what I most often use if I don't know the gender of the person, occasionally s/he.

I have no problem referring to a trans man as he and a trans woman as she, but I won't be referring to any single known person as they.

We've beaten this dead horse enough. ;)

I couldn’t care less in the sense of wanting to control your actions or “winning an argument.” I do care about you as a good fellow human being. 😉

Guess I'm on his ignore list. Can't seem to answer the question.

That's actually kind of preferrable to the other thing some posters do, which is double- and triple-down on their BS and then spam the thread with the same repeated BS over and over again.
Would be better though if he didn't do it in the first place.

I made a post with my information to make a point. Another poster sent me a pm to suggest otherwise. Smart poster btw.

My point was probably misunderstood to most.

If you're going to post shit that's easily verifiable then don't. @outside shooter
@hookyIU1990. Looked him up.

Make your own assumptions.

Me? Not skeered. If you saw my address I'll take you on a tour and we'll eat some good to great food, depending on what you want.

I told him about it and suggested he take it down. Still there last I looked, but he proved a grand point about funding being cut.

This is an example of why the internet and social media is ruining social discourse.

We called this fool out and he, or maybe they, or he/her or whatever it calls itself these days just doesn't respond.

I posted my address to prove a point. Since deleted. Point was, I have nothing to hide.
