Feast week does not disappoint

Even with summer hype.
I never thought this team was 2nd or 3rd..
Now..It's more like 6th or 7th..
And that could be wishful thinking...
3/4ths of the coaches in this league would easily have our team in the top 3 this year. We have insane talent. Myles rice was amazing last year. Woody wants him to give it to Ballo at the top of the key.

I question the idea that our talent is insane. We have more talent than last year, but the same level of coaching.

11-9 was my guess at the beginning of the season. After watching some games, I think that's going to take some luck.

Cav,
You may be right. But it is difficult for me to tell we have insane talent when we get steam rolled by other teams. Those teams seem to have insane talent in comparison. But the coaching component is critical.
One lacking talent category is outside shooting. If MM is defended well we dont have reliable perimeter scoring.

Isn’t it insane, giving the ball at the top of the key to Ballo to start the offense? Just makes my blood boil.

No it's not insane, it's a Princeton high post set, generally going into a sideline zoom, with other options available and it's not the whole offense.. lmao. Some of you are hilarious, you ask for movement and off ball screening and when we run something with movement and off ball screening, you complain, just to complain, without even understanding what you're complaining about.

There's actually things worth criticizing, that ain't it .. maybe instead actually watch the whole play not just the ball and then complain that it gets players open but we instead focus on getting the ball to the wrong player on the block instead of the open shooter who can shoot or rotate the ball ..

We run that set but when we throw to the post nobody moves. The female announcer in Bahamas pointed it out a number of times.

I think our defense is really why we suck so much. Our constant over helping and switching is so bad. We are lost always. Everyone has to be on the same page, and we aren’t even reading the same book.

There's movement while the set is run. No one needs to move on the post entry pass especially when they're the guy on the 3 line with their defender 10' away from them. The ball needs to move.. The problem isn't the set, it's too much emphasis on big to big passing, or post scoring, instead of inside out passing. We need more balance.

It’s positioning …watch how many times the wing defender is in a position that is not fundamentally sound. Ass facing lane as opposed to baseline. Elementary stuff.

We need an inside out game or a cutter moving to the ball. We have zero offensive rebounding also with the way we stand around the perimeter

A lot of teams do it and Ballo proved early against Gonzaga that he was effective. The action before entry is awful and our gaurds can't consistently create a good entry angle. And there is that part where Ballo and our gaurds routinely get outrun to the other end.

There's a two cutters on that play, plus a weakside shift, and multiple other options.

Offensive rebounding has everything to do with ball watching and effort and very little with offensive positioning.

Same with the defensive side, they don't box out well and don't anticipate or react quickly to long rebounds. I suspect they're more concerned with getting down court in transition.

I don’t see them making it either. The whole non conference schedule was dependent on a good showing in the Bahamas and we shit the bed. Nothing is going to change as far as how we play. Occasionally we will out talent someone, but we will never be able to beat good teams consistently with Woodson on our sideline. I would guess we are looking at a .500 record in the B1G.

Sorry I disagree. It’s not effective. Just a few times as a trial, I like to see MaBako, a wing and three guards run a five out offense. Doesn’t have to be all the time. Of course it’s never going to happen. We’re going to dribble dribble dribble force it down low and more plodding dribble dribble dribble.

transition to what? looking for the best place to go stand

Personally I am just a little below "wishful thinking". Teams can change over the season but IU teams are consistent under Woodson. I see a lot of B1G teams that are going to give them trouble. This IU team is still not tough enough to win a close ballgame on the road in the B1G. I think they will find UCLA and Oregon to be a lot more athletic than B1G teams they have played in the past.

Let's see .. 18 teams in the B1G ... Based on what I have seen so far ... middle of the pack ... 9th or 10th in the B1G.

Like I said the other day, IU will get an upset win or two this year like always, win a few games in a row to get our hopes up and then lose 5 in a row to drive us insane. At the most they are a bubble team come March.

You forgot the stand, stand, stand and then hand it off to the player next to you drawing your defender to the ball. Teams will take away Reneau and Mgbako's 3 point shots, then what?

Defensively, our positioning and rotations are awful. Its better when Carlyle is in the game. But overall, its just really, really bad. Also our transition defense is really bad too. As much as I harp on our offense, I do think our defense and rebounding are the most glaring weaknesses. Louisville and Gonzaga made us look really, really bad defensively...with just a little bit of ball movement. Most teams that move the ball around even a little bit, have made Woodson coached defenses look bad.

Offensively, you can see glimmers of effectiveness. I think our biggest weakness now offensively is a complete lack of any sort of consistency with the types of things we're running. With the end result being that basically none of our players are ever comfortable or in rhythm. I do think within the various new things we're running, there is still way too much ISO type efforts. We definitely run sets and offenses that should be promoting more ball movement, but more often than not, after a couple passes, that movement dies. We're also still shooting a fair amount of very inefficient shots...like 19 foot jumpers off the dribble, 15 foot floaters, etc...

Fixing the defense and rebounding would consume nearly 100% of my practice time if I were Woody. If we were to get better getting stops and rebounding off those stops, it would allow us to get out in transition more...where we're fairly decent.
