Yeah, Nashville is lousy with musicians and writers. And they all know each other.
The lead guitar player for Richie Furay was a guy I'd never heard of, but he was great. We talked to him a little bit and he had his own band and recording contract.
You rented the whole place? I hate to think what that cost. It's not like they're hurting for business. Did you get it on an off night? I think they're only open Wed through Saturday nights?
It was a Tuesday night during a big IBM conference. We split it with another company that we were partnering with at the time. I don't remember the cost, but it was expensive.
They provided us with a 8 or 9 page list of groupings. They all looked like this below. I can't find the other 2, but we ended up mixing and matching people instead of using their suggested grouping.
SONGWRITER SUGGESTIONS – By Group:
GROUP 1:
Thom Schuyler:
Schuyler has received several of BMI’s esteemed Million-Air Awards for songs like I Fell In Love Again Last Night (Forrester Sisters) and Long Line of Love (Michael Martin Murphy) – and for his song Love Will Turn You Around he received multiple Million-Air Awards. ASCAP similarly honored Schuyler by presenting him with an ASCAP Most Performed Award for Hurricane (Levon Helm). He is also responsible for penning the official Music Row anthem 16th Avenue (Lacy J. Dalton). Schuyler has also had cuts by some of country’s brightest stars: Kenny Rogers (What I Did For Love), LeAnn Rimes (Satisfied) and Conway Twitty (Those Eyes).
J. Fred Knobloch:
Knobloch has had several cuts during his extensive, 20 year+ career in Music City, a couple of them reached the much coveted #1 status on the country charts: Why Not Me and Baby’s Got a New Baby. Those cuts that did not quite make it all the way to #1 got close: If My Heart Had Wings (Faith Hill), A Little More Love (Sawyer Brown), Meanwhile (George Strait), I Had It All (Ray Charles), A Little More Love (Kenny Rogers), A Lover Is Forever (Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Rosanne Cash) and many more! Knobloch is one of Nashville’s most consistently productive writers.
Tony Arata:
Tony Arata was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. In 1986, he and wife Jaymi moved to Nashville where his unique, soulful style began to get the attention of people like Allen Reynolds and Garth Brooks. Garth recorded seven of Tony's songs and "The Dance" won song of the year at The Academy of Country Music and received both a CMA and a Grammy nomination, as well as most-performed song in Radio and Records magazine. He has also had #1 records with "Here I Am" for Patty Loveless, "I'm Holding My Own" for Lee Roy Parnell and "Dreaming With My Eyes Open" for Clay Walker. Other artists who have recorded his songs include Trisha Yearwood, Emmylou Harris, Reba McEntire, Delbert McClinton and Hal Ketchum.
