Favorite Live Concerts?

Love Iron Maiden

When I was in high school, a bunch of my high school buddies had a band. They were allowed to play in the cafeteria after hours and practice. They always started off their practice playing "Wasted Years". We had football practice at 3:00 p.m. every day--we would walk through cafeteria to get to the practice fields and Wasted Years was a killer way to get jacked up before practice.
I went with a buddy from HS who was a huge Maiden fan and a couple of guys he'd deployed with who were fans. Alice Cooper opened and we were transported back to 1985 when Maiden came on stage. Freaking awesome and stupid smiles plastered on our faces the entire time.

I’ll throw in one more here, which was last week. Bonnie Raitt with Duke Levine on guitar last week at Merlefest. She was just outstanding, and the band was killer. She sounds as strong as ever, and i highly recommend seeing her in the near future.

Speaking of concerts, I saw where Lady Gaga drew an estimated 2.1 million to a free concert (how else could they do it?) at Copacabana in Rio de Janiero.

I’ve never heard of a concert with higher attendance than that - not in one place, anyway. But I looked it up and Rod Stewart once drew 3.5m to the same venue. Good heavens!

Second place? Jean-Michel Jarre, in Moscow. It was also free…probably because nobody with any taste would pay to see Jean-Michel Jarre (although I do remember being OK with Rendezvous 4…which he dedicated to astronaut and saxophonist Ron McNair, who died in the Challenger disaster and was a friend of Jarre’s).

Lady Gaga’s placed 5th all time.

Great list. Ryan adams is playing a tiny venue here this summer. Love Pete Yorn
Thanks man!

I almost saw Pete Yorn again this past fall. One of my best friends was visiting for a long weekend and Pete Yorn and the Lemonheads were playing the same place in Columbus on that Friday/Saturday. He didn't want to go to concerts on back to back nights, so we picked the Lemonheads - neither of us had seen them and both of us had seen Pete Yorn.

ZZ Top with Steve Miller Band, Eric Johnson, Extreme in San Jose State Stadium
Reo Speedwagon with .38 Special in Freedom Hall, Louisville KY
Oingo Boingo at the Waikiki Shell, Honolulu
John Mellencamp, Rupp Arena or Freedom Hall (not sure)

Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band in Yum Arena, Louisville
Eddie Money in Aloha Stadium
Billy Joel in Aloha Stadium
Dave Matthews Band at the Azura Amphitheatre, Honor Springs KS
Counting Crows with the Wall Flowers at the Azura Amphitheatre (Wall Flowers were best of the two bands)
The Barenaked Ladies, Value City Arena, Columbus OH

There were many more. I've seen ZZ Top four more times, REO three more times, Bruce three more, Barenaked Ladies three more times, Hootie and the Blowfish twice, Loverboy with The Hooters, The Stray Cats, ELO with Hall and Oats, Train three times, Guster three times, and many more. I'll have to compile a list and try to remember them in order.

How dreadful were the stray cats? Please don't tell me Adam Ant opened for them?

I have a bunch I really liked, but there is a number 1 with a bullet, Pink Floyd Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. Fantastic

2. Duran Duran in 2001. Incredible energy, so much nostalgia.
3. Eddie Money was great--1991 I think.
4. Bodeans--1992. Fun stuff. Outdoors
5. World Party, 10,000 maniacs in Cleveland.
6. Johnny Marr
7. Noel Gallagher
(note-i saw Marr and Gallagher later on in life-post turning 49. Would be ranked higher, but I no longer become aroused by stupid crunchy chicks with hair under their arms)
8. Chicago
9. Asia
10. The Connells

Worst concert ever--David Lee Roth. He's was a parody of himself, voice shot, stupid stage antics. Still lives in the late 70s and 80s. Embarrassing.
Great list! Haven't thought about World Party for a minute. And I love The Connells. Saw them do an amazing show at a small venue in Raleigh-Durham where I swear every person in the entire place knew every word to every song. It felt like they practically played Fun & Games front to back at one point.

1. Bob Mould on solo acoustic tour in a tiny venue in Chicago. I've never heard a single person with a single instrument fill up a room like that.
2. Prince at The Rio. Just unreal. A spiritual experience.
3. Robyn Hitchcock at Lounge Axe in Chicago - also solo acoustic. Such a unique performer.
4. REM with 10,000 Maniacs opening for them at some place in West Lafayette
5. Wu-Tang at Stubb's in Austin
6. The first Lolla.
7. Bruce Springsteen at the LA Sports Arena - 4 hours long and I think the last show ever before it was razed.
8. Peter Himmelman at The Alligator Lounge. When they shut the place down, he got in a pickup truck and drove down to the beach with a parade of cars in tow to continue the show.
9. Public Enemy with BDP and Doug E. Fresh making an appearance in Chicago
10. The Killers at The Hollywood Bowl. It's such an incredible venue to see a band in and The Killers filled it up.

Great post starter. So interesting to see everyone's favorites.

I don’t like Hootie and the blowfish’s music at all but they are super nice guys. I knew the drummer a bit. Was older. From camps and stuff. He played soccer at u of South Carolina.

Not an urban legend. That dude lived in Teter Whissler. The year before he broke his neck at the quarries. Jumped off the balcony during learning to fly.
What year was that? I remember that happening, but didn't know it was a Wissler guy.

I was an RA in Wissler and a couple years after after I left, a guy, Jerry Zook - a student manager on the BB team, whose pic was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, holding Isiah up to cut the nets - set a frat on fire and killed a guy. I think Jerry ended up doing 30 years or so in the big house.

I was RA there the yar Animal House came out, so you can imagine the shit that went on, with guys trying to live up to that movie.

For me it’s obviously Taylor swift. I’ll get my chance. But there’s a group out I wanted to see touring this year here or nearby and I probably won’t make any. My morning jacket. Morissey. Ryan adams. Oasis

Was never a huge REM fan, but saw them at Deer Creek and it was a great show. Never saw Prince or Talking Heads, but did see Petty and Pink Floyd.

I used to see a bunch of shows at Hara Arena in Dayton - my Army buddy was from Cincinnati. First saw Foreigner there in '78. Their opening act? AC/DC - very unknown at the time. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Quarry accident was the week before classes started in fall of 86. The Floyd incident was the following year. The guys he was with said he jumped.

Hara Arena was before my time here, but they had legendary concerts there.

I've rarely seen concerts that I think are 'bad'. 2 I can remember being disappointed were both at whatever Deer Creek is called now.

Doobie Brothers. Really looking forward to seeing them, but it turned into a sing-along. I want to hear the band play - not the crowd. They'd stop playing almost every song halfway through and the audience had to sing along. Ugh.

Donald Fagan. A couple years after I saw Steely Dan in Ft. Wayne - which I think was, musically, possibly the best concert I've ever been to - Fagan did a solo concert (possibly after that Doobie Brothers show) with out Walter, who had passed and, while OK, was a little too 'jazzy' for my tastes. Just disappointed after having see him (them) a couple years earlier.

I could write forever on this subject, but my most memorable ones were

= The Who in '73 (or early '74) in Dallas on the Quadrophenia tour

- Led Zeppelin earlier that summer at the old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco

- Jackson Browne on any tour, but the Running On Empty tour at IU was memorable (I've seen him probably 6 or 7 times)

- Clapton in Munich in '74 at the Olympiahalle, where he kept his back to the audience the whole time. lol I've seen him 4 times since, and those were great shows, but the Munich one was iffy, since he was in the throes of heroin addiction.

- Robert Cray at Deer Creek, opening for Clapton, was playing The Forecast Calls For Pain while a thunderstorm started and poured on us right after the song. Cosmic, man.

- Saw Procol Harum in Munich at the Circus Krone (kind of in the round) and also The Ike and Tina Turner Review also in Munich at another venue.

- Mark Knopfler at the Murat In Indy a few years ago was epic.

- Somehow I got 2nd row seats to Elvis Costello at the Murat and that was epic.

- Couple years ago I saw Richie Furay at a table next to the stage in Nashville, TN at some wine bar. Then saw him the next night at the Grand Old Opry. Also went to the Bluebird in Nashville - a great weekend.

I could go on and on. I've been going to concerts for 53 years, since my first 3 Dog Night concert in Indy at the Coliseum. Opening act was Miles Davis.

Chosen Few were always great as well. Pretty sure I lost my college girlfriend to Tommy Chang. If not physically, for sure mentally. Guess that’s why she wanted me to change my name to Tommy

Bluebird was great, saw Eric Church there.

I dont know. I dont like big shows. Been to Nashville a lot.

Aaron Tippin when I was a kid at North Daviess High School Gym.

Saw Montgomery Gentry and Kenny Chesney at Robert's Stadium.

Kevin Costner and Modern West at the Brown County Music Center in 2021. 5th row. Not a bad seat in the house.

Not exactly concerts but memorable music events

The Buddy Holly Story live on stage. The final scene was an abbreviated Clear Lake Iowa concert hours before the music died. The performers were great and I never saw the Buell performing arts venue so electrified. Fantastic.

Jesus Christ Super Star with the Colorado Symphony and great broadway vocals. Once again, the venue was rockin and rollin.

Saw Hot August Night performed in Denver. The walkoff-encore of that show made Diamond a smash on tour.

Village People. Great music most fun was watching the dudes in the audience.
