A man who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend's parents in 2001 (24 years!) chose to be executed by firing squad over lethal injection or electric chair. This will be the first execution by firing squad in 15 years. The article also contains a concise history of the use of firing squads for executions:

Sounds like a good start!

In a dissent about the use of lethal investigations, Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor seemed to favor the firing squad method when she wrote, “in addition to being near instant, death by shooting may also be comparatively painless.”

Both she and the guy choosing the firing squad are sadly mistaken when it comes to the painlessness of a gunshot wound but here's hoping no one enlightens them before the sentence is carried out...

I mean, it's a heart shot from a .308 round with 110 grain TAP Urban projectile specifically designed for max expansion on impact. Probably as quick of a death as could be expected. I reckon it could be quicker and less painless if the dude get domed at PB by a .50 BMG incendiary round, but surely more of a mess to clean up.

That's still gonna more than just sting a bit... I think his brain will hang on for a little awhile before he passes out... 110 grain seems a little lite for the job but I know zero about that particular round (the TAP urban projectile) so I'll defer to your expertise...)...

I love the .308 at 500 to 700 yards (I'm very familiar with it with iron sights) and even further out with a scope for a true Expert..., but I think I'd go "Old School" and choose some type of a .30-06 round to take someone down for the count in this scenario...

I'm sure they've researched the situation in depth though so that must be the best round for the yardage, etc...

Yeah, there is gonna be a bit of lag time I imagine. As for that round even as a firearms enthusiast I am not familiar with it. I had to look up the specs on that round (seemed light to me too considering bulk range ammo is about 40ish grains higher). Seems like a LEO urban tactical/marksman round designed for rapid expansion without over penetration. As far as standard ammo, .308 vs 30-06 (or even 7.62x54) is a potato/potahto/картофель comparison to me. Whatever differences there are likely aren't enough difference to make a difference in getting the job done in this application.
