Dusty May contract buy out number??

You don't think growing up 20 miles from Bloomington plays a role?

And then being a student manager under RMK for 4 years?

And then working as a coordinator of sorts under RMK and Davis for a couple years?

Obviously you could be right. And it is possible his experiences at IU, and being around for the end of the RMK tenure, could have disenfranchised him with IU??

But he has A LOT of IU ties... Is his family still living near Bloomington? Is he close with them?

"Coming home" can be a powerful thing. When "home" includes coaching at Indiana University...I could see it pulling someone like May from a good setup at Michigan.

Not to mention, Dusty's mom works as an usher at IU games.

don't know, but would have to assume they would
Why? Tons of folks are only interested in 1 sport, and shun others. Seems I heard a UT booster provides all Longhorn football players with a Lamborghini, and a Miami booster promised 50K to every Miami football player. Those are both football-first schools. I'd not assume they would also support bball at Michigan. If you gave a couple million a year to our bball program, the soccer or baseball teams could mark you down to pay for players too?

If circumstances were different, maybe. But, by all accounts, he's a stand-up guy, and I don't think a stand-up guy would leave for a competitor after one season ... and a good one at that.

If he were really fixated on coming to Indiana, he could have stayed in Boca and waited for Woody's inevitable dismissal. Michigan took him from FAU to the Big Leagues, and there's such a thing as loyalty.

That's how I read the situation. You read it differently.
I just re read the Indy Star article on May, from right before the Michigan game.

They've been somewhat of a "transient" family, to date. He left a couple of his early assistant coaching jobs after 1 season. Obviously very different from leaving a head coaching position, at a program like Michigan...but his history shows that he, and his family, are more than willing to pull up the stakes when he has a "better" opportunity.

There's also mention in that article about Southwest Indiana being "home" for he and his wife. But on the flip side, I get the sense...from the article, and from other accounts, that May's wife isn't nearly as fond of the Bloomington area as Dusty probably is.

In the end...who knows... If I'm making a prediction today...I think he'll be our next coach. But obviously you could be right with what you're saying, and/or if his wife does have strong feelings about not wanting to move "home"...that could determine it too.

As you've posted...if there aren't any reports of a new contract for him by NCAA tourney time... the odds of him being IU's next coach increase dramatically.

Winning can change that. I’m sure there are people now looking to put NIL to our football program now. I’m sure there are IU grads that were obsessed with IU basketball that never cared much about college football before last year. And, maybe, some of those people can slowly switch over,

Interesting side story. I got a text from a friend organizing a grad get together. All it said was for “IU versus IL” and who had been invited. This text came about a week before we played IL in bb, so I asked was the event for that game. The response was, no of course not, it was for the football game in September. Times change.

you don't see a difference in why football would be better supported immediately at IU vs, basketball at a football-first school like Michigan? Besides, we're talking about a single donor (responded to Kurt Cloverdales post), so while I'd agree, success by May will increase his NIL donations, I don't think it's safe to assume this one guy will immediately begin donating to UM's bball NIL. Football is the top dog, if any college's football team gets really good overnight, interest is going to mushroom. Basketball, especially at a football first school, will grow slower.

I don’t view it as an either / or.

If Mi goes to the FF, football will still be top dog, AND basketball NIL will increase. Michigan football NIL is monstrous, you could probably double BB and not make much of a dent in football (and that even assumes that the pie can’t get bigger).

That Miami booster also paid Isiah Wong and their little point guard from Indy whose name escapes me 6 figure deals to play basketball. Not an example that supports your argument...

Don't think it's the same booster. The gym owner I was talking about I think is named Dan Lambert, and the guy you're talking about is named Ruiz. Regardless whether 1 booster supports both, it's still quite valid that it's not a safe assumption that any individual NIL contributor for 1 sport, will automatically start supporting another sport, just because they're rich. Especially when the sport in question is basketball at a football-first school like UM.

Yep, you're right, my bad, I was mistaken.

I wish people would relax.... Dusty May signed a 10 year extension with FAU, and then a year later, went to Michigan. His extension could be for 20 years....it doesn't matter. What matters is his buyout. Dusty's buyout with his old UM contract was 5M, and now it's 7.5M. That's about half of Cronin, Oates, Buzz Williams, etc.

If we hire him in a year who coaches in the interim?

I agree mostly with what you are saying, but we need a coach in a month. The ink won’t even be dry on that contract.

Why would we need to wait a year? We could hire him at the end of the season and the buyout would still be 7.5M. It may be a bad look for Dusty, but the guy looks and sounds like an Eagle Scout, so I'm sure his reputation could handle it. In my opinion, it was a bad look to sign a 10-year extension and leave 1 year later too.

That said, I don't think he's coming.

I’m saying the difference in signing a contract and then jumping ship after 1 month is massively different than doing it after 1 year.

you don't sign a contract for a higher buyout and then leave the same year. You are making your new employer pay that much more. Makes no sense, he doesn't sign this if he's leaving for IU. They have already talked. It is over he is not our coach.

The only way it could make sense is if:

1. Dusty had not been contacted by IU yet.
2. By agreeing to a new, higher contract with UM, it would only increase a subsequent contract with a suitor.

But to your point, I agree, I don't think he's coming. IMO, Dusty chose UM over Louisville for a reason.

Right, and no chance IU has not talked with his agent if they have interest. Even IU isn't that stupid.

I have been telling you guys all along that Dusty was not coming to IU. He got a big time boost from UM out of the interest though so that’s great for him. He is not coming to IU.

Is anyone else a bit relieved?
No. I’m livid. That was our meal ticket, and farking Quinn Buckner stuck his gapped-tooth foot where it didn’t belong to make sure we kept Bigfoot one more year than we should have.

This program will never amount to anything again. And truth be told, because we have ineptness all through the athletic department and have for the better part of 30 years, we kind of deserve this fate.

Thank God this Dusty May nonsense is over. Loved his encore tonight at home after inking his new deal. Cream 2.0 right there.

One lesson learned: the IU media “insiders” aren’t really insiders. All of these pseudo-media guys claiming Dusty May would crawl across broken glass to come to IU🤣🤣🤣

The only inside info a guy like Fatjohns might have is the inside info on what is being served tomorrow at the Golden Corral buffet in Bedford.

Relax pal. Dusty would not have come to IU last year either, even if UM had not come calling.

Close to the situation. Not going any further than that.
Just saying no point in being “livid” about the situation with May and making derogatory remarks about those that kept Woodson too long. Yes, they kept him a year too long but that had no impact here.

Sure it did. More options last year including May at a lower buyout.
