Seem very similar. Hope he plays with half the heart of Walt. He can be very good Haven't had a big since Dean Garrett, that plays true post.

Re: What about DJ White or George Leach? nt

DJ White was actually more of a PF. Leach ,tall but not as talented as Bryant. Jeffries was a PF. Henderson was a PF. Lindemann was only center who was decent but not great. Nover had to really play out of position. Besides Garrett,Benson and Wright,I can't recall any true centers that were great at IU. Most were PF'S playing out of position.Ray Tolbert was great but small for a center. Who knows how Turner might have turned out if not for the wreck.

Yes, and that someone would be you

Uh, no (link)

I share your hopes, but Walt Bellamy was an absolutely dominating big man. Just look at his rebounding stats in my link. He still holds rebounding records at IU despite playing only three years.

Bryant hasn't played a game yet. High school games don't count. AAU games don't count. All-star games don't count. Youtube highlights don't count. So, no, he doesn't remind me of Walt Bellamy.

Walt Bellamy

Not yet....

An old Hoosier, who shall remain anonymous, once told me that if one were to blend Don Schlundt's mental approach and shooting ability with Bellamy's physical talent, you might have the best big man, basketball player who ever lived.

Dean Garrett, and better than George Leach....

as a senior. has similar body to Leach, but talents of Garrett. TB will be a great player at Indiana.

Re: Uh, no (link)

I was speaking of his physical makeup. If he plays half as good as I stated[if you read it],he will be great.Don't take my stuff out of context.

Re: Shouldn't Steve Downing be on your list ?

My bad. I told you I was old and forgetful too. Downing was one of my favorites besides Tolbert. Thanks for correction.

Re: Thomas Bryant is also a power forward. **

No he isn't. Even if Crean were to get Makur,he'd use Bryant in post.

You forgot two: Steve Downing and Uwe Blab

Downing was an All America and had some of IU's most important performances as a center. He had the 44 OT 26 RB performance against the UK twin towers (was it Phillips and Robey? I don't recall) and later played Bill Walton to a dead heat. Unfortunately, knee injuries ended his career. As for Blab, I think he is under-rated in the collective memory. He had a nice pro career - first in the NBA and later overseas.

Downing never played against Phillips and Robey

Downing graduated in 1973 and Robey and Phillips first played in the 1974-75 season.

I need to look up that game. I know UK played a double low post that season

and they called them "the twin towers" just as they later called Phillips and Robey.

too young to remember the game but it was in 1971

In the racist's last year at UK. The cheaters only had one player over 6-6 to play a significant role in the game, that was Jim Andrews.

If you click on the links of the players for UK, their pictures will come up. You may notice one thing about all of them. I'm sure the people of the Commonwealth found this an easy team to root for.

box score

We're it not for the tragedy, Landon Turner may have been in that group of great post players.

No.

Jim Andrews was the only guy who played in the post, as they basically ran a three guard offense. Two years earlier, Andrews and Tom Payne played significant minutes together. Maybe that's what you remember. Downing went against (and dominated) Andrews at Freedom Hall in '71.

I think Downing played vs Payne

Downing had graduated by '75,so he never played vs Phillips and Robey-that was Bennie.Downing would have played vs the pUKe team that IU beat in '73 enroute to the FF4,and the only UK center that I recall close to that time was Payne. And that's assuming it was before Payne mysteriously ended up charged with rape and IIRC getting a life sentence...

Re: I think Downing played vs Payne

Downing played against Payne in December of 1970 in IU's OT loss to UK in Bloomington.

Re: You forgot two: Steve Downing and Uwe Blab

Thank you for adding Blab. Mr.Hands of Stone did get better at IU. Downing played head to head against Walton. Iu almost won if supporting cast had supported.Didn't they smoke UCLA the next year though.

Re: He's basketball hall of fame lock material already, obviously*

Too bad you couldn't bring something positive to the discussion.Haters hate I guess.

On over half of the sites he is listed as a power forward,

So let's say 50/50 with a lean towards PF.

Re: On over half of the sites he is listed as a power forward,

In an interview, Bryant described himself as a 5 who can also play the 4. First time Crean has had such a player at IU. We've had 4's who necessarily played the 5, but this is a post player use to playing the post. I'm not counting the one semester that Fischer was at IU.

I did not see Walt Bellamy at IU

But Wat Bellamy was a great plAyer so if Bryant is in his company then he will be a great player at IU!

Hoetzel remind you of Bird, JBJ of MJ, Troy W of Dominique?

your comparison is ridiculous for a player who may or may not even be a decent college player.

Never mind that there are not a lot of over-60 year olds posting here, and to have seen Bels play at IU, that's what you'd be.

Holt- gee, he reminds you of Unseld....

Resembles DJ White to me.

His game reminds me a lot of DJ White when he came back from his injuries and was one of the better players in the B1G in 2005-2007. He's not an explosive athlete, but he's got good feet and hands like DJ. He's got a promising jump shot that should get better at IU, like DJ did. He appears to be a good shotblocker with a huge wingspan, like DJ. The only difference to me is that Thomas a bit taller, maybe an inch or two over DJ, and he's got a longer wing span, but their games to me are very similar.
