Daryl Thomas

One my fond memories of DT was his throwing the ball inbounds against Iowa nearly right thru Brad Lohaus's head.

Iowa's coach,Tom Davis, had an inbounds pressure technique where he put a 7 footer tight on the guy inbounding the ball which frequently resulted in a steal or a turnover.

Knight evidently told Daryl he had enough of that .... and to throw it at the guys head next time it happened. Brought tears to my eyes watching it... (both in sympathy for what Lohaus was feeling and the fact that it was both predictable and humorous that it had happened).

Needless to say, the guy guarding the inbounds pass, from that point on, spent quite a bit more time worrying about taking a basketball to the snout :D then he did forcing a turnover (of course the Iowans hated us for it;))...

You're confusing mis-speaking with not remembering. Everyone remembers "The Shot" - was in my second and final year on Campus at the time after playing against some of the Team at HPER several times the summer before.

They were pretty good. :D

I look back on that team and they all over achieved a National champ and not one NBA player
Dean Garret had a very good NBA career after playing overseas. And then Smart, Alford and Calloway. You don't win a national championship without talent. But this thread is about all-Big 10 captain Daryl Thomas who was a leader on and off the court.

The last couple of days I have went back and watched the 1987 tournament run and DT was just a great player. He had such great post moves and when he got the ball inside he was going to score or get fouled.

Keith Smart played several years in the NBA. Ricky Calloway played 1 year.

According to sports-reference.com....

Smart played 12 minutes in the NBA scoring 2 points... Earnings? (1 season)
Calloway played 678 minutes, scored 205 points... Earnings 125K (1 season)
Alford played 1641 minutes, scored 744 points... Earnings 500K (4 seasons)
Garrett played 6969 minutes, scored 1737 points...Earnings 13Mil (6 seasons)

Alford started in 6 NBA games and Garrett started 210 times. Something I had not realized is that Garrett didn't play his first NBA season until 1996-97.

Alford was drafted 26th, Garrett 38th, Smart 41st, Calloway undrafted

That was a fun team to watch and I always rooted for DT because everyone knew Knight rode him hard...
