Damezi Ready for a Breakout?

Interesting comment from Jmo that I've heard others say as well.

There is not doubt he can score and has shown he can shoot before he came to IU. He needs to be more than just a 3 point shooter. As Archie said, if you aren't a threat off the dribble, defenses are going to guard you close on the perimeter. I'm not sure I remember him scoring on a drive or using the dribble to get an open look.

I expect his skills and knowledge to improve next year. Whatever improvements made in the gym have to come out when the lights come on and the people are in the stands. That experience can only come when the season starts and you build confidence that what you do in practice can be done in a game.

Given that he’s probably working hard with the coaches on it, I think his shooting form should be greatly improved this upcoming season. His shot was inconsistent and flat a good deal of the time. My bigger concern is his apparent lack of athleticism. On D he appeared to lack the foot speed to guard wings let alone shooting guards. He seemed helpless at times guarding guys on the perimeter. Hopefully it was just a matter of getting the gawkieness out of his system the first year. If not, he won’t be a lot better.

foot speed. lol. almost as ridiculous as eye discipline

I hope it's a breakout year, but based on what I saw in games this past season it would require a big leap this off season. Shooting aside, there were times when he wasn't just out of place, but looked completely lost on the floor.

He's more floor ready than Clifton Moore ever thought of.
That said...I'm more of he could play in relief of someone..

Damezi is more of a 3 than a 2, but I believe he has the flexibility to play either. I saw Damezi block shots at the rim in HS, rebound and lead the fast break coast to coast. Yes, a Soph. Damezi should be much further along than C. Morre was was a Soph. Damezi could also post up smaller guards if he plays the 2 and over power them.

lol...........................did you see Damezi post up 1 player last year? Over-power anyone? His game, such as it is, is to stand 23 feet from the basket and bomb away.

Your sample size of watching him in college is too small to make that claim. You need to include his entire body of work.

If that's the measure you're using then, then Priller should have been a big contributor in his sophomore year based on what he did at Richland HS.

I never saw Priller in HS I doubt he was being scouted as a D1 player, I saw Damezi in HS in Indiana multiple D1 schools were recruiting South Bend's All-Time leading scorer including Purdue. Priller and Anderson are not an apples to apples comparison.

My point is that HS performance isn't a guarantee of performance at the next level, nor do skills always translate to the next level.

Just because anderson had a good HS career does not automatically guarantee he is going to do well in college. Delray Brooks was a top five player coming out of hs and was a bust at IU.

You are correct.
I saw Delray in HS at Michigan City.

You are correct.
But until they have more PT you have to combine their college and HS into a total body of work to evaluate. Excluding either is not a fair assessment.

I heard all he did was take smaller guards to the hole. He could drive on them but the guy was not fast and could not shoot? And knight never watched him enough to figure that out.

Small sample size.
You are correct from what you saw.
Since Ive watched him for more than 1 year, I believe he has the potential to do more.

Delray Brooks made perimeter shots and had 43 points in a state tournament game that I watched. Indiana Co-Mr. BB with Troy Lewis of Anderson.

ThenI do not know what the problem was at IU. I was too young then to remember anything.

He just did not have confidence under RMK and did not play well He transferred and played much better at Big East Providence.

For being not slow and not able to shoot, how in the world did he manage to shoot 42% from 3 and 81% at the line for a Final 4 team?

He was vastly overrated and could not score from the perimeter. He was overmatched as soon as he arrived in Bloomington.

Correct, this was a mismatch with Knight and whomever recruited him missed badly. Solid player.
