Cutting degree programs at IU

Hope the philosophy dept isn’t going to get axed:

“President-elect of the Bloomington Faculty Council Heather Akou said she hasn’t heard anything from the university but that it’s “aggressively” moving to get in line with the law.”

Ideal time to get an instant degree. Anything stopping the university from conferring “honorary” degrees?

By what parameters are they choosing which ones to cut?
One of the laws requires public colleges and universities to eliminate programs with low numbers of degrees averaged over a three-year period.
The cutoff is 15 graduates for a bachelor’s degree, seven for a master’s and three for a doctorate.

Based on federal data from 2023, around 200 BA, MA and PhD programs at IU Bloomington fell short. WFIU/WTIU News does not have data for degrees conferred in the two years since and IU has not commented on programs at risk.

So far, most faculty don’t know what to expect. President-elect of the Bloomington Faculty Council Heather Akou said she hasn’t heard anything from the university but that it’s “aggressively” moving to get in line with the law.

“There are going to be big changes for this university, and the pace at which this is being pushed through is not designed for positive outcomes,” she said. “I have to say that my faculty colleagues are in panic to a degree that I have never seen before.”

Most of the degrees with low numbers of recipients are in the humanities and languages. Jewish Studies, Classical Studies and multiple language departments could lose their main offerings.

From 2020 to 2022, IU Bloomington conferred more humanities doctorates than any other university in the country, according to data from Carnegie Classifications. It also ranks first for number of languages taught, for now.

New STEM programs in areas deemed critical to the state also failed to reach the threshold in 2022-23. Those included artificial intelligence, microbiology and cyber operations and warfare.

How fooking stupid is the legislature?

Last week I struck up a conversation with this brown guy at my minion’s playground. I always approach them hoping they’re pakis but they’re always Indians.

This guy was telling me his funding was cut and couldn’t find any other post docs in the U.S. for his area of research as they were all in the same boat so he was heading back to India to take a teaching job he didn’t want

His area of research was something about AI and cancer treatment. Probably not a great area to cut funding

Why didn't you offer him a job?
I’m terribly sorry to hear that. I know you are on your 37th post doc at Wash u and don’t want to go back to India but I might have a proposition that will interest you. Ever done assembly? Ever sew? Run a waterjet? We can always use third shift guys at our facility in Pakistan. Pays roughly a $1.50 an hour so you will have to tighten your belt a little in time but it is honest work. Not this grift you’ve been running over at the medical campus

After he told you that, did you look him in the eye and say, "Well, the world needs ditch diggers too." Then turn to the minion, "Spalding! Time to go."

Ok Dr. so you have my number. Once you get over there ask for Ken stein.

Ken Stein?

It’s a made up name he uses to trick Americans.

What’s his real name.

I don’t know.

How long has he worked for you.

Almost a decade. Anyway. So he’s your boss. And don’t bring up education shit. He started in a factory at 8. They made homemade bombs and harvested organs. He doesn’t give a fck up about wash u or your hiding out post docs. Good luck.

P.s. if we’re funding a terror cell I don’t want to know. Keep it to yourself

Well, we are a football school now. I mean, how many football players are studying Russian?

Do you use FB to advertise? I am a sucker for some of those items they sell. I just got a credit card like thing that goes in your wallet and tracks it, like the Apple tracker. But it looks exactly like a credit card.

Then I ordered some small, very thin, electric screwdriver and different drivers. Just loooked cool.

These things are always like $20 to $30 and I can just push the buy button - CC already in there. Easy peasy.

Whoever are selling these things have to be making a mint. Can you imagine how many other suckers are out there, thinking 'what the hell, I'll buy it for that much'. My wife is always wondering why I'm geting these small packages in the mail.

I am as usually skeptical of these things, but something about the ease of ordering and the coolness of some of the products get me. If I don't like them, I give them as Christmas gifts to our family's Christmas exchange.
