Gabe isn't small...he's pushing 6-3.
Newton was pretty overhyped as well for a guy who will probably never see a college floor.MAC quality guard IF he learns to shoot. Can't imagine a more hyped kid coming here and getting (1) thrown to the wolves waaaaay before he was ready and (2) getting completely nailed to the bench prior to his mystery injury. Odd career.
I present you one Kristen Lander!MAC quality guard IF he learns to shoot. Can't imagine a more hyped kid coming here and getting (1) thrown to the wolves waaaaay before he was ready and (2) getting completely nailed to the bench prior to his mystery injury. Odd career.
Maybe...if that coach and program fits Gabe.Dayton,
Always struck me as a smart player with good energy. Sorry for him that he didn't get good coaching here. Wish him the best if he stays with our new coach or wherever he ends up.I would assume every single one of our current guys with eligibility will enter the portal. Doesn't mean all of them will leave. Gabe's dad has extensive connections. If he leaves IU, he'll land somewhere good, I'm sure.
He will be a good college guard if he ends up playing for a good college coach. Assuming he and his dad will make sure that's what happens this time.Always struck me as a smart player with good energy. Sorry for him that he didn't get good coaching here. Yep probably would do great at a place like Wisconsin. He will be a good college guard if he ends up playing for a good college coach. Assuming he and his dad will make sure that's what happens this time.
Maybe... I think they've had some pretty good offensive oriented guards though, that have driven their good teams. Hepburn and Trice come to mind.Yep probably would do great at a place like Wisconsin.
He was a disruptive defender, that occasionally got bullied to the basket. One thing that IU's lead defenders guarding the ball have to contend with, however, that well coached defenses would help immensely with, is their lack of impactful help defense.Cupps always appeared to me to be a defensive liability. Got taken to the hoop more than Goode -- if that's possible
IU needs a coach that builds confidence. Thats a big piece of how the good coaches always win.He will be a good college guard if he ends up playing for a good college coach. Assuming he and his dad will make sure that's what happens this time.
Mystery injury? Where do you get that? He had knee surgery for a meniscus.MAC quality guard IF he learns to shoot. will end up at DaytonMaybe...if that coach and program fits Gabe.
Gabe's dad is known, and has contacts, all over the country. Gabe will end up wherever they think is the best fit for him. Might end up still being IU.
I think Cupps might do very well with B. McCollum.
Cupps will do ok at a mid-major. No P4 coach is going to raise his ceiling.I think Cupps might do very well with B. McCollum.
Yes, a lot of P4 coaches would markedly raise his ceiling.Cupps will do ok at a mid-major. No P4 coach is going to raise his ceiling.
Nope, if you can’t see his physical limitations compared to top guards then I don’t know what to say. He’s simply limited, not his fault, just reality. Cupps was a good hs player, sometimes that doesn’t transfer to a power conference.Yes, a lot of P4 coaches would markedly raise his ceiling.
Against some guards, he is...or at least he was his freshman year. In a better system, that has reliable help principles, his disruptiveness and deceptive length and athleticism, would show again, what he regularly showed in AAU...he's more than capable of running an elite level team. All you've seen is what he looked like last year in an awful overall system...and one that's even worse for him.Nope, if you can’t see his physical limitations compared to top guards then I don’t know what to say. Hate to see Cupps go, he brought respect and enthusiasm to the team. Thanks Gabe.
Remember on his jump shot how he would drift to his left instead of going straight up? He needs to get that fixed either at IU or someplace else. Seems like a good kid though and I wish him the best. The same can be said about Newton. His body just let him down, but he always seemed to have a good attitude.Maybe... I see Gabe thriving in a more aggressive, physical, up tempo environment. He's a lot faster and quicker than Woodson's system ever really was able to showcase. But he's not a great overall shooter. He's a very active defender, he rebounds well from the PG position, and he's really good getting the ball up the floor quickly in transition. He'd be a good guard for Mick Cronin, I bet. On the right Kansas team, Self's system would suit him as well. Obviously if he wants to be more of a focal point, mid/low major probably has a ton of options for him as well.
