ESPN Insider has an article about 10 coaches on the hot seat. Matt Painter is on the list now and Tom Crean has moved into the category of Off the list. I posted the link but it does require an ESPN Insider sub.

I'm amazed that UT coach Barnes is not on the list. I am a transplanted Hoosier living in Austin and attend a lot of their games. Their offensive system is just horrible and has been forever. Lot's of standing around. They have a new AD that used to run the Rockets so basketball is important to him. I expect if they continue to disappoint this season, he likely will be gone.

Coaches on the hot seat

Has to be disappointing news for some,..... some of the same who were liking Barnes for IU a few years back.

We as fans will decide if and when Tom Crean is off the hot seat

joking aside, he's done a decent job this year except for a few games like sundays game at OSU... Didn't feel like he made any adjustments to them stopping our drive.

If he loses to PU he will definitely be back on the seat IMO.

Thread jack... How do you like Austin?

Where are you from originally?

Re: We as fans will decide if and when Tom Crean is off the hot seat

Crean is safe as long as we protect the home floor the rest of the year. Any road wins would be a plus. Think where this team was in the minds of many preseason versus where they are now.

Winning on the road in the Big-10 is a tough hurdle to overcome for most teams. One thing I would change would be not allowing referees to camp out in front of a team bench, especially the home bench. Anyone notice how much conversation was going on at OSU between their coach and one of the referees, .....most every time down the floor.

One is being simple to think it doesn't make a difference,.... coaches wouldn't waste their time if they thought it was a poor investment of such.

Re: Thread jack... How do you like Austin?

From Evansville.

Been in Texas since early 80's and Austin the last 8. I don't ever want to leave Austin. Very well could be the best place in US to live if you can handle the summer heat.

I distinctly remember you being in "that" same group before

the season started. Let's knock off the this side/that side stuff...especially when you've just recently switched camps.

After all the off court stuff

yes I thought there should have been a change but the AD kept him so I am still backing him as long as he is here.

Re: I distinctly remember you being in "that" same group before

It's a guess but I think it might have been DWS

What's really funny is Crean never was on the hot seat. A lot of people wanted him to be and a couple journalist said he should be but the reality is he never was. There was never a better replacement out there so until that time comes, Crean is safe and sound. We can discuss it all we want but I assure you, he wasn't ever going anywhere at the end of this season.

Right now he's off it but he could be back on it this year

All depends on how the last 11 games and the B1G tourney goes.

Re: Right now he's off it but he could be back on it this year

This...the season is not over. If he finishes strong no reason to believe he wont be back but if we fizzle down the stretch the heat will be on.

Re: Right now he's off it but he could be back on it this year

If we make the tourney which is likely he's probably back for another given the buyout. If we somehow missed the tourney I don't see how they'd bring him back. Sooner or later he's going to have to make a nice tourney run or he's out.

I hope so. With the exception of a couple of games, I've enjoyed watching the team play this year. Team has performed above expectations and CTC deserves some credit for that. Obviously a lot of basketball left to play so will see what happens. I, for one, am not real excited about starting over again with another coach....starting to feel like the football program changing coaches every five years or so...

You guys act as if the season is already over. Do I want us to lose. Of course not but in crean fizzles out as he has in the past he is right back on the hot seat.

Not after Glass's interview

Based on Fred Glass's interview on the front page today ... CTC has nothing to worry about.

Don't miss my write up on the PUkes today: http://bit.ly/1BuMbvu

That interview...

...gives me zero hope that we'll ever be an elite program under Fred Glass' leadership.

Re: That interview...

Just think, that is 1 of 5 parts of the interview published in the next few days.

Was never on hot seat per Fred Glass

Based on the interview on the front page today, plus other interviews this year ... Tom Crean has never been on the hot seat, and won't be, even if IU does not make the NCAA's this year.

Re: Was never on hot seat per Fred Glass

That may be what he is saying but alumni and boosters will be breathing down Glass's neck if that is true. No way we can have 7 seasons under Crean and only have 2 NCAA appearances and not be on the hot seat(plus the off court issues this past year)

Reading that interview...

...you'd think CTC is love child of John Wooden and Coach K. Glass has clearly hitched his wagon to Crean. Hope it works out for him.

Every successful program...

...at some point started over with a new coach and staff. That's how it's done.

Agreed on everything you said here

Yes, including your joke about us fans making the hot seat decision :)

He's done well this year, and I'm not bent out of shape about losing at Ohio State (though agree with your adjustments comment).

However, I agree that losing to Purdue changes things. 5-3 with 2 straight losses, including one at freaking Purdue, would mean the heat will be cranked up. That may not be 100% fair since IU has never consistently been good at Mackey, even going back to RMK's later days, but a loss to them will not be taken well by most long-time fans and would degrade the "feel good" story that this team has been so far.

Let's hope for the W and 6-2.

Re: Every successful program...

Not really....the very successful programs have the same head coach for a long period of time. Not saying CTC is that guy but seven years is not the end all target date. Fred Glass will decide what is the right course at year end given the entire body of work on and off the court.

Visiting Austin over spring break. Heard Austin is growing fast.

Staying in BnB near SoCo and the Continental Club. Checking out San Antonio and the coast too.

I'm from E'ville, too.

Good choice...Austin....from what I hear.

Yeah, but at some point...

...they arrived as a result of change. A steady course isn't always the best course. A steady course didn't get Williams to UNC or Calipari to UK. And a steady course won't get he who can't be mentioned to IU.

I agree that Fred Glass will decide. In fact, I'd suggest that the decision is already made. Steady as she goes.

Did anyone ask if Fred is on the hot seat? He might give

Crean another extension on his way out.

Re: Was never on hot seat per Fred Glass

To repeat what I said before, Crean wasn't, isn't and won't be on the hot seat unless something way more serious than a bad finish to the season happens. Even the notion that a loss at PU would suddenly "make the seat hotter" is an absolute joke. IU could lose every game for the rest of the season and Tom would be back next year. Guaranteed.

I think if we make the tourney, he'll definitely be back next year with the

possible exception of more behavior/legal problems, or something of that nature. Despite my, and many other concerns, about roster mgt, "small ball" etc... frankly I think he has earned another year if we make the tourney.

Re: Was never on hot seat per Fred Glass

Is our current admin not really concerned with winning? Could you imagine the IU fan base if IU lost the rest of the game this year?

Re: Yeah, but at some point...

Right ... well nothing last forever. Change for change sake isn't always the best course as well. Grass is not necessarily greener. We'll see what Mr. Glass decides....

Re: Don't we start over every year with 4-5 new players each year**

New coach and staff with new system plus recruiting...that isn't something we deal with every year.

Re: Don't we start over every year with 4-5 new players each year**

What is glass suppose to say. Of course he supports him as he gave him the massive contract. If we really would lose every game and glass still kept him then we no how serious he is about winning.
