Cooper Flagg

Sucker punch.. good?
It was a very strong punch but.I don’t know the details. I thought it came when they were facing each other so maybe unexpected but not a sucker punch. I don’t remember Jabbar ever punching someone except for this case.

3 yrs. Frosh couldn't play 'varsity' back then.

Pistol was on the LSU frosh team, which played before the 'varsity' team (just like HS ball..at least how it used to be?). Pistol would pack the stadium full for the frosh game, as people came to watch him light it up. After their game, and the 'real' LSU team came on the court to play, half the stadium would leave.

A few yrs ago during a Christmas family gathering, the subject was "what sports record" will never be touched.
I offered up Cy Young's 511 wins as untouchable. Then I stopped and mentioned that no one is ever going to get within 20 pts of Pete's career scoring average. All without a shot clock or 3 point line.
When I was in High School, our team got tickets to see the old Milwaukee Classic which was one of those old Holiday Tournaments. Wisconsin and Marquette were the "Home Teams" for the Tournament. This was 1968, and Florida State and LSU with Maravich were the two visiting teams. When We were there Saturday, the teams and Coaches put on a clinic in the afternoon. Maravich came out and showed Us his ball handling drills. He was amazing. LSU and Florida State played in the Consolation Game Saturday night. Florida State won the game something like 126-85. Maravich had his usual great game, but neither He nor his teammates could play Defense. This was before the 3 point line. Dave Cowens was on that FSU team and caused a lot of matchup problems for LSU.

You were lucky to see it. Someone mentioned watching video of Maravich at LSU but I have searched several times and can’t find any.

Maravich had the advantage of playing for his father on some less than great teams, and the team from the beginning was totally built for Pete. I don’t think LSU ever qualified for the NCAA tournament while he was there.

Plus Jesus could play basketball on Jupiter or at the bottom of the ocean.

This is ridiculous, 😀 but I sat in mass one morning looking at the statuary in front of me, remembering the shroud of Turin forensics and spent an hour determining that Jesus was a lefty Jerry West. A big, combo guard, with Elite leadership skills and money in the clutch.

All speculation, of course. We can debate the best shooter, best ball handler, best floor general, etc....As for Pistol Pete? He was the best ____________you fill in the blanks. He was an amazing trail blazer and showman.....not to mention a scoring machine.

Senior year-
Maravich 44,.5 ppg and 45%
Mount 35.4 ppg and 49%

Is the best college basketball player I’ve ever seen. I’m almost 47…I remember back to the mid 80s… for reference sake.

Durant, Michael Beasley, Carmelo, Oden…better than all of them.
I saw Jordan, Bird, and Magic. They were pretty good.

In my opinion the only 3 players that should've ever went straight out of high school to the league are Wilt, Oscar, and LeBron. Everyone else could've used atleast one year of maturation, be it physical or emotional. Sabonis Sr. would've been fine at 18 as well.
I think Magic could’ve gone straight to the nba and thrived right away. He was already 6’9” and had all the tools as a freshman.

Moses went straight from high school to the ABA. There is no way he could have tolerated college.

If you put Flagg on the 08' K State team I wonder what his number would be and would they do better than a second round loss? He's had the luxury of different life experiences than Beasley so he'll be a better player, but on sheer talent, Beasley was superior as a freshman.

Cooper Flagg is one of the best "young" talents! He was only 17 when he started school at Duke and turned 18 in December. It is always tough to compare players in any sport from different eras (EX: Michael vs LeBron). He is so cerebral playing the game and his talents are crazy good for a player his age. Hopefully he stays healthy throughout his NBA career.

No, please not a lefty.

When Larry Bird's name comes up as a guy that people a little older than me use as someone better than Flagg... I know I'm probably on to something.

VanHorn...bro? What? Again... VERY good college player, played both inside and a little around the perimeter...but was not a 6-9 Guard/Wing/Post hybrid like Flagg...and like Bird was...
He shot more 3s his senior year than Flagg will shoot this year--took 150 of them and shot a better % from 2, 3, and FT.

While not a guard, he did have some perimeter skills.

Dawkins was the first I believe and can’t imagine he could have tolerated college. Then there was Bill Willoughby that had a 47” vertical but he didn’t have much of a career.

How was Jordan held back by Smith and if so, he was still one the best college player ever. In in those days bigs went first no matter the talent comparison if close.. Not that Hakeem and Bowie were not good. Even Brad Daugherty went before Bias.

I think Kobe and Kevin Garnett would not have benefitted much from college. They did just fine going straight to the NBA. Kobe was a bit of a punk early on but college wasn't fixing that.

I’m not sure what you are meaning. He was”held back” by Smith by the way he was played. Not saying Smith was wrong to do it that way. It almost seems like you are saying the NBA knew how good Jordan would be but big men were just more important than that.

Meh...I dunno. Best freshman? Ok. But best period? I dunno about that one.

My only point was that Jordan being a generational talent was hidden to some degree by UNCs talent and the way Smith played him. I didn’t think this was a rare take.

Jesus could make shots from around the world. Now the reason why I brought Him up was because someone else did. I was saying that Jesus is superior. And of course since He is the Son of God clothed in Flesh then He would be. I've never seen Jerry West walk on water. Even the Flash can't walk on water. He has to run at super speed.

Nobody can know how good a player will be but Jordan was the best player in college that year and yes bigs were prioritized in those days within reason. Doesn't mean that Uwe Blab would be picked before Jordan in the same draft. As mentioned Bowie and Hakeem were good. Hakeem a HOFer and Bowie was just oft injured. I think even today bigs will still be prioritized some. Ayton over Luka? Oden over Durant? Probably more. I guess the real point is where they go in the draft has little to do with who was the best all time college player discussion.

That’s not inconsistent with ANY of my posts.

You remember that old joke, Who is the only Person to consistently hold Jordan to less than 20 points per game? Answer: UNC Coach Dean Smith. Remember Jordan played before the shot clock in College Basketball and if UNC had a lead in the last 8 minutes of a game They ran their 4 Corner Offense and often took 3 minutes off the clock per possession. In some cases They didn't have any field goal attempts in that time frame, and lived at the free throw line. Those factors kept Jordan's scoring average down.
