Conwell to Louisville?

the farce that we have more money than everyone else is being exposed.
I’m guessing that based on the comments of Coach DeFries about the players he is looking for, the $ IU has available is not going to be the top thing discussed to these kids.. been there, done that last year.
If we want more of that, then we are a sad group

1st year might have to overpay a bit to build a roster, only so much talent out there and its getting picked over quickly. may Kelsey and pope set the bar high. now you have the sec flush with monied schools in the game. Devries needs to start obtaining some talent.

It's about fits not money. I said i didn't like the fact he has been to 4 diffrent schools in 4 years. Seems like a me guy to have a really good year and not want to follow Sean Miller or come home to Indiana from Indianapolis just shows you he is a me type please DeVries stay far away.

Yup. The players from very modest backgrounds that have an interest in compensation are below our moral high ground. They are bag chasers. How dare they consider their future and the conditions of their family and not turn down the money and play for free. We only need players from the middle class and the upper class that do not have the concerns for money and just want to try and play D1 basketball as best they can. No poor players!

I do agree that there are players you don’t want with low NIL expectations and there are players you don’t want with high NIL expectations (MM and Carlyle for example) but can’t fault in demand players only because they have high NIL expectations. Good for them.

A lot of speculation by UK fans that Smith will be there next season and Pope has the armored money trucks full and ready to roll to make it happen. Jeez, even though a PU player I would like to see him at IU rather than U effin K. If he played for any other team I can’t imagine anyone would be seriously opposed to having him.

This is a dumb take. Last year IU got drilled by signing the bag chasers. It’s fine to go out and grab guys but don’t over pay for someone who hasn’t won anything. I’m guessing Smith stays at PU but only because he will give PU the home town discount. Difference is he has earned that money from PU over someone like Ballou who IU over paid for 6 months of work.

I disagree, they selected the wrong players that had high NIL market value based on reputation. Cooper Flagg got a boatload of NIL commitments before he signed, was that bad for Duke. It is more a matter of separating the wheat from the chaff no matter the NIL. If you really want a player, as Duke wanted Flagg, then you pay market value or more. If you recruit on reputation and blindly pursue players based on reputation and high market value then you are likely screwed as IU was screwed.

Was Ace and Harper worth it for Rutgers?

For some reason I can’t open your link but on3 had him ranked ninth highest in Div1 bball. You determine if overpaid after performance. The same if high NIL or low NIL. He was not overpaid nor was Flagg based on performance after the NIL fact.

This year in F4-
Cryer and Uzan high profile transfers for UH
Mazarin, Broome, Jones, and Kelly for Auburn
I don’t believe Duke has any transfers with solid performance and Gillis best of them.
Clayton, Martin, and Richard only portal players that contribute for Florida

9 of the 20 starters in the final 4 were 4 stars are higher. Duke has 4 of the 9.
Also those portal guys you listed are multi year guys for those programs.

I don’t see the point but Uzan, Kelly, and Martin are first year.

We agree that there is considerable poor value among high NIL players. We differ in that I believe there may be a good value among high NIL players and I expect a good coach with good scouting to be able to discern good value from poor value no matter a players position on the NIL scale. Sometimes their reputation is deserved and sometimes not.

I’m not a fan of a guy that been to 2-3 schools. Conwell will be at his 4th school. Get some less known guys and build a roster. Don’t over pay for 1 year money chasers

Little different scenario wouldn’t you say?
Not getting Conwell was a miss for IU. I’m not in panic mode yet, but we don’t need to justify missing on him with this bag chaser BS. He’s a 16 ppg scorer, shoots over 40% from 3, and can get his own shot. He earned a bag. And we knew he wanted a bag when we brought him on campus for a visit. He left without committing and visited Louisville and committed to them the next day. We missed. Devries doesn’t get a pass because he’s new.

We missed or passed. No one knows which it is.

I tend to think we missed but after meeting and talking with him maybe CDD decided to pass.
Maybe he didn't think he would be "fit" on his team. I believe he emphasizes that aspect.

I thought IU had a huge NIL budget to get the best transfers? Or maybe recruits don’t want to commit to a team with no players and an unproven head coach.

Anyone expecting a big year one turnaround is in for disappointment. This program has been mismanaged to the point of near death.
Anyone expecting you to be anything but an asshole is in for a disappointment.

I think this is probably the best take on it. We need multiple players "like" Conwell. Obviously Conwell, himself, wasn't crucial. But losing out on him, however it happened, hurts on the surface because he's the exact type of player we need to start building IU basketball with...in my opinion. But none of us know if Conwell, himself, had the right kind of personality to fit with DeVries and what he wants to build.

When Cig came over, he brought a lot of guys with them. Why is that not the case here? Got to be hard to get the first few guys to sign up for a team, when they have no idea who else will be on the team. Was it short sighted to run off all of Woody's guys?

The optimistic take... Per one of DeVries pressers, he's going to be very selective, meticulous even, in selecting his first roster at IU. He talked about how important it is getting it right "up front"... reading in to that... probably a glimpse that he isn't going to "chase high dollar talent", just because he has the money to do so. So right now, he's in the process of evaluating, reaching out, setting up visits, etc... with the types of kids he "thinks" he wants at IU. And then when they visit, he'll make that final determination at the same time those kids are making theirs on IU.

The pessimistic take... DeVries just said those things in his presser as a potential excuse for what he knows is going to be a very difficult task. He's reached out to guys like Freeman, Conwell, Dix, and a number of others, and he's been unable to sell his vision for what IU basketball will be. AND he's uncomfortable big game fishing out on the big open waters, like he is now at IU.

I think the optimistic take is probably "more true" right now. But I'm sure there are going to be some learning curve elements for DeVries, and that will cause him to miss on a kid or two here and there.

I believe that rumor was an April Fools joke.
