Trump’s Longtime Lawyer Says He Paid Stormy Daniels Out of His Own Pocket

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/13/...latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=sectionfront

Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, said on Tuesday that he paid $130,000 out of his own pocket to a pornographic-film actress who had once claimed to have had an affair with Mr. Trump.

“Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly,” Mr. Cohen said in a statement to The New York Times. “The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.”

That's one HELL of a dedicated lawyer!

So they are admitting that this happened and that they paid her off. Wow.

Apparently the Daniels/Trump relationship was what they call a three way as the one that really got screwed was the lawyer.

Your client really got the short straw.
Nah, the "actress" really got the "short straw", however, she should get some type of golden porn award for acting like she was enjoying that encounter. I can only imagine the revulsion, even for a porn actress, but I am sure it was very short lived at least, much like his attention span.

But it was just Cohen. All Cohen. The Donald had nothing to do with it.
Considering that Cohen hasn't retracted the letter he wrote in her name denying the affair and didn't say specifically why he made the payment, that incredulously seems to be the angle they're going for.

I wonder how the payment of $150k to the Playboy centerfold by the National Enquirer is viewed? It is rumored they bought her story in order to kill it.

I’d like to get a pastor’s view on this. Probably something about “he’s a changed man” or “wasn’t president then” will be pointed out.

If he's being honest, he'll say he doesn't care about a president with an 'R' by his name raw-dogging a porn star while his wife and newborn baby are at home.

Maybe if he squints his eyes, he can look at the $130K hush money to Daniels as a Christian move...maybe the money will afford her the luxury of leaving the porn industry behind. She - and we - should be thanking Donald J Trump for showing us all how to attain a better life.

Would anyone be surprised to see someone like Van - or Sarah Huckabee Sanders - tried to spin that angle? In the good ol' USA of 2018 I wouldn't...

Legal question: she got paid $130K and signed an NDA. If she told her story, sure, I can see she'd have to give back the $130K, but would the NDA also have a big penalty clause as well?

Edit to add: could any of the parties be legally required to acknowledge the NDA's existence, and/or disclose its contents? I'm thinking in terms of an investigation into campaign finance violations.

I’m wondering if an attorney can make the argument that since Cohen has admitted to paying the hush money if the NDA is even valid anymore.

I think you’ve unintentionally brought up another issue. Safe sex should be the woman’s responsibility. Dudes are always wanting to go raw.

The very same thought crossed my mind. However, a breach by one party does not typically invalidate a contract. She still has to live up to her part of the contract (unless something in the contract states otherwise). Of course you do have messy issues such as contract repudiation, termination, etc. Also, we're assuming that the obligation of confidentiality is mutual. That is not always the case.

Who cares about money when you've already forfeited your dignity?

I think you're being awfully hard on Cohen.

Also, if she did sign an NDA, and then violate it, what's Trump going to do? Sue her?

Exactly, and drag this out? She will have her day, her money, and this knucklehead cant touch her. Should he choose to do so everything grinds to a halt and its Jerry Springer time, not that it hasnt been for, well, since day one. If he had any balls, which clearly he doesnt, she has him by them at this point. I dont think "nuance" can refute this shit show. Embarrassing for anyone with any sense who is an American.

Baw Haw Haw! You are precisely correct. Which is why agreements like this are so often absurd to begin with. As the payor, you are often relying merely on the payee's good faith, etc. Because, if that payee violates the NDA there is not a whole lot you can do about it. Sure, you could probably get your money back. But the cost to your reputation, livelihood, etc. will be far greater.

One wonders how many similar NDA's Stormy has entered into. I have a hunch that Trump's is not the first.

Interesting...I thought you were going to say that you had a hunch that Stormy's wasn't Trump's first. ;)

I heard suggestions when she was on Kimmel or Fallon that she wants sued.

I'm more interested in how many NDAs entered her... If ya know what I mean

I bet it will be an anti-climax. ;)

He likes his trophy wives -- for people to see and overcompensation. So the usual post-coital reports will be about his generic sex (since external affirmation is more important) and what we already know, small finger.
Personally I hope she spins a hell of a tail. True or not, I want it weird and entertaining. I want him to say publicly "I never screamed ivanka!" "No I didn't walk on all fours with a feather duster stuck in my @ss clucking like a chicken!"

If your going to go, go big and make it fun.

:):D and Melania will be counting the money in a few years time.

It's good to see that Stormy Daniels story isn't going away. It's probably one of the least consequential things he's done but it certainly has the most potential for easy-to-understand scandal. Hopefully, she spills it all out now.

While this is all funny....isn't there a legit legal issue here, with campaign finance law?

This is most definitely a highest bidder situation. If the most money can be made by telling her story, then she will tell it. But, if more money can be made by rattling cages and getting paid to keep quiet again, then you'll be left disappointed.

You don’t think Trump made the illegal immigrant sign a prenup before he married her? I guess the amount of money she gets hinges on custody.
