Honest question. Do any of you think that a coach would allow their players to flounder in a game to prove a point? Not saying Archie did this, but aren't there benefits for a team getting their asses kicked early in the season? Basically saying if you don't "buy in" to playing my way then this is the result.

If CAM's goal was to embarrass the team and fan base and be able to claim one of the worst home losses in IU history he was successful.

Didn’t look like he was getting after them. Yes, once it went bad, let them fail so they will put in the effort and listen. Worst home opening loss of all time may do that.

I was supported when RJ turned over the ball on the first play driving wildly and jump out of bounds to make a pass. I expected to see his ass on the bench right then and there and nothing happened.

This play has to stop!

I do believe that some might do this. Did Archie? Maybe, maybe not.
The team sure didn't seem to get the message by half-time. Among the many things that were disturbing about the game, was no apparent change in effort/performance etc. after being butt-whipped in the first half.

They finally showed some fight around 10:00 left in the game down 30....May have been a little late to start giving 100% effort.

It's a tactic that does obviously get deployed at times. Probably more so in the middle of a season when your post season is not necessarily in doubt etc.

I don't think your home opener, in your debut as coach would ever be the right time for it

His teams at Dayton would beat the crap out of this team. He’s got a lot of work to do.

Archie definitely wasn't getting after them, even on some spectacular defensive breakdowns.

First game we went to, so I am not yet sure what his sideline demeanor is, but after sitting behind a ferret on crack for the last nine years, Arch seemed comparatively asleep.

The Montessori method of coaching basketball. The players can figure it out themselves without coaching input

Yes. When some of Knight's teams were playing badly, he left the same group on the floor in several games just to teach them a lesson.

I think it was in 94 at Minnesota where we got beat by 50 and he just benched everyone for the second half. Also the game at UI in 85 where he benched 4 starters for the whole game.

Started all Freshmen, didn't he? I recall it and was glad he did it (the UI game).

But I think that may have been the Steve Alford calendar game, where Knight started Uwe Blab and the Four Freshmen in a nationally televised game to protest the NCAA rule prohibiting Alford from letting his image to be used in a fundraising calendar.

In other words, it was a decision Knight made before the game, not because the players were playing badly.

Alford was suspended before IU played UK in December of 1985 for posing for the calendar. The Illinois game featuring 4 freshmen and Blab was Knight sending a message to the four benched starters. It was in the 84-85 season.

The two situations were not in any way related and didn’t occur during the same season.

Thanks. I got the games mixed up.

Alford missed the UK game the following year as his calendar-gate suspension. The Illinois game I think served several purposes all at once.

Here's an article with an interesting take from back in the day. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1985-01-28/sports/8501060255_1_starters-illinois-real-basketball

I believe coaching is a complex and complicated business and I, personally, would put nothing past a coach desperate to motivate his team.
That being said, I also believe:

No it was not because the game he was suspended was against UK

This team will get better so everyone relax. We need garland and romeo and the class behind them will be loaded! Things will turn around quickly for IU...I guarantee it

Right, the U.K. Calendar game and the UI benching games were different seasons. I recall the rich irony of Alford sitting out for promoting a Soroity fundraising calendar against the likes of UK.
