In watching the Eagles turn things around this year all the way to the Super Bowl victory over the evil empire (though I sure respect Tom Brady now at age 41!!), it got me thinking of the similarities between him and Coach Allen.
-Nine Years ago Doug Pederson was coaching High School Football. What was Tom Allen, about 10 or 11 years ago the same? Both moved up fast and focused. DP focused on offense, TA on defense.
-Both men are of strong faith. I do not believe deep Christianity is a prerequisite for the job, but having strong convictions gives them both it appears a real trust in things will work out if you do your best mentality.
-Great leadership. It seems clear that the Eagles will run thru a wall for Pederson and he's really well liked and trusted by coaches too. Believe Tom Allen has that same gift with his staff and the players who really seem to have bought in.
-Good talent around them. DP has got a great staff including OC Frank Reich and DC Jim Schwartz. Allen has gone with a vet Debord at OC and seems like a defacto DC in Hagan. Time will tell on IU's overall staff but their seems to be a good comraderie and ability to co-recruit. Lastly, let's not forget Ballou and his staff Allen brought on who I think are going to be game changers for the program.
I won't go overboard and say Allen is = Super Bowl winner just yet. But he is a great guy, focused, disciplined, demands accountability but does it authentically and from a place of loving them first. Pederson seems to be of a similar ilk. I don't think it was an accident Eagles are winning and I believe IU will be on a strong trajectory ahead.
