Coach Cig’s Water Cooler Tailgate: Gotta Light?

‘93 was the number 1 team going into the tournament, but Henderson’s injury was too much to overcome. Of course, ‘82 was a what might have been team. If Turner didn’t have his car accident and Isiah hadn’t gone pro it would have been a favorite. Oh well.
Okay, 8 banners for Knight, then, rather than 6.

“220, 221, whatever it takes.”

Dumb take. Nobody is calling for Cig’s head, but our game plan offensively was terrible. Rourkes pick inside the 20 ruined the offense, it couldn’t recover after that. No adjustments.

Even a good coach can have a bad game. This was a bad game, particularly as it relates to offensive scheme and play calling. Ohio St had far more fluke plays. We just got our asses whooped in this one.
We needed to stop running RPO's on 3rd and long. Just call a pass play. Rourke was making the "right" decision, but ND's front 6 was good enough to stop the run on it's own. By midway through the 3rd, I would have stopped RPO on 2nd down as well.

Totally outclassed last night. Being there was kind of miserable. Seeing them play like complete shit. Every facet of the game was poor. Offense was downright bad. Defense was OK but the tackling was very poor. Special teams again stunk.

It was a magical season and Cig is the right guy. While all these 0 and 1 star Johnny Try Hards make for a good story, we need dudes. Bigger, faster, stronger. The gap is wide right now. Our DL doesn’t rotate in guys. Those guys played the entire game. That is not a winning proposition.

Here’s my one Cig concern. Both of our humiliations came with 2 weeks to prepare. Yes, those games were against top level opponents, but both times IU was sloppy and looked overwhelmed. Aside from the opening TD drive against OSU, the offense looked downright awful in both games.

I was pissed last night driving home. Today I just feel despondent. We can celebrate the season and also have a clear headed, sober evaluation of the shortcomings.
The notion that this team was going to compete for a natty was a fantasy, for the reasons you list. Plenty of IU fans, though, got caught up in the moment and forgot talent matters. It's understandable for a fan base that saw Knight routinely put together really good teams that could beat superior talent. But that's much, much harder (maybe impossible) to do in college football today.

IF IU goes all in on football, like North Carolina apparently is, maybe we can get a team with a puncher's chance in the next 7-10 years under Cignetti. But, of course, then it just comes down to outbidding other teams for mercenaries.

College sports is broken and it's not going back.

Football and basketball need to some how separate from other sports too. Vermont won the national championship in soccer this year. Their budget is $750k

The season, for me, turned when Evans went down on the line.

I've wondered how our line would have done with him in the lineup. It couldn't have been any worse, but I suspect we would have better protection and been able to open up a few more holes on the offensive line.

Goes to show we're still a ways away as far as depth goes.

It’s about athletes. Always has been in football. A team’s defense tells on itself in that regard.

You can design an offense to score against 95% of teams. But those top ten. Whoa. Even with the advantage of knowing the play and the split second advantage our guys would normally have, athletic ability can eat that up. Especially the o line. They had no chance.

Cignetti is going to have a huge chip on his shoulder, which I hope can transfer to next year’s team. And that team is going to look a lot different. New portal guys and recruits. I’m getting too old to adjust.

IU has a basketball game at noon. I’ll watch but I’m rapidly losing interest. We haven’t done anything of note since fvcking 1987. This was a great football year but it could be our peak. Much like the Bengals. Get to a Super Bowl with Burrow but slowly falling back to mediocrity. IU may be the perennial 8-4, 7-5 Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois/Michigan State second tier - which is obviously an improvement - team, but not a threat to osu, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State. So, hello average, have a seat.

It’s tiresome and I’m old. Don’t have much time to have that one great moment. Hoping it comes in the 2026 season when we play osu at home. That would be just the third time in my lifetime.

But I just can’t get into the basketball thrill like I once did. We won’t make the tournament and if we do by some miracle we’ll suffer another embarrassing loss. So, I’m like, Blech. I was thinking this morning that I can’t name one guy on any of the other 17 teams in the conference. Hell, I can probably only name a handful of the coaches. Years ago you could name the starting lineup for just about every Big Ten team - their guys had been there a while, as you watched them develop, and you knew who the freshmen of impact were coming in. Now it’s “who the hell are these guys; they’re all interchangeable.” Damn, there are times I feel that way about our team, given the portal.

So, fvck it, I’m depressed. Won’t watch it but I sure as hell hope Tennessee kicks the snot out of osu.
See above. I’m fine with being Wisconsin. Expectation management mode….engaged.

But, again, if this result isn’t clear evidence to those dullards on the BOT that Scott Dolson can find a gotdam coach on his own without the Buckner squad then I do t know what is. Get out of the man’s way please.

Watching Chattanooga out-hustle us and out-shoot us. Wouldn’t be surprised if they pull the “upset.”

This can’t continue. We need tests like the MCAT and LSAT for basketball knowledge and situational awareness.

Dolson sitting looking up at Woodson while Woodson’s talking with the refs about a potential goal-tending call. What is he thinking? C’mon, Scott, pull that damn trigger.

About the "Wisconsin expectation" from an old Badger fan.

The Alvarez/Christ way of recruiting and coaching has been replaced with the NIL/Portal system as being implemented by a new Athletic Director (Chris McIntosh) and football coach (Luke Fickell).

As of this date, the IU expectations appear to be way more promising than my Badger expectations from the couch where I am sitting.

Oh, I know all that. But the slide began after 1987.

A good case can be made that Knight could have had six banners. 1975, obviously. 1973, when we lost to UCLA and the infamous Downing/Walton charging/block call. And, 1992.

Some people will just never totally understand what an exhilarating era that was.
If Bird doesn’t hitchhike home…

Iu basketball is unwatchable. It’s just an awful product. Incredibly boring. I’d rather see a reality show on that shed. Fball will settle into where it belongs as you say. We don’t have the infrastructure resources history etc to land the 5 stars to compete with the big dogs. That’s okay. 8-4 is still fun. But yes you are running out of time to have that moment. And the bad news. It won’t come through iu. The good news? You can make that moment yourself. You’re retired. Have resources. And are in a great state. Competition BBQ. Spend this winter researching rigs. Spend the next two years learning. Then hone your trade. These competition bbq guys aren’t the brightest bulbs out there. I suspect within five years you can be amongst the elite. And if I were a betting man, get your moment on stage….
All men’s basketball is mostly unwatchable. It’s the three pointer. And the big galluckas whose range is about 24 inches.

Yup I rarely watch it. I tried watching a bit at the start of the season and quickly lost interest.

I don't think it's a controversial take to watch the game and realize the last 5 minutes of offense was much much different then the first 55. It's also not much of a stretch to recognize we should have been attacking the same way at the start of the 3rd quarter.

ND didn't have much time to throw either. This is off memory and without checking, but I only remember two passes over 15 yards for them. One in each half. I'm guessing their ADoT was about 8. Ours over the last 5 minutes was probably higher than that, but only slightly.

ND's strategy to combat the pressure was better than ours, until the end. Those plays in the last 5 minutes worked and they knew we were in a passing situation. It's hard to argue that the same strategy wouldn't have worked at the start of the 3rd, while we still had the threat of the run.

Having said that, love the coaches. Love the team. And I'm excited for next year and the opportunity for them to prove themselves again.
The whole team looked tense in the first quarter, more than ND. I can’t explain third quarter. They looked more normal at the ende.

And McGinnis would have been on the 1973 team.

The only programs that say stars don’t matter are the programs that can’t get 5 and 4 stars. Talent, size, athleticism, and speed matter. A good system built with players who work in that system can exceed expectations, but you still need the dudes.

Center Grove can win state any year they have 2-4high level D 1 kids. But because of the system, they can be a top 4-6 team in down talent years. It’s the talent pop that gets you 3 straight state titles.

The 98 yard touchdown was just backbreaking. Outside of that, we gave up like 86 yards on 33 carries.

That was just one of those fluke plays that you tip your hat to the offense for making.
Especially in the context of the game. We get a pick in ND territory. We are comfortably in FG range. Then Rourke gives it back and next play boom 98 yards. At least a 10 point swing. Killer.

So, other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?

How did everyone else’s night go aside from the obvious?

Mine went well. I pan seared a couple of ribeyes in my cast iron skillet. First time I’ve ever done that and it was AMAZING. I’ll definitely be doing that again.

Had some nice bourbon and spent a quality evening with the wife.

And yes, the evening ended very well, IYKWIM.

I have a ribbed cast iron skillets just for steaks. Results in a grilled look. I still grill steaks if I’m doing more than just for the bride and me, but the cast iron steaks are easier and just as good or better.

That last line is going to be hard. The Gator Bowl experience of drunken Vol fans singing Rocky Top all day, all night, is still a fresh wound. And sing is being polite, scream is most the way to what they were doing. Plus the two SEC announcers last night suggesting the B10 is crap really has me in a foul mood on the SEC.

But damn, it is hard to ever want tO$U to do well.
I’m going to be for anyone but SEC. They think playoffs should be all SEC teams. And now they are dominating in basketball.

We won’t get picked again after a year like this one. Smu either. Herbstreit destroyed us this morning. In the future a 9-3 bama or coots will go ahead of us. If I had to bet money both bama and Carolina would beat us. Our schedule was incredibly favorable

My nephew is a Griswold skillet collector. I had no idea that was even a thing until he started doing it.

Some of the really rare pieces sell for tens of thousands of dollars.

Bama and Ole Miss were the best teams left out.

Boise is the weakest team in and they are the 3 seed….which means they will probably beat Penn St

Can remember being on a football team with a win streak of impressive wins against inferior teams.

Then along comes an opponent with the talent, size, speed, and athleticism which C88 describes in his post. At half time after being humiliated our coach tells us we aren't executing along with failing to block and tackle.

Before sending us out for the second half our gentleman coach implores us to "knock the pudin' out of them".

After we got the iconic you need better execution speech plus a highly emotion plea, we still got whipped even worse the second half.

After the game my date asked me what happened. I responded, "They knocked the pudin' out of us".

She smiled and chuckled quietly.

I had 4 or 5 of my too heavy beers. Ate pizza and wings. Woke up around 3am with a headache and had a glass of water. Woke up at 6am with less of a headache but not feeling great with a slight buzz. Went for a walk and watched two bucks battle at the park. Somehow avoided a hangover and took my kid to ninja class.

Currently finishing my six pack with Bluey on big tv and football on my laptop. Ready for a full two weeks of no work.
