Chuck Marlowe on Bob Knights declining health

I feel like I have been punched in the gut. Some of my best (and worst frankly) memories of IU basketball have Bob Knight @ the forefront. I have a great appreciation for what he has meant and still means to the state, the university, the game and the fans. I will say that while I am disappointed in how his dismissal was handled, I am equally disappointed in the grudge he has held towards IU all these years. His flaws are well chronicled, and criticisms of him while not always fair were still mostly deserved. Through it all, I remained a fan of his and hoped that the chasm would eventually be closed and bygones could be bygones. I cannot imagine a worse affliction for a man like Bob Knight to be saddled with as some form of dementia. While he likely had access to the best treatment and has a solid support system in place, the story will end with the same outcome as anyone else with this malady. I truly wish him the best.

I would take it with a grain of salt at this point. I love Don, but it sounds like he spoke out of turn and its’ very much just gossip and innuendo. The same article says that RMK will be attending an upcoming event in Indiana with Bob Hammell in April.

Dick Vital tweeted that he called his wife Karen since her heard the reports. He stated that Karen said coach was fine and was out fishing.

Till something becomes official people can say what they think, then some may choose to not speak ill of the dead. He lost me when he wished ill on some people who had just been doing their jobs. He was once probably on balance a good man but that’s long gone.

I hope the report that coach Knight is out fishing is true. He is obviously a complicated man, and his worst moments were clearly unacceptable.

That said, I did have the chance to meet him a few times when I was on campus in the mid 80s. One encounter at the Union was a one-on-one conversation for a half hour. All we talked about was military history. He has a brilliant mind and incredible memory.

Ah yes the self righteous rush to judgement. If you have been around anyone with this disease you would know that it often deepens negative emotions. If he is in the incipient stages he might still function at a reasonable level and yet the emotional centers in the brain are already impacted.

Ya know much of what people say is BS. You also must look more importantly at what people do. For goodness sake he did a lot of good and the bad attributed to him lies in the realm of BS. I guess he should have been an emotionless robot to satisfy the self righteous public.

Wish coach the best..

If you have two men which of these do you prefer-
Man 1 says-I wish you were dead. In this case you know where you stand with this person and you can take action that you believe is appropriate based on this information.
Man 2 says-you are a great person but what he actually thinks is-I wish you were dead.

Which of these do you prefer or do you believe that it is unacceptable to wish bad for anyone for any reason?

I will take Man 1. The only Confucian aphorism I remember is-
If what isis said is not meant then twhat ought to be done remains undone and justice goes astray.

RMK said what he meant but his opponents practiced the opposite and justice went astray.

I would prefer neither.

someone wishes I was dead I’d just as soon they kept quiet about it and of course not do anything about it.

Many of you don't visit Gold and Black. Understandable. However, there is an extensive string on the free forum about this very subject that pretty much all of you may find interesting.

I'm a Boiler for life, but as time marches on, I find myself remembering more of the good and less of the bad of RMK. That's probably a natural progression. He had/has his flaws, but he sculpted many a good man, was wildly successful, and played by the rules as far as anyone knows. Twin Degress has a nice post in the string detailing some of the good that is never mentioned by his detractors. I have a feeling there is much more good that most of us will ever know.

I thought you would all want to know.

I wanted to add a little more to this, and I'd like to add context to my comments by saying the following: I have an 18 year old daughter set to graduate high school this year. She has been accepted to IU for the fall. It is the only college she applied to even though she has the grades to go anywhere she wants. She couldn't care less about sports, and she has fallen in love with that campus. She is going there again Wednesday for an additional visit. 20 years ago, I would have had a huge problem with all of this. I would have viewed it as choosing the enemy. Now, I'm ok with it, and if she brought me an IU t-shirt I would wear it when she was around.

My point is this, I think RMK was one of the most polarizing figures in sports history. Gene Keady was/is very successful, played by the rules, and also sculpted many a good man. It was that rivalry that started in the fall of 1980 until about 2000. And, I think it all comes down to this. RMK was so polarizing that the fever that rivalry reached could have been reached without Keady. It could not have been achieved without RMK.

I think for many, it is fading today, and it is because RMK is no longer on the scene. Yes, the basketball and football games are circled on the calender each year, but most of us don't plan our lives around those games any more. I know I don't.
