There have been some very good, close hard fought games in the Iowa-IU series. In 1979, Indiana rained on Hayden Fry's debut at Iowa, with a 30-26 win at Iowa. The Hoosiers rallied from a 26-3 deficit at halftime.

Kirk Ferentz is the dean of the Big Ten, in his 17th season as head coach. He is in his 26th season at Iowa. He was an offensive line coach from 1981 to 1989 under Fry. I believe Mack Brown is right, when he says Kirk Ferentz is an excellent coach. He knows Iowa well. His overall body of work has been worth every penny, though many objected over the past several seasons.

Ferentz's 2002 team went 8-0 in the Big Ten. It was his fourth season as head coach, with fourth year OC and DC. This season's team is lead by fourth year OC and DC, as Ferentz looks to rebound from five down seasons (19-21 in B1G). In 2010, Iowa did win against Missouri in their bowl game. They have not won a bowl game since, missing in 2012.

Iowa has won 5 of last 6 in the IU series ... two of last three in Bloomington.
Iowa does lead the series 43-28-4 overall, with a 19-18-1 record in Bloomington.

A win by this Kevin Wilson team, would be the biggest win, in the Wilson era?

Nate Sudfeld is 0-2 as a starter against Iowa. C.J. Beathard is 8-0 as a starter for the Hawkeyes.

At the end of the day, Sudfeld is very capable, and Beathard isn't at 100% and will not be the rest of the regular season, but he is smart QB, better choice than Jake Rudock, who is now at Michigan.

Sudfeld has had back to back terrible first half performances against Iowa. The 2010 game in Bloomington, then last year's game, where Iowa knocked him out of the game. It will be a physical game. All games in November are in the Big Ten.

Of course, in the past, there is the old saying ... three is a charm, but Northwestern didn't experience that against Jake Rudock or Iowa in 2015.

Did everyone see Minnesota's hit on former Iowa QB Jake Rudock, in the third quarter of the Michigan win?

Iowa is four deep at RB. All three RBs scored in the first half against Maryland to take a 21-0 lead at half. Iowa has been hit with a lot of injuries. Three of the four RBs have missed time. Both OT starters; Iowa lost their best DE Drew Ott for the season, against Illinois. He missed most of the Iowa State and Pittsburgh game, due to an elbow injury. Iowa has been missing their top WR and top TE this season. The old motto at Iowa is "next man in" and it has been relied on this season.

Iowa has two running backs among the Top 5 in Big Ten games. There is some speculation that Jordan Canzeri may be available, but my guess would be that it will be Wadley, Daniels and Mitchell as a 1-2-3 punch. They all bring something different to the table.

Iowa's best defense against the IU team. Something that frustrated Maryland in the first half, was ball control and keeping Maryland's defense on the field.

This is a far better defense for Iowa, then the last five editions. Iowa has played well on offense, defense and in special team. Defense does win championships, the old saying goes. It will be a huge aspect on Saturday.

The Iowa game with Maryland was a very sloppy, especially in the second half by Iowa. Most Rivals' Hawkeyes fans would likely agree. Iowa was coming off a bye week. It helped get Iowa

This game should be very interesting. This Iowa team is playing at a high level, like the 2009 Hawkeyes team that opened 9-0 on the season. They played at Ohio State for the Big Ten title, losing in OT, with a QB making his first start, as a redshirt freshman.

Iowa's backup QB is a redshirt freshman, by the way, if C.J. Beathard can't play. He was a 4* recruit, like Beathard. Iowa is a team of 2* and 3* players, but they have 4* QB in reserve.

Iowa enjoyed a game opener against IU lite, playing Illinois State in the season opener. Former IU QB Tre Roberson looked horrible. He was the third most effective QB in the game. He completed his career 0-2, as a starter against Iowa, as well. You all may remember his first start in the 2011 game in Iowa City?

The key to this games lies in two area; one, our secondary is our weakness. No one has run the ball effectively against IU until they exploit a very inexperienced but talented backfield. UI must pass the ball if they want to run. Our front seven on defense are pretty good. So are the linebackers. It's all about stopping third and long and that's where IU has gotten the into trouble and seen the game fall apart. The bye was perfect for IU to get offensive players healed and the secondary coached up.

Second, Iowa has not seen an offense like ours. Few have. When at strength, they can hit you in so many ways, and perhaps the best back in the country when not hurt. He punishes defenses, flat puts the hurt on them. Watch the tape and see how many would be tacklers get blown backwards on their butts. By the fourth quarter guys are missing him on purpose. There is receiver talent and TE talent, speed and power. IU goes at least three deep in RB but Redding is dinged up so they may dig deeper into a talented pool of young backs like Majette. The kicking game, minus last game on soggy field, is a real strong point for IU.

I still think UI has the edge, but don't think this won't be a war. Should be great game for all.

The Hoosiers need to have at least a 21 pts
lead by the end of the 3rd Quarter to stand
a good chance of winning. Going into an unmotivated
funk in the 4th Quarter was our demise in the Rutgers
game.

Since the Interception last year against IU; I believe that was a Pic 6, Desmond King had another one against Maryland for 88 yards; he has 7 interceptions this season to lead the FBS (tied for #1).

1. The Line of scrimmage will be very important against Iowa. Maryland's OC/interim coach Mike Locksley was right.

2. Balance on offense is important. IU will use the pass to set up the run, but balance is always important in football.

3. Wisconsin and Illinois are more pass than run this season. IU is more effective at it and will clearly be the best passing offenses Iowa has faced. Iowa State is good in the passing game. They have some very good receivers. They lost their talented TE from last year.

4. Illinois State is a better team than Indiana per Sagarin Ratings
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/

5. Bye weeks do help, but they can impact timing of offenses, as well.

We shall see how it all plays out. I expect a very competitive game. The Iowa-ISU game went into the fourth quarter and this game is very much like that one, when you look at the passing games.

By the way, Iowa did a better job against Maryland QB Perry Hills, than Ohio State. Iowa has a better run defense than Ohio State, from a Big Ten statistical standpoint.

peace

Will Iowa get RB #33 Jordan Canzeri back for the Hoosiers? Here is him running against them last season.

I might differ from your nice analysis to say that before Howard got hurt, we were a run first team and should return to that after the bye. Earlier, the run set up the pass for us and I'm hoping that's the case again. Do not underestimate Howard...he's that good. If he's even 95%, you'll see one of the top five backs in the country.

I don't disagree that Howard may be the best RB on the field on Saturday. I also believe Iowa has a better rushing attack collectively. They may be 3-4 deep, which I don't believe Indiana can say.

We shall see. Iowa overall is a better rushing team, than Indiana. Right now in the Big Ten, Iowa has two players in the Top 5.

Will the Iowa game be junior Jordan Howard's coming out party in the Big Ten?

4-0 Iowa vs. 0-4 Indiana ... November 7th at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN

"There's a lot of good. It's not good enough," Indiana coach Kevin Wilson said during the Bye Week. "Most people in most things want to give in. That's not what I'm about, and that's not what we're going to be about. We're not going to make excuses. We need to win. We're here to win. We're going to win. And we're going to have a great opportunity with Iowa and the next four games. Let's get ready and go after it."

IU has been exceptional against the run but have allowed a few big ones when they have gotten through the first line of defenders. Ferentz is a good coach and I expect some wrinkles. Last year IU thought they were going to pound it and they came out bombing and ran out to a big lead. IU managed to close the gap until Sudfeld went down. I expect a good game and hopefully IU can hang in there for 4 quarters this time.

The Iowa special teams > Indiana special team thus far in 2015 in Big Ten games.
  • Iowa has senior PK and PT ... Koehn kicked the game winning 57 yarder against Pitt
  • Big Reason Iowa has won games against three Power 5 teams with 6 wins
  • Iowa blocked a punt in the 1st half against Maryland.
  • Punter Kidd did very well facing Maryland's Likely (one of the best in FBS as RS)

I assume we have Sud and Howard close to 100%....

If so, I'd give us a 30% chance of a win. Possible, not likely....but not a "no effing way we win" game like we had last year after Sud went down (at Iowa...coincidently).

Iowa has seen an offense like IU's, and they've done a pretty solid job of defending it (29, 24 and 24 points surrendered in KWs 3 games against the Hawks). There's little IU will do that Iowa hasn't already seen.

Nope.

Sudfeld is 0-1 as a starter. Started the 2014 game at your place. Cam Coffman started the 2012 game, played a series, got replaced by Sudfeld, then went back in late in the first half to ignite the comeback. That wound up being Coffman's best game as IU QB: 21-33-0 / 315 yds / 3 TD in just a bit more than a half. Scary to think what he might have done had Wilson not yanked him for the freshman Sudfeld for a big chunk of the first half. (I'll assume your 2010 is a typo - Nate was playing HS ball in California in 2010).

Our punter and kicker are outstanding too. 90% of our kickoffs can't be returned, our field goal kicker had a bad day in weather last game but was perfect on FG and PATs before that. Plus our T/O margins are outstanding and may play a factor this week.

IU has had an outstanding punting game? That's an incredibly generous assessment, as is your view of place kicking (which has definitely been better).

Never forget Turner apparently magically floating 1/2" above the end zone turf for five feet until he was out of bounds in the 2009 raping in Iowa.

While the air flow from his aerial foot caused a roosertail of field turf pellets not seen since Miss Budweiser roamed the Ohio. :D

Of course IU beat Iowa in 2006 when Iowa was was ranked 15th in the country and then turned around and beat them in Iowa City in 2007... I see those were conveniently left off the list there.

I do believe that reading cid's Iowa online pep rally there, I just had an "Iowagasm."

I think everybody gets it:
Iowa will make mincemeat of the Hoosiers this Saturday.
You'll likely do the same in basketball.

Iowa was awful in 2006 and 2007. IU's best team in 17 years was 2007, so not too surprising that the Hoosiers were victorious. They were eligible to bowl each of those seasons, but not good.

Overall, Iowa leads in the series, though it is only +1 in Bloomington. Of course, Iowa from 1961 to 1980 didn't have a winning season.

What you need to understand is, Cid is the village idiot on the Iowa board. His posts make even the most die hard Hawk fans heads hurt.

I didn't qualify the wins cid. I simply said IU beat them and Iowa was ranked #15 in 2006 at the time of the win, so somebody must have thought they were worth something.
Hell, we could argue that IU was terrible in all the years Iowa won, which is also probably true.
I do remember that Iowa could never stop James Hardy. He could always count on Iowa to put up career numbers.

IU is tied with Michigan in the B1G for field goal kicking with an .833 average and is 11th in punting at 35.1 yards.

We're not sure either.
He got hurt against Ahia State, did not play against Rutgers or Penn State, and played sparingly against MSU.
He had 145 (So. Ill.), 159 (Fla. Atl.), 203 (Western Ky.) and 168 (wake) in our pre-conference games.

If he is 100%, bring your camera
He's a 230 pound Birmingham Boulder
He can make a linebacker believe.
