Painter has trended up, Izzo is falling, Holtmann has failed .. Also, it wasn't who will be best in five years, it was who was best then. What they do now has no bearing on then, and what they did then has nothing to do with now ..things change, players changes, rules change, coaches change ..
Underwood brought in a numbers guys and changed his philosophy. Painter now has an offensive specialist whom he's delegated to. Collins brought in a defensive specialist and changed his philosophy ..
At that time though .. Izzo was the best in conference, now it's Painter, before that it was Beilein/Izzo and before that it was Ryan.
Painter is easily best in conference currently followed by probably Gard.. Who will it be in five years? Who knows ...
Have to give Painter the nod, right now, for obvious reasons. Next year will be telling though, assuming he doesn't have Edey any more. But he's kept them playing at a very high level for a number of years now, and the Lance Jones addition this year shows an awareness and ability to use today's portal dynamic to improve his team.
Gard did the same thing with Storr...while keeping his core together.
Underwood did the same thing with Domask this year, and Shannon last year.
I think those 3 have probably separated themselves in terms of keeping their teams playing good basketball, continuously thriving either by keeping a roster together, or by addressing roster turnover issues quickly, etc...
Pikell had some good teams, and has a couple top 5 kids coming in next year, gonna be interesting to see how that year goes, and how he "cashes in" on that, if he does at all...
Collins has built a very solid program. But I'm not sure he's elevated it, or will elevate it, much further than what its been for a number of years. Good teams, play hard, win more than they lose, high end ceiling of NCAA team that might surprise as a 2nd weekend team...and low end of solid NIT team.
Izzo seems like he's been in a slow fade now for 10+ years. Doesn't seem like that's going to change?
Hoiberg looks to be improving Nebraska's program. But I think he needs a couple more years of improvements to be considered near the top.
The rest are either brand new, or blah.
Woody is probably near the bottom, for me, along with Howard.
