Bustingbrackets rates all 14 big ten coaches

He may not be fired (Fred Glass), but 15 years with one elite 8 and zero final 4s?

I'd for sure want him gone and I know plenty of IU fans that would agree. That being said, IU has always had a much higher ceiling than Purdue so who knows what he could do here.
And how many BT championships? The same fans who say they would want him gone thought Crean was great.

I know a lot of IU fans (including my whole family) that aren't on this board. We all wanted Crean gone after the Vonleh and Wichita State debacles.

Painter is a fine coach, but one elite 8 in 15 seasons isn't going to cut it at IU. I personally couldn't care less about BIG10 championships if they don't translate to the tournament. Especially with the uneven schedules.

Holtmann and Archie may both be better than Painter long term. Painter has likely reached his ceiling, while Holtmann and Archie have not peaked yet in the B1G. Izzo may be getting close to calling it a career (Fife waiting in the wings).

I certainly hope so. dear God.

I haven't seen Juwan Howard coach yet but I expect him to be no better than mediocre long term.

Of the returning coaches, I think Pitino is the worst. Chambers gets his team's to play hard but he struggles to pull out wins. Collins is better than his record, I think he has been above average. Fran is pretty good at both recruiting and establishing strategy. If you are a "roster build" guy, Fran has been good.

In the same light Underwood and Holtman have really recruited well. It should start to pay off for Underwood this season. Painter probably has the best offensive system in the Big Ten right now, and his guys buy in and play defense. Miller has been one sided as a defensive coach but he has had to undo a previous system of sloppy basketball. I will say that I believe Miller's man offense is bad. The high weave with the double screen on the ball- it never works. If that is based on personnel, then it must begin to change this year (3rd).

I really like Rutgers philosophy of play, sort of a no holds barred, just play hard, approach. But they have a long way to go to prove anything. Hoiberg has had success and he will have resources at Nebraska. We shall see. Gard did a great job taking over for Bo but so far he hasn't recruited quite at the same level. But Wisconsin plays a brand of basketball, and that comes from good coaching. If Gard is good, this year will prove it. Personally I don't think they will have the inside threat to command doubles this year, so if he doesn't get something going outside he won't get the job done.

Izzo has been exceptional as a coach for his entire career. No question there.

I don't think it is that easy to rank them, but Pitino, to me, for the talent he has brought in, has not been as good as he could have been, so I rank him lowest.
I would say the same about Turgeon, but at least his team's are top 4 or 5. He gets them in the tourney.
Seems about right 5 years later. Anyone else want to comment on their previous rankings?

Painter has trended up, Izzo is falling, Holtmann has failed .. Also, it wasn't who will be best in five years, it was who was best then. What they do now has no bearing on then, and what they did then has nothing to do with now ..things change, players changes, rules change, coaches change ..

Underwood brought in a numbers guys and changed his philosophy. Painter now has an offensive specialist whom he's delegated to. Collins brought in a defensive specialist and changed his philosophy ..

At that time though .. Izzo was the best in conference, now it's Painter, before that it was Beilein/Izzo and before that it was Ryan.

Painter is easily best in conference currently followed by probably Gard.. Who will it be in five years? Who knows ...

Have to give Painter the nod, right now, for obvious reasons. Next year will be telling though, assuming he doesn't have Edey any more. But he's kept them playing at a very high level for a number of years now, and the Lance Jones addition this year shows an awareness and ability to use today's portal dynamic to improve his team.

Gard did the same thing with Storr...while keeping his core together.

Underwood did the same thing with Domask this year, and Shannon last year.

I think those 3 have probably separated themselves in terms of keeping their teams playing good basketball, continuously thriving either by keeping a roster together, or by addressing roster turnover issues quickly, etc...

Pikell had some good teams, and has a couple top 5 kids coming in next year, gonna be interesting to see how that year goes, and how he "cashes in" on that, if he does at all...

Collins has built a very solid program. But I'm not sure he's elevated it, or will elevate it, much further than what its been for a number of years. Good teams, play hard, win more than they lose, high end ceiling of NCAA team that might surprise as a 2nd weekend team...and low end of solid NIT team.

Izzo seems like he's been in a slow fade now for 10+ years. Doesn't seem like that's going to change?

Hoiberg looks to be improving Nebraska's program. But I think he needs a couple more years of improvements to be considered near the top.

The rest are either brand new, or blah.

Woody is probably near the bottom, for me, along with Howard.

Painter built this recent run on developed upperclassman bigs, which is the hardest position to learn and play in NCAA basketball. It's given him continuity which will probably continue with the two he currently has with Kauffman-Renn and Furst .. who may not have put up much in numbers but will be experienced but neither are as good as what he's had, yet.

Then he got severely lucky with Edey .. I highly doubt the number 1 in nation run continues when Zach is gone but ... ya never know.

Collins, I need to see without Boo in the backcourt. Pikell will get a class with actual talent .. we'll see if he can manage the egos.

Holtmann with more talent isn't working. He needs to continue recruiting high floor low ceiling teams (like Painter/Gard/McCaffery) and hope to get an Edey, or Murray, or Davis occasionally to put him over the top.

Wisconsin next year with Blackwell and Storr ...should be tough.
