Breaking Away

This^^^. I didn't grow up in Bloomington but where I grew up wasn't too far from there. I knew IU students, local residents, and people who worked in Bloomington all my life and until the movie came out I had never heard the term "cutters" ( or "stonies") to describe the locals. It was used as a term for Bedford High Schools athletic teams by local media since their mascot was the Stonecutters. That was the only place I had ever seen or heard the term.

During my years at IU ( I was a freshman when Breaking Away was filmed, a soph. when it was released), even after the movie, it wasn't used. To me and everyone else I knew they were "townies" and even then, if there was conflict between IU students and local kids I didn't witness it. I loved the movie, but always understood the underlying plot of conflict between students and local kids was for dramatic effect.

by then the term "stonie" had taken on a different meaning than when first coined, and i have no doubt that was the main reason for going with "cutters".

in 4 years on campus i don't ever remember an issue between the town folk and the college kids.
i do remember issues between the college kids and other college kids, vividly.

had hoped he mellowed with age but I heard lots of stories of him being a complete d***wad around Btown and Indy when he was younger.
I think maybe to be honest, the problem was her (CB), not him, in our slight encounter. He just said "thanks", which set it off on the BS level, and then CB started to argue with my wife about whether is was him or his Dad, I guess for all the grief I give her, at least she had the balls to get into it with a movie star

Stonies. (Quarry workers). I don't know how the towns folks took it. I dont think it was meant to be derogatory. I think in those days the students and local residents got along pretty well. The local people were friendly towards students.
At least back in the early 70's, a "Stoney" wasn't a quarry worker, per se, but just one of the people who lived the small town life in Stone Belt Country. It was a mildly derogatory term of identification the higher society college students gave to what we might call the "local yokels" today. The term was meant in jest, but I guess in present times of social wokeness, it might be considered a term shunned as bullying to the self esteem of one who is marginalized in further education. (tsk, tsk)

Or maybe the locals wouldn't give a shit now, just as they didn't back then. Then again, the slack-jawed Fox News devotees are required to use the term "woke" at least twice per day to retain membership in the club. I"m told Hannity and Carlson check the flock at least that often to make sure the "defenders of freedom" are bleating in unison.

Fox News......does anybody watch anything else any more?

You lost me at "slack-jawed Fox News". I knew exactly where this one was going.

I'll make you a deal. If you will make even a minimal attempt to stay on topic and not steer threads into unnecessary political discourse, I'll do the same. Your penchant for pontificating is annoying as hell. Just stay focused on the thread topic, where you often have interesting things to contribute, and leave it at that. As I have responded to you before, sometimes less is more. This thread didn't need a "hot take" on wokeness, just as another current thread on Butler's head coaching situation didn't need your commentary on Mike Davis' teeth/skin contrast and affirmative action.

If you had a character limit on your posts, most of the things you have to contribute here maybe wouldn't veer off into stream-of-conscience nonsense. If you can't control your habit of forcing social commentary into your posts, the water cooler can provide you with unlimited opportunity to bloviate.

I bet all the girls are drawn your way because you're such a sensitive man. You're one of those people with a "Just Be Kind" sign in your front yard. Right next to it is another sign, "Hatred Not Spoken Here". Those kind of people are usually just hateful people in disguise.

The world may never know, we have a neighbor that still has a huge Trump poster in their living room bay window. We try to steer clear, but they've never bothered us at all. I don't know what it might do to my property value though. We live in a nice area, it's like can't you take that down already or let me bring you a bed sheet at least?

One of my neighbors flies a large "Black Lives Matter" flag on his pole. I saw a" Trump Won" flag at another place the other day. There are a lot of Trump flags flying out in the southern Indiana countryside. I know a lady who still has a framed copy of the front page of the Indianapolis Star with the headline "OBAMA WINS!". It's above her living room sofa. It's a polarized country, that's for sure.

Movie may have coined the term "cutters". A term for the town folks. When I was there in early 70's " stonies" was used. Movie makers may have thought it was too derogatory.
Yes, in the 70’s a “stoner” was someone who was always getting high. They changed the name for that very reason. The “Cutters” bike team, taken from the movie, won their first Little 5 in 1986, when I was in school here.

Definitely, and we live in a nice area, but still see f'Biden bumper stickers and all that on the big trucks lacking mufflers or having glass packs. I don't even want to imagine who came up with that idea or who would buy it. We just try to stay out of the fray

What’s interesting is the entire main cast is still alive. Paul Dooley, the father, is 94 and Barbara Barrie, the mother, is 90. The director, Peter Yates, died and his picture used to be on the wall in Nick’s (might still be) hoisting a beer. The picture was taken during a scene filmed in Nick’s that was cut from the movie. I worked at Nick’s while in school and Dick Barnes, the previous owner, told me that story.

I had no idea what a glass pack is so had to look that one up. I'm just not a gearhead. I put air in the tires every once in awhile and that's it, just get me from point A to point B.

I'm not a sign displayer. I think it's better to keep 'em all guessing. The only exception is Welcome Race Fans during the month of May...the human race.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to know more about glass packs, other than they exist and rednecks are fond of them. It's not even a thing I think came to thought in 50 years, but something drew it out from childhood memory.

This whole topic is like six degrees of John Cougar, I know little about modern cars, but I looked them up too just to make sure I still was using proper nomenclature, and guess what they call them ... Cherry Bomb, that's what they call them now, no shit, all coming full circle. Mind blown, time to focus all my mental efforts on Duke losing.

I've seen them driving around in the hills and hollers of Brown Co. now that I read a description. I just never gave it a second thought. I get a kick out of the guys displaying their well-endowed dual mufflers of enormous proportion, usually on a Dodge Ram "Big Horn" edition. It screams of big phallus, especially when they have the dangling balls suspended from underneath. Now there's a macho man who really knows how to wet the ladies.

Yeah, it's kind of bad. A few years ago I took my trick car out for a battery wind-up. I didn't want any trouble at all, cause I was of tailwind hangover, then gassing it up and an off duty sheriff was up my ass about what kind of hot rod it was,. We raced, it was easy, and the cop was actually cool. I was thinking I just want to go home, and was like what do we do if we get caught, he said fake pull you over

Like a lot of things, you are wrong about me as well. My kids and friends would get a kick out of your assessment of me, though. In my earlier post I was trying to make the point that political philosophies are as diverse as the individuals who carry them and need not be interjected into unrelated conversations. What I posted in reply regarding "slack jawed Fox viewers" was simply to remind you that people don't appreciate being generalized, stereotyped, or denigrated because they have differing views. In a forum such as this, there is no need to inject social or political commentary into a thread where it is not relevant or necessary.

Wow, I started a thread about an all time great movie that IU was the center theme. It turned in to politics somehow?

I apologize for contributing to that. It was the second thread today that Abraxis' literary diarrhea derailed into social commentary and I called him out. No more politics from me. It would be nice if he were less in love with his own words and could stick to commenting on the thread topic instead of regaling us with rambling nonsense about race and social awareness.

Maybe the mods can put him on a character count so he has to stop while he's still on topic. If not, maybe we could institute a "germane rule" like parliamentary procedure and gavel him down when he wanders from the matter at hand.

Maybe I can do my part to return this to the tracks.

I was a freshman at IU when the movie was made. A couple of buddies and I went to the old stadium the day they filmed the race scenes but it was cold and things were moving slowly, so we bailed. Might have cost myself the chance to be on the big screen. I was on my way back to Teeter from my buddy's dorm room in Foster one night and happened on the filming of the scene outside the library. I had never seen a movie being made so I stopped with a small crowd to watch. It was pretty fascinating and very cool to watch that scene in the movie. I haven't watched it in a long time but I own a copy. Maybe I'll watch it Monday night instead of the National Cheaters Championship.

Cherry Bombs for the Ferrari Tik Tok Influencer crowd (male I suspect) are valve actuated exhaust cut outs-
