Big Ten Spotlight: Concern level for programs lagging behind on 2026 class

While high school recruiting is very important, this is a portal world now. I’d like to know the % of high school recruits who signed with a university are still with said university after 2 years. This is all about free agency now and so many of the high school kids signed up for a place for a year, expect immediate playing time, don’t see it and bolt.
The shelf life in a QB staying at their school past 3 seasons has to be pretty low.

Actually, the most successful teams are getting quality high school kids and keeping them in their program where they develop into the players they want them to be.

Per 24/7:
"Through four years of heavy transfer portal activity, national titles are not being won primarily through the portal. Michigan did have several in 2023, but most of the team was developed out of high school. Georgia did not take a single scholarship transfer in 2022 and had little reliance on it in 2021. The best teams recruit high school very well and then look to fill holes or upgrade in spots via the portal. Teams loading up on transfers are frequently coaches looking for a jumpstart to a new tenure, or, on the other end, looking for a fix to save their jobs."

And for OSU, their portal xfers were four in 2022, nine in 2023, and seven in 2024. They have six so far for 2025.

Since this is a message board, I'm not saying the portal isn't being used nor am I saying key players can't come from the portal. But the top teams are still very focused on recruiting and developing HS players.

Longevity at the starting school would be an interesting stat. And break it down by position. How often a QB stays, RB stays, OL, etc.
Recruitment is no longer about the school you dreamed about playing for, it is about who will pay me the most.
No idea where we will be with NIL in 5 years. Rules added? Nothing, just a free for all?

Here's a link to an article that sort of speaks to that (from Football Scoop back in February) :

Yeah, strongly disagree with the authors take.

We're gonna be just fine. We don't need to go in and pressure a bunch of kids to commit and then they still end up taking a bunch of visits to other schools and end up decommitting in the end. It seems like we're swimming in deeper waters in terms of type of kids, so it's best we get the correct kid and not the highest rated.

In Cig we trust.
