Belein to NBA

JOHN BELIEN TO THE CAVS!
I thought he got the NBA out of his system last year. I wonder why the Cavs are a better situation than Detroit?

Change is good if you are struggling. UM wasn't struggling. UM fans can't be happy about this.

I assume he is into the Cavs due to not being cap strapped like the Pistons. He's 66 so he has one good re-build in him.

Belein wants to make the NBA CA$H before retiring, or before a heart attack. See ya' Meatchicken.

He'll be getting fired in Cleveland in about 2 years time.... If Archie doesn't turn it around by then there you go. Although he will be almost 70 by then so maybe not.

Or he is simply tired of the 17 and 18 year olds he has to recruit.

Well Detroit did hire the reigning NBA COY. Beilein has been a good coach but it is not like he gets to pick his NBA team. Apparently the Pistons never offered and he probably got impatient or saw the writing on the wall. Then he pulled his name to make it look like UM was the place for him.

What's their recruiting class look like coming in? Wonder if any kids might reopen their commitment or look around?

Per 247 they only have two 3-stars signed. And seems like half the team is jumping into the draft. Maybe he's picking the right time to jump ship. Fine with me, he's been a pain in IU's arse for a while.

Correction- class includes Jalen Wilson who is now listed as a 4 star, and I wouldn't be surprised if he re-opens his recruiting ASAP.

I have a feeling they pursue Matta. Would be an interesting and ironic get for them.

They were really interested in Pitino at one time. I am sure that interest has changed but wouldn't surprise me to see him lobby for a second chance.

When is Purdue going to start firing coaches that can't make it to the big game? Purdue has maybe 3 overall ncaa titles overall. Not a sports school.

Purdue has 3 recognized NCAA championships*--1961 men's golf; 1999 women's bball; 2010 women's golf.

IU has 24 recognized NCAA championships--all men's--8 soccer; 6 swimming; 5 bball; 3 cross country; 1 track & field; 1 wrestling. I would like to know how many runner's up IU has---probably another 24 or so...........

Purdue has 30 individual national champions; IU has 141.

Purdue has 73 BT team championships**, IU has 177

Purdue has 13 BT tourney championships, IU has 19.

*Purdue claims 5 NCs---including 1932 Helm's basketball & 2018 cheer leading. If we want to play that game, IU has 6 cheer leading/dance championships & 3 collegiate water polo association championships we can drag out.

**Purdue claims 83 BT championships......however, the 177/73 #s cited are from the BT record book. Purdue tends to lie on these things....I see they claim 4 squash championships from the '30s & '40s, lol.

And guess what? None of that makes me feel better about the current state of our bball program, nor their dominance over us for the last 5-6 years.

Well....it makes me feel a little better, as does our baseball program, which is a lot of fun to follow.

I tried to find NCAA runner-ups---looks like IU has had 17......7 soccer, 5 swimming, 2 CC, 2 wrestling, 1 basketball. Again, all men's teams. As far as I can tell, IU has never had a female team championship or runner-up(?).

A couple of interesting notes, at least to me: IU won 3 of the first 5 NCAA CC championships, including the first one. Also, IU's '32 wrestling title was won in the IU Fieldhouse.

I heard that Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan were seen together in Ann Arbor eating at a local Taco Bell over the weekend.

I heard there was a third person at that table wearing a lousy Groucho Marx disguise that looked kind a like Archie Miller.

I'm really surprised. Seemed like a college guy for life.

I don't think it's that surprising, the money is always going to be a lure, and I've shared on here many, many times, and seems like some folks keep ignoring it, but most coaches prefer the NBA life to college coaching, because they can focus 100% on bball and not be concerned with recruiting, alumni, NCAA regs, etc... Probably more appealing to him at this stage, along with the money. I think his "style" of being flexible and more of a "players coach" might translate well to the NBA. I think he'll do fine, it's just a matter of whether the Cavs can equip him with enough talent I would guess.

At first, I thought this would be a sweet gig for someone. Then I remembered they may be losing a few of their players to the NBA and possibly some recruits very late in the recruiting season. There is very little out there to pick up to build a competitive team. They are screwed if they can't keep their recruits or get most of the early entry players back

Would they go to a interim coach to preserve the team they have?

As far as coaching the game on the court, college basketball is much, much more desirable. I can't imagine why anyone would want to be involved in coaching in the NBA absent the huge perks involved.

The problem with coaching college is everything else. Recruiting in college has turned into a nightmare in all respects. Competing against the UK & NC $ machines for prospects tied to shoe companies. The 'student-athletes' are students in name only. Phony classes & majors are the norm. You're a father (and mother) figure that is responsible for everything your willful, horny 19 year olds do on the side. And now you've got the federal government and the FBI snooping around all the time, not just the incompetent & corrupt NCAA. Way too much potential downside.
