I can’t believe all of these terrible character coaches are headed to the sweet 16. The IU administration must be appalled.
Blame Sampson if winning is all that matters to you.
Maybe if he hadn't #%c$*@ us once, the admin would have been willing to risk getting bent over again.
But he did, and they aren't about to. They actually did a good job with the search, this time.

I agree, the SEC likes to win! They hire good coaches still sell out arena's and football stadiums and they win. Hurley is a complete jack ass, UCONN wants to win so they go with it.I don’t think it’s a coincidence that all but one of those coaches are in the SEC.

I remember quite a bit of grumbling when IU hired Sampson, even more when they hired Woodson. The DeVries hire, to this point, seems better managed. The problem wasn't in hiring Sampson. The problem was Rick Greenspan hiring him and not taking the steps necessary to make sure he operated within the rules. No, an AD can't be with any coach 24 hours a day. But I'm convinced more could've been done to have prevented what happened there.
Also, none of us knows how well DeVries is going to work out. I hope that he does. I'd think that we all would. But saying "they actually did a good job with the search, this time" sounds a lot like counting chickens before they hatch.
Many people thought the same thing with previous hiring decisions, too.
None of them coach at a bluebloodWhat’s the other common denominator most share besides winning?
Greenspan didn’t make that hiring decision, the prez did. I have it from a pretty good source that Greenspan was all over Sampson trying to prevent him from doing what he did. The best thing to do would have been not to hire a guy the NCAA had targetedThe problem wasn't in hiring Sampson. The Sampson debacle was on Herbert as much as anyone.Greenspan didn’t make that hiring decision, the prez did. Houston seems to be doing okay with the NCAA double-targeted guy they hired. The best thing to do would have been not to hire a guy the NCAA had targeted
Lesson to be learned - Never let a DEI hired administrator hire a DEI basketball coach. Neither is as smart as they need to be, nor as smart as they think they are.The Sampson debacle was on Herbert as much as anyone.
Well, it would be nice if hiring decisions could be made by using the time machine and going forward five years, wouldn't it? But I hear the hourly rental is exorbitant so even with Indiana's resources they are using traditional methods....

The arguments being made today were the same arguments being made in the past. So I don't want to hear anything about "Let's just hop in the DeLorean and undo all those bad hires."Well, it would be nice if hiring decisions could be made by using the time machine and going forward five years, wouldn't it? If you prefer, mentally prepend my comments with 'IMO' .

Oh, please. That had absolutely nothing to do with that debacle.Lesson to be learned - Never let a DEI hired administrator hire a DEI basketball coach. Neither is as smart as they need to be, nor as smart as they think they are.
There was no search. Dolson fell in love with this guy in the Bahamas and as soon as Mike "retired " it was a done deal. The double-secret one.
And I'm tired of every three posts someone (RE)saying "you don't KNOW this hire will be successful!" or they just say the awesome "We hired Crean, Archie, Woodson ... !"The arguments being made today were the same arguments being made in the past. So I don't want to hear anything about "Let's just hop in the DeLorean and undo all those bad hires."

Well said. The arguments being made today were the same arguments being made in the past. So I don't want to hear anything about "Let's just hop in the DeLorean and undo all those bad hires."
I'll be honest: my expectations for DeVries aren't all that high. Do I hope he exceeds them? Absolutely. He's our coach, he has my support.
But the expectations themselves have been gone ever since I came to the conclusion that IU's athletics department doesn't have the chutzpah to be competitive in today's game.
It's not a matter of money. The money has been there. The fan support has been there. What's been lacking is the absolute insistence that we have a winning program, and the toleration of nothing less. Matt Doherty was 26-7 in his first season at UNC. Lost in the 2nd round. That was followed by a terrible season and a mediocre season. And then they pulled the plug.
Do you think IU would've pulled the plug on him that quickly? Or Gillespie at Kentucky?
And, yes, I think a big part of the reason we haven't gotten back into the mix is our unwillingness to hire coaches like Pearl or Beard.
Maybe. But at least he credits his right hand man for doing a ton of statistical work to give him cover. Which he says points to this being the right hire. There was no search. Dolson fell in love with this guy in the Bahamas and as soon as Mike "retired " it was a done deal.
I agree.Maybe. But at least he credits his right hand man for doing a ton of statistical work to give him cover. Which he says points to this being the right hire.
And Dolson called out the Archie hire saying one newer criteria was did they turn a program around or 'build' a program, or did they inherit one running smoothly already, ala Archie Miller.
So, it's not the same search method, no matter how much everyone screams that it is. Unless Dolson is a liar, and I don't believe that.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that all but one of those coaches are in the SEC.
So you think Goodman was blowing smoke when he says they talked with McCollum twice and contacted TJO and Greg McDermott? There was no search. Dolson fell in love with this guy in the Bahamas and as soon as Mike "retired " it was a done deal.
