Balanced Roster for ‘25

I did find the last question Cig answered to be interesting. It was around losing some DB's to the portal and whether we would go after more in the spring. Cig was quite blunt in that although positions are earned on the field (practice/games), we haven't lost anyone who he projected would be a starter for us next fall. That felt intentional and likely a bit towards Jamier Johnson....

Seems really important that some of the guys in the system get on the field. Pretty deflating knowing you are getting portaled over every year.

I would think we're going to have to hit the portal strong again next year.

That '24 class was small (17), and the 3 highest ranked kids are either injured (Cherry) or have transferred (Philostin & Kosir)

The '25 class was bigger (22) but not a heck of a lot batter. Rated at #47. I'd be surprised if anyone other than Baldwin is in the two deep this year. Guys like Cuono, Bell, Abram, and Burris might be rotation players as redshirt freshmen.

Couple of thoughts:

-No DE or LB transfers - is that a Spring priority?
-Experienced players at every position
-Sure would like to see a couple of the younger guys crack the lineup and flourish

IU Football Roster 2025
Yeah this is signing day isn't it. I completely forgot. I used to look forward to it. Now it doesn't seem so important anymore.

And Philostin

The staff doesn't care about rankings so we really can't say what freshman could break into the 2 deep.

Hardy and Landino were two of our lowest ranked recruits last cycle, and they both saw a good amount of snaps last year.

I think there are some good talents in that class if you just go by the teams we beat out for many of them. The only concern is that IU needs to continually increase the number of that type player to get away from depending so heavily on the portal. There will always be holes to be filled by the portal, but fewer each year hopefully.

Hopefully this next class (coming in for the 2026 season) will reflect our success on the field last Fall (2024) and the obvious tangible talent of our individual coaches...

If we're able to build a consistent base of high level incoming high school talent as our competitive foundation and put ourselves in a position where we only "need" 14 or so Portal guys each year I think we'll really be cooking with gas and on our way to gaining consistent actual National Power status... Should be fun to watch...

Cig has said this very thing.

We're never gonna get totally away from the portal, but if we're recruiting the right kids that develop, our use shouldn't have to be so heavy handed.

I think the entire Portal deal will change...it has to. Saw a graphic wherein the top college QB NIL is richer that 6 NFL QB's, to include Michael Penix.
Madness.
It will change and coaches will have to change as it does. That is why I like Cignetti as he is experienced and willing to change as the rules change.
