You mentioned elsewhere that you thought CAM has 'lost this team'.
My immediate thought was that 'he never had it'.
I say that because from the first time I saw this team with CAM (scrimmage at HH, 2017-18), I was concerned about their overall demeanor. It was obvious that 1/2 of the team had no interest in being there. Now one can say, 'what the hell, it's only a scrimmage', but it was very alarming because I would have expected a different attitude for a new coach, new era. For this reason, I was not surprised we lost to a few nobodies in Fall 2017, although I was shocked by the margins.
Fast forward to 2018-19.....The hope was 'addition by subtraction' with the graduation of Newkirk & Johnson...plus an infusion of talent & enthusiasm with Hunter & talent with Romeo, plus Davis being back. Lots of reasons for optimism. The big question to me was what Miller was going to be able to get out of Green & Smith. It was obvious that both needed an attitude adjustment. Would it happen?
Unfortunately not. Stat-wise, no improvement and some decline. Green still careless & selfish with the ball. Brainless passing and shooting. Smith still plays hard only when he feels like it, which seems to be about every third game. Miller praises them off & on, especially Smith, but whatever motivations he has tried do not work. The play of those two guys, and injuries, leads to the point where Miller says after the Iowa game: "I wasn't terribly disappointed with our team tonight".
To me, that was a wtf comment. To be fair, he explained in some detail why Iowa won & IU lost.....in isolation, his comments made sense. But they won't fly when you're fresh off a seven game losing streak, and you are talking about errors and omissions, but you never discuss the reasons for those continuing issues.....inattention to detail and lack of sustained effort.
Which finally leads me to what I see as the bottom line question.......how, exactly, is CAM going to deal with Smith & Green going forward? It's been 2 & 3 years, respectively. The positive approach hasn't worked. Do you cut bait after the year? Or do you continue to chase their "potential" for one more year?
I admit that the call is harder with Smith, because he has been effective more frequently than Green. But how long do you continue to give major minutes to a player who shows up 1/3 of the time?
Very difficult choice for CAM. I personally hope both are gone by next fall, but CAM is paid $3.5M to make the right call.
