The Portal is going crazy and Auburn is getting burned. Don't think the Auburn faithful will be as kind about these two leaving as they were supportive of Shivers.

Any shot at Nix? One year fix at QB?

No thanks on Martinez. Was never impressed with anything he did.

That Penix kid sounds good, I wouldn't mind us landing him, Idk if he can overcome our train wreck at O-line with his injury history though.

Don’t know much about any of these guys, outside Penix obviously. Which are markedly better than Tuttle?

Really, I'm glad we're moving on from Penix. Just too injury prone. Probably he contributed to Sheridan's downfall by hurrying him to play before he was completely ready[healthly]
Lol no that was a joke, because Penix obviously transferred out of Indiana. I agree though he was too injury prone for us to but all of our eggs in the Mike Penix basket for a third straight year, I hope he stays healthy and finishes his career strong, but it was time to move on.

Definitely would like to know more about the decision making process behind making Penix the starter. Were there doubts about Tuttle, or just hope that game reps would get Penix back up to speed faster? Who was pushing to start Penix? Allen or Sheridan? Did Allen leave the decision completely up to Sheridan, was a it mutual decision, or did Allen override Sheridan? Was there any disagreement between Allen/Sheridan about the decision? Did Allen have reservations, but Sheridan stuck his neck out for Penix, gambled and lost?

I could definitely see Penix and Sheridan having a strong relationship, and perhaps that blinding him.

IMO, with all we saw this year from Penix and Tuttle, Penix should've been the starter until he got hurt. Jack not only struggled with accuracy(overthrew Malachi Holt Bennett on what could've been an easy touchdown and should've at the very least been a 30 yard completion vs Rutgers). He also struggled to read defenses, the first pick against rutgers, the pick against PSU, and the pick 6 against MSU that arguably cost us the game. Tuttle did have some good moments, that drive against OSU before he got injured was very nice, but I feel like both QB's were pretty inconsistent, and Penix had the higher ceiling when he was on. He was never 2020 Penix this year, but I still believe he was our best option until he got injured.

Interesting how many names are still there with spring ball underway. They are not that good? Teams need spring ball to see if they need a QB?

All of our QBs are doodie. We need new blood in here.
I assume doodle is negative.
With that assumption I am not sure it is correct. I do agree that neither Tuttle nor the Conner kid from Mizzouri seem elite.
I would love to see one of our young QBs that also can run win the starter job.

Reports out of practice say that Tuttle and Conner are well ahead of the other QBs so thinking they aren't elite may not be true. Tuttle was in the elite QB top 11 camp so those coaches saw him as elite. I agree we haven't seen that from him here at IU but I am hoping he shows it this year or that Connor shows his freshman player of the year in the SEC for the Hoosiers. If Williams or McCulley can beat out either one then we should have an elite QB.

Peyton Ramsey was a 2-star. I’d take another Peyton Ramsey right now. The kid at Purdue was a former walk-on and was one of the best QBs in the conference.
The QBs we have are very serviceable. We need a damn offensive line that don’t play like a bunch of cream puffs. Sheridan’s offense was obscene on every level. Even going back to the Gator Bowl and we were ripping off big chunks running the ball and he then figured it’s a good idea to abandon the run and rely on his QB with a shoulder separation?

Peyton may have had a ** arm talent, but he had an elite football IQ.
He managed to maximize his talent in a way many of us may never see again.
(‘Cuz we’re just that old).
One of the problems last year was clearly QB decision making.
Gremel played because he made the best decisions.
If IU can get QB decision making, and anticipation anywhere close to Ramsey’s level this fall, most of us would be pleased.

Ramsey was a high floor low ceiling player, he made far better decisions in 2018-2019 than any of our four QBs last year, but Penix in 2019-2020 was easily the best QB we've seen in the Allen era. I have low expectations for Tuttle, he was three years removed from high school last year and still made rookie mistakes, a terrible O-line and playcalling obviously didn't help matters.

I'm still not sure about McCulley, we know he's a great athlete, we know he has as good an arm as anyone in the room(except maybe Bazelak, I still don't know a ton about him), the entirety of his issues last year came from his decision making. That's still a TBD, obviously not a great first sample, but Idk if you could design a worse situation for a college QB to get his first in game reps if you tried. A true freshman non-early enrollee(it was woefully obvious he didn't know the full playbook, which is completely normal for someone who wasn't even with the team until 3 months before the season started), with the worst O-line/OC combo in power five football, and injuries at wide receiver & running back. I'm pretty much throwing out that first year of tape, but even then, it's a lot easier to tear it up in Indiana high school football than in the B1G. We'll see if he ever gets to the point where he is a solid decision maker, but if he does he has the skillset(NOT TALENT) to be a Lamar Jackson type at QB, and given Hiller is still in charge of the O-line, having a dynamic QB that can make decisions under duress would be a huge help to this offense.

I thought Gremel looked pretty solid when he played. I mean, for a walk-on with no previous D1 experience, he had his moments. He also struggled at times, but that will happen when you're running for your life with no open WRs.

I would think, with some practice with the 1s or 2s, he could really improve. I hope he's not forgotten because he's a walk-on. He deserves a scholarship after last year.

Heard rumors before Spring pracice that McCulley was moving to WR. Obviously, that wasn't true, but with that may QBs on the roster, it could be that he considers a position change. He's got the athleticism.

I always think that when a walk-on plays a significant amount of minutes that he should be considered for a scholarship. Sometimes that happens, but not always.

He's got the athleticism to be a wide receiver, but I'm not writing him off as a QB just yet, his high school tape shows that he has a phenomenal arm, under a solid QB coach, he could develop into something special. Plus in this era, forcing guys to change positions just won't work out, I'm not talking safety to husky, or cornerback to safety, players may even agree with those marginal changes, but QB to WR is a huge change. McCulley was recruited as a QB and with the transfer portal, he would probably just leave and go play QB at a GO5 school if IU moved him to wide receiver.

I agree it's awesome to see walk-ons have success and be rewarded for the hard work they put in, if Spegal gets considerable reps this year even on special teams I think he's earned a scholarship. But IMO, none of our walk ons who got considerable PT last season really earned their minutes in a conventional sense. Gremel beat out a true freshman who didn't even know the whole playbook, and Ervin-Poindexter/Childers also beat out a true freshman, the rest of the guys ahead of them were injured at the end of the year. It's not like Mitchell Paige or AOC who actually earned starting reps over all the guys with a scholarship.

I'm not saying he should or is going to change. I just said I'd been told the rumor by someone who is usually plugged in and that McCulley is athletic.

Tim Wilbur played QB at Ben Davis and was all Big Ten as a Safety.

Position changes can happen and happen scuccessfuly. Just depends on the player.

And Jason Spriggs was a successful tight end at Concord, but made the move to lineman at IU and with the NFL.

Not a fair comparison, Wilbur played in the 1980s, transferring was practically unheard of then, it was a completely different game then. In this era of CFB, successful position changes like that are few and far between, they do happen, but it's much more difficult for them to happen now. All it takes for kids to transfer now is a coach to look at them the wrong way, forcing a kid to switch positions(and not similar positions at that) a year into their career will almost certainly warrant a kid to enter the portal.

WTH does transferring have to do with this discussion?

WTH DO YOU THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THIS DISCUSSION, it was a lot easier for coaches to get kids to change positions WHEN THERE WAS NO TRANSFER PORTAL. Jordyn Williams literally transferred because they wanted him to change his position and he had no interest in playing DB. In the 1980s, you just had to listen to your coach if he told you they he thought switching you from QB to WR or WR to DB was best. Today players have so much more leverage, you can tell the staff your playing fill in the blank position whether it's at your current school or not. If the staff knows he's a flight risk to transfer when they propose a position change, they know they're going to need to be absolutely sure about him not working out at QB because there's probably a 50/50 chance in today's CFB that McCulley just says **** playing WR and enters the portal if they propose it.

It is a new situation due to transfer rules. Players have an option now that many thought was too big a cost to do in the past. Getting plyers that have grown up playing a position and dreaming about succeeding at that position. Talk of McCulley changing positions isn't realistic based on last year. People ignore the total SNAFU that was IU's offense last season due to poor coaching of the OC/QB coach. How far back it set the QBs we will see but I hope McCulley can overcome it by this season.

Actually, I think McCulley has a much better shot at the pros as a WR..., especially with our new WR coach tutoring him..., but he'll have to make that decision completely on his own, along with the blessing of his parents, because any other approach will end up with him most likely heading elsewhere in this era of the Portal...

It'd be a really smart move on his part (moving to WR)... He'd get on the field early and often and that would payoff big time for him long term..., but I don't expect it to happen... It's tough to give up a college QB gig, even if it's the smart move... I'd imagine that the people advising him wouldn't be terribly excited initially about such a move either...

A couple of reasons it's a good idea when he's looking towards his future as an athlete: There's a lot more pro jobs available as a WR then there are as a QB and he's got the perfect vehicle to get him to the pros with our new WR's coach..., And he wouldn't be totally dependent on 10 other guys (as he is as a QB) to be able to look good to the pro scouts...

Here's hoping he makes the best decision for himself long term...

I have no idea why some of our fans act like Bazelak isn't good enough to play here. He did damn well playing in the SEC. If your minimum expectation is "elite" well i don't know what to tell you. If he can throw for 400 against LSU as a freshman, he can sure as hell play at iu. He's likely your starter for the next couple of years.

Yeah, I'm wondering that myself. Unless Tuttle really improves a lot in his decision making, I would think Bazelak would be the starter.

But, who knows. No one here can witness practices, and those that can ain't talkin'.

I do think overall he has a better shot at making the NFL if he moves to WR. But I still don't think we've seen nearly enough of him at QB to bail, he is certainly athletic enough to move to WR but the kid was a higher rated recruit out of HS than Lamar, and Lamar was a better athlete, recruiting sites certainly aren't perfect but clearly they believe he's a talented thrower of the football.

I would also make the case he is more dependent on other guys at WR than at QB. If you're talented enough and make good decisions at QB you get a chance to flash your brilliance on somewhere between 50 and 80% of all plays no matter what. WR's are heavily reliant not only on their QB to give them catchable balls(e.g. the Bears Darnell Mooney constantly being overthrown by Nick Foles/Mitch Trubisky in 2020), but on scheme. If your a WR, you have a far better shot at making the NFL at Ole Miss than at Illinois, because your going to get so many more opportunities to shine, if you go to a school like Illinois or Wisconsin(extremely run heavy systems) you don't get nearly as many looks. Not that it's impossible to make the NFL from those schools, Minnesota has put two WRs in the NFL in the last two years and they're as run heavy as anyone, but it's certainly easier at a school where the QB drops back 40-50 times per game.

I like 400 yd games.
Maybe you r correct and asking for elite at IU is asking too much.
But why can’t we have a QB in the Heisman race?
